U.S. officials sought to determine Sunday whether extremist groups had infiltrated police brutality protests across the country and deliberately tipped largely peaceful demonstrations toward violence — and if foreign adversaries were behind a burgeoning disinformation campaign on social media.As demonstrations spread from Minneapolis to the White House, New York City and overseas, federal law enforcement officials insisted far-left groups were stoking violence. Two children were killed and nine people were injured Monday evening after a man driving a stolen police cruiser crashed at high speed into a SUV and a minivan in Dayton, Ohio, police said.The suspect, Raymond Andrew Walters Jr., was driving 97 mph when he ran a red light and plowed into the two vehicles, Dayton Police Chief Richard Biehl said at a press conference Tuesday.Walters had been on active parole, and police suspect methamphetamine may have played a part in the incident, Biehl said.The incident unfolded when Walters' father was trying to take his son to a hospital for mental health issues, but when the suspect realized where they were going, he began assaulting his father, Biehl said.Suspect stole a police cruiser, police saidThe suspect left his father bleeding from head and face wounds, and took off in his father's Chevy truck, Biehl said.Walters crashed the truck into a tree in nearby Riverside, Dayton police said.When a Riverside officer responding to a 911 call about the accident got out of his police cruiser to check on the driver, the suspect got in and took control of the cruiser from the passenger side, Biehl said.The Riverside officer tased Walters twice, Biehl said, but that didn't stop the suspect from taking off in the cruiser.Running the police lights and sirens, Walters reached a maximum speed of 101 mph, Biehl said. He was not being pursued by police at the time of the accident, the police chief said.The Honda minivan was carrying seven children and one adult, all family members, Biehl said. However, she never forgot the loneliness she experienced during that time.“I thought, ‘how could we personalize a way to connect with people on a one-to-one basis and make a more personalized connection?’ That's what was missing for me,” she said.That led Tikoyan to develop the Riley app.It allows people to connect to one another based on similar medical conditions, like cancer, autoimmune diseases and, now, even the coronavirus – where self-quarantines could lead to people feeling isolated.”Knowing that, other people out there are experiencing the same thing or going through the same experience, is really making them feel so much more empowered,” Tikoyan said.Among those people is Kathryn White, who also has Lyme disease, along with complex PTSD. Her service dog, Constantine, is constantly at her side, but she’s also found kindred spirits in the Riley app.“You start with, ‘hello, how are you?’ and then it quickly evolves into ‘how you doing today? How are you feeling?’” White said.So far, she has messaged others with similar conditions, including a person who lives in Spain.“One of the main things I was looking for was a friendship, was that support network, and I definitely found that with various people,” White said.Users can put in as little or as much personal information as they want into the free app. The Riley team said security is a top priority: they monitor for inappropriate content and allow users to flag it as well.“By connecting with each other, we can hopefully change the stigma and go out there and really feel empowered,” Tikoyan said.Since launching in January, more than 700 people have joined the Riley app. The team behind it is now working with several hospital systems to expand the app’s reach. 2270
