San Diego Zoo Global has started fundraising efforts for Australia and locals have taken it upon themselves to donate either money or time to the cause."We strive to be active members and leaders of our local community, but we also feel a responsibility to support this cause due to the sheer magnitude of the devastation," Chris Cox, COO of OMG Hospitality Group, said. "Eric and Teresa's (Letstein, CEO & Founder of OMG Hospitality Group) oldest daughter is currently living and focusing on her college studies in Australia. This is a disaster on a global scale where so many people and animals have been affected by this disaster, and we just want to do our small part."It's estimated that more than 1 billion animals have died in the fires across the nation, including several species indigenous to the country. The fires have also claimed 28 lives and destroyed 2,000 homes.RELATED: Rain brings relief — and a few new concerns — for fire-ravaged AustraliaOfficials on the ground have reported the fires have completely erased habitats.“The recent news coverage of the fires across Australia is devastating, and at City Tacos, we are looking to help in any way we can," City Tacos’ owner Gerry Torres said. "Our motto is that we make everything 'with love,' and so City Tacos wants to spread that love. We are just hoping to raise as much money as we can and support Australia during this time, so we’re getting the word out for people to come dine at any location on Monday, Jan. 20.” 2518

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego renters with children spend almost as much on childcare as they do on rent, according to a new report. The report by HotPads found that, combined with rent, San Diegans dish out roughly ,195 a month on both expenses. Only four other cities, San Jose, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Boston had higher combined costs. According to the site, the average monthly cost of childcare in America’s Finest City is ,515 more than half the median cost to rent, which came in at ,680.JOIN THE CONVERSATION:?How do you save money on these two necessities?Surprisingly, the report discovered that the cost of childcare in San Diego was similar to the national average, which came in at ,385.The high price tag may also play a role in where renters with children choose to live. According to a report by Zillow, those renters are more likely to prioritize the number of bedrooms and square footage in a home or apartment when searching for a place to live. 991

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Pride is calling for video submissions that will be incorporated into their live-streamed event in July, in lieu of in-person gatherings. They are requesting people submit 15-30 second videos describing what Pride means to them. “We’ve learned as a movement and community that sharing personal stories is what pulls at hearts and minds and can help shape policy,” said Fernando Lopez, the Executive Director of SD Pride. But he also said he wants to make sure that even though the event will be virtual, it still creates a place for the LGBT community to express themselves. “What we’re doing is asking everyone to participate,” said Lopez. “One of the things that makes Pride special and unique is that we ask everyone from all walks of life to come together and celebrate diversity and to be together in community. We’re trying to do that but do it in a different way.” The videos will be incorporated into their live broadcast on July 18. As a year-round educational and advocacy organization, Lopez said SD Pride has already moved a lot of its events online. In doing so, he said they’ve actually been able to expand their reach. “When we’d have an educational forum, you’d get 40-80 people in a room,” he estimated. Now he says they are drawing thousands of people to their online forums.“We’re producing more programming than we have ever before and reaching more people than we ever have before,” said Lopez. To submit a video, go to this link on the SD Pride website. 1513

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police say the man shot in an officer-involved shooting downtown last weekend has died from his injuries.Leonardo Hurtado Ibarra, 25, died of his injuries at the hospital on Monday just before 10:30 p.m., SDPD said Tuesday. On Saturday, two officers in the area of 1200 6th Avenue saw Ibarra leaving a building and recognized him from a recent wanted flier regarding a robbery, according to SDPD. Police say the officers attempted to stop and talk with Ibarra but he began to walk away.RELATED: SDPD release surveillance video, body cam footage from officer-involved shooting in Downtown San DiegoPolice say Ibarra dropped the items he was carrying and "reached into his waistband." He was taken to a nearby hospital where he underwent surgery and was placed in the ICU with life-threatening injuries.A loaded revolver wrapped in a bandana was recovered at the scene, but police have not determined if Ibarra fired the weapon at officers. The two officers involved, identified as Jonathon Lucas and Tevar Zaki, were not injured. Both officers have been with SDPD for about four years, according to the department. They have been placed on administrative leave during the investigation.RELATED: Calls for San Diego Police reform following downtown shootingBodycam footage was released in Sunday showing the incident from the perspective of the two officers.
