VIENNA, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) needs to enhance its role in promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy, non-proliferation and fostering nuclear security, a senior Chinese official said here Monday.Global revitalization of nuclear energy has brought more opportunities for the IAEA to play an even larger role in promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy and technology, said Chen Qiufa, head of the Chinese delegation to the IAEA's 54th General Conference opened in Vienna.Chen, also director general of the China Atomic Energy Authority, told the conference that the IAEA should continue to strengthen technical cooperation for sustainable development of nuclear energy, and give heed to opinions of developing countries.On the issue of nuclear safety, Chen said the IAEA should continue to push forward the development of global nuclear safety and security legislation and standard system, to strengthen transfer of knowledge and exchange of experience, popularize and promote nuclear culture so as to increase public confidence in nuclear energy development.With increasing work load of nuclear verification activities, the agency should build its own technical capability while fully cooperating with member states and using their resources to achieve nuclear safeguards targets, he added.Chen pointed out that the IAEA should play an active role in addressing sensitive and hot-spot nuclear issues.He said China always holds that the nuclear conundrum on the Korean Peninsula and in Iran should be resolved through dialogues and negotiations.China also supported the IAEA and its director general to continue to play their due role to push forward the diplomatic settlement of these issues.

BEIJING, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan has vowed to enhance trade cooperation with the U.S. state of Washington.He told visiting Washington Governor Christine Gregoire in Beijing Thursday that China was ready to boost friendly ties with Washington State, and deepen cooperation in trade and investment to increase mutual understanding and trust.Wang said a positive, cooperative and comprehensive China-U.S. relationship was in the fundamental interests of both peoples. Gregoire said Washington State wanted to strengthen substantial cooperation with China in areas such as aviation, information technology, agriculture and forestry. LANZHOU/BEICHUAN, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- After living through major tragedies, such as the Wenchuan Earthquake that claimed over 68,000 lives and the Zhouqu mudslides that left 1,400 dead, the new semester starting Wednesday may bring a much-needed sense of normality to the affected students.Senior high schoolers of the mudslides-hit Zhouqu County, northwest China's Gansu Province, began a new semester on a usual date, Sept. 1, which is the first day of school in many parts of China, but at a place 400 km south of Zhouqu, the provincial capital of Lanzhou.After the county was hit by massive mudslides on Aug. 8, two primary schools were damaged and high schools are now being used by these pupils. So high schoolers, altogether more than 3,000, were transferred to four schools in Lanzhou and Dingxi City."The new dormitory has everything -- bed sheets, tooth brushes, slippers, toilet paper, you name it", said Wang Wentian, whose house was destroyed. Fortunately, her family was not at home when the mudslides struck.Another student, Guo Xiangban, lost several loved ones in the mudslides. "I still feel sad when I am alone. But the past is the past and I have to move on with my life," said Guo.On the same day, students of the newly-built Beichuan High School, where over 1,000 students were killed after two school buildings collapsed during the Wenchuan earthquake on May 12, 2008, also started their new semester."I have never been in a school so beautiful. There is even a bathroom in our dorm," said Qiao Qi, a senior high student at Beichuan.The new school, covering an area of 15 hectares, can accommodate 5,200 students. Before the school was built, students, like nomads, had studied during the past two years in tents, then makeshift classrooms.Sitting in a wheelchair, Guo Dongmei looked at the bustling sports field where her schoolmates could not wait to try out the new sports equipment, such as the parallel bars.
