SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego doctor is leading a new national study that tests drugs designed to help coronavirus patients.If you tested positive for coronavirus this summer, there was nowhere for you to go unless you were sick enough to end up in a hospital bed. The ACTIV-2 Study hopes to keep that from happening."So this trial is specifically designed to find those agents to keep people from going to the hospital," Dr. Davey Smith said. He is the Chief of Infectious Diseases at UC San Diego and the Protocol Chair for the study."If your symptoms started within ten days and your test is positive in seven days, then you are eligible for the study," Dr. Smith said.UCSD had their first patient mid-September. There are two test sites, one at UCSD and another at Kaiser's Zion Medical Center. Dr. Smith hopes to expand to six test sites."We want to test eight drugs over the next year, maybe more. There are lots of pharmaceutical companies making better and better drugs," he said the goal is to keep people healthy."If I were to get sick and I would have something to prevent me from getting sicker that's number 1. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A San Diego fire captain convicted of domestic violence was sentenced Wednesday.Steven Michaels received three years probation, 52 weeks of counseling and 180 days of custody which will be served in a county parole and alternative custody program, according to City News Service.Michaels, a veteran fire captain with the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, pleaded guilty in 2017 to shoving his girlfriend against a wall and refusing to let her use a phone to call for help, CNS reported.RELATED: Veteran San Diego fire captain pleads guilty to domestic violence chargeMichaels filed a request to have the felony charge reduced to a misdemeanor, but Judge Timothy Walsh denied the request citing a history of alcohol-related incidents of domestic violence.The felony conviction will likely cause Michaels to lose his job."He's taken away his career," said Walsh," if there is a career left. Four times!"When asked if Michaels was still employed by the department, Monica Munoz, a spokesperson for San Diego Fire-Rescue, only said, “we can’t give information about personnel issues.”10News has also requested comment from a spokesperson with SDFD's personnel department. Public records website, Transparent California, shows Michaels made 3,407 in 2016.The victim, Jane Doe, initially told investigators she feared for her safety, according to prosecutors. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A local non-profit is taking a page from online dating to help San Diegans match with a new career. It's more sophisticated than swiping left or right, and it can help anyone looking for a job or career change.It's called My Next Move. The San Diego Workforce Partnership released it after a yearlong effort. The highlight is a 60-question questionnaire that gauges a job seeker's interests. For each task, a job seeker will choose an option from "strongly disagree" to "strongly agree." Examples include investigating the start of a fire, repairing and replacing locks, or examining blood under a microscope.At the end, the system will provide a list of sectors that the best fit the job seeker, including local retraining programs, salary information, top hiring employers, and open jobs. "Think of it like Match.com for careers," said Sarah Burns, the partnership's director of research application. "Once you get a career match, it says okay, well if you want to take the next step in this relationship, then here's what you do."Burns said the system will give each test-taker a percentage matching their interests to the potential career. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A judge has issued a temporary restraining order against the City of San Diego, barring them from removing pepper trees in Kensington.The trees are more than 100 years old, planted when the neighborhood was first marketed as a housing development in the early 1910s. While the neighborhood was once filled with them, resident Maggie McCann estimates there are only about 33 left.“I think they are pretty looking,” said McCann. “They’re part of the fabric of the neighborhood.”McCann was one of the residents who filed the TRO against the city. She said she has been working for more than a year to designate the remaining pepper trees as “Heritage Trees” and “Parkway Resource Trees” under the City’s Conserve-a-Tree program.When she heard a pepper tree on the 4500 block of Edgeware Road had been cut down on Monday, she rushed to process the TRO.“We don’t know why these trees are being cut down,” said McCann.McCann suggested it may be related to a plan to bury SDGE utility lines in the neighborhood, but the City of San Diego denies that claim.In a statement to 10News, a city spokesperson said the tree that was cut down Monday had been “evaluated more than a year ago as part of a project to repair a damaged and uneven sidewalk caused by the tree’s growth. Noticeable decay and deteriorating tree structure were also observed during the evaluation and the adjacent property owner was notified at that time.”On Tuesday, the remnants of the trunk remained on Edgeware Rd. Decay could be seen in the interior part of the tree, though much of the large trunk appeared to be healthy.“The tree really didn’t need to be removed,” argued McCann.But the city said their decision was more about damage to the sidewalk than whether the tree could have survived a few more decades.“In this instance, the imperative to make the sidewalk safer for residents was weighed against the city’s desire to preserve neighborhood trees and continue to grow our urban canopy. Due to the tree’s damaging impact to the adjacent sidewalk and its decaying state, the decision was made to remove it in order to preserve public safety,” wrote the city spokesperson.A resident on the block said the sidewalk had been recently replaced. The new pavement had been cut around the tree and was undamaged.Several other pepper trees in Kensington have been marked for removal. On Tuesday, McCann walked the streets, posting copies of the TRO on the trees.The fate of those trees remains unknown. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego family wants to warn other about daytime burglars who may be posing as door-to-door salespeople.The Alvarado family just moved to a home in Allied Gardens. It is a safe neighborhood, but they noticed there are a lot of solicitors.Tuesday afternoon they were burglarized by a couple of young men wearing matching outfits.“I left the house for 25 minutes to pick up my daughters from school," Vanessa Alvarado said. "When I was coming down the street I noticed two young men walking quickly down the street, from my driveway, carrying both my guitars."Her daughters were also in the car as they drove up to their home, and burglars.“They looked up and saw me. They knew who I was,” Alvarado said. "They knew my car and they just sped down the street, made a sharp right turn."One of her daughters noticed the young men’s matching clothes.“I think they looked like salesmen. I noticed one of the had a binder in his hands with several things on top, which turned out to be my personal belongings,” Alvarado said.The home was locked at the time of the burglary.The thieves went into the backyard and broke in through a bedroom window, which was open a few inches but had a stopper device on it aimed to prevent anyone from opening the window further.Regardless, the thieves pried off the screen, and pushed the window open.The men made off with numerous items, including guitars, Kindles and jewelry. They left no fingerprints.“I went from trying to be strong for my daughters to realizing my wedding rings were gone and at that point, my heart just shattered into a million pieces,” Alvarado said.Now, the family is getting security cameras and they have dowels in the windows so they can't be opened.  1744
