SANTA ANA (KGTV and CNS) - Authorities say five people were killed Sunday afternoon when a small plane crashed near a Santa Ana shopping center. The crash happened around 12:29 p.m. in the parking lot of the Staples Supercenter on the 3800 block of South Bristol Street. No one on the ground was hurt. As the plane barreled through the parking lot, it struck at least one unoccupied car, Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi said. A nearby intersection was closed in all four directions near the crash. The parking lot is shared by Staples, a CVS drug store, a Michaels' decorations store, and a Wells Fargo Bank branch. The crash site is about one mile northwest of the northern end of the runway at John Wayne Orange County Airport. 781

SANTEE, Calif (KGTV) — The "sprayground" was inconveniently closed Tuesday as temperatures were expected to near 100 degrees in Santee Lakes. "I came the day before and it was 57 degrees," says Walter Frank of Santee. "But I don't mind that it's hot. It gets to 90 degrees, I'm great... I'll go run two miles."Not everyone agrees, and many people were out early trying to get their exercise in before it gets hot. A heat advisory is in effect until 5 p.m. Tuesday for the coast and valleys. On top of the heat, dry and gusty winds are expected in the inland and mountain areas of the county, elevating fire danger. It was 96 degrees in Santee Monday, with a high of 98 expected Tuesday and above average temperatures all week. In the morning, it was still cool enough to get a walk around the lake in, or participate in the other popular early morning activity: Fishing. Frank says he uses the early morning to meditate and pray as he walks, before heading indoors to beat the worst of the later-day heat. "That's why God invented air conditioning," he says. 1066

SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) - Business leaders on the U.S. side of the border are worried that President Trump's threat of tariffs against Mexico over illegal immigration could cause a sharp decline in sales. In the week after the president announced his plan to impose a 5 percent tariff on Mexican goods, the peso dropped nearly 4 percent in value. That means it's worth less compared to the U.S. dollar.Local shop owner Sunil Gakhreja, who is also a member of the San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, said 99 percent of his customers come from Mexico. He also said if the peso gets much lower, people will stop crossing the border to shop.RELATED: Trump imposes tariffs on Mexico over border squabble"Right now, it's around 18 or 19 (pesos per dollar). That's fine," Gakhreja said. "But when it gets to 20, people won't come. Trust me, it's a ghost town; Nno one comes in."Trump's plan would impose a 5 percent tax starting June 10. The tariff would increase by another 5 percent every month through October, topping out at 25 percent. Trump said it will stay in place until Mexico can stop the flow of people crossing into the U.S. illegally.Gakhreja said he and other business owners are still feeling the effects of a five-hour border closure in November. That cost an estimated .3 million to local shops.Currency exchange businesses say they're keeping an eye on the changes from minute to minute.RELATED: Trump says Mexico tariffs likely to go into effect"It's horrifying," said Bertha Fridman with JSD Money Exchange. "It's the money that goes in your pocket, and that's less."Fridman said her business deals mostly with people exchanging dollars for pesos, and she won't be affected. But she hears from people south of the border, and they're worried."It's the psychology of the people," she said.RELATED: Tariffs on Mexico imports could have outsized impact on San Diego"Once their buying power drops, they will not buy from us," said Gakhreja. "Even if it changes by 2 or 3 pesos, that's real money. They'll walk." 2047

Schooling at home is now reshaping the way we think about back-to-school shopping. You may not need the hand sanitizer and masks but what you will need are electronics galore."Find a place in your home where each child has their own personal learning space," said Lisa Estabrook. You may have the personal learning space ready to go but what about the supplies to help your child thrive?Novi Teacher Lisa Estabrook and shopping trends expert Sara Skirboll is breaking down five of the best buys that could prove to be a game-changer."If you don’t have a laptop where kids can Zoom and email you might consider picking up something that’s durable something that’s not super expensive."#1: Something like a Chromebook. lightweight, user friendly, and at 0 bucks, a fraction of a standard laptop’s price!#2 Virtual accessories"Built-in microphones aren’t that great and if your child is spending a lot of time speaking to their teachers and peers on Zoom, you might consider investing in an additional piece like a microphone," said Retail Me Not expert Sara Skirboll. In the meantime, if you have a tablet, grab your student a keyboard.Do you have an older model laptop? Don’t forget a web-cam.#3 A good pair of headphonesIt takes away that background noise so the student can really focus on what they’re supposed to be learning. Skirboll recommends an affordable brand called ear-fun."They’re waterproof, they have 30 hours of battery life, built-in microphone," said Skirboll."Then make sure your WiFi connection is high tech," said Skirboll. They know exactly where they need to be for a certain amount of hours to get their schoolwork done but your internet might not extend there. That’s definitely something you need to consider.#4 A WiFi extender which extends the coverage area of your internet. The one thing that parents probably aren't thinking about is a printer at home," said Estabrook. "However, some students might learn best if you print out the work and work at a table."#5 Add on your list of best buys is a printer, ink, and paper. So here’s the Rebound Rundown:A good laptop or Chromebook is vital to virtual instructionEarphones can help kids focus and block outside distractionsA printer can help more visual learners excel. If you do get a printer, make sure it has a scanning option, that way you can take your child’s work and scan right to the teacher.Otherwise, you can buy a scanning app on your smartphone and do it directly from the phone instead. This story was originally reported by Ameera David at WXYZ. 2541
