SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The invisible wounds of war are a heavy burden to carry, long after deployment. Tom Voss, an Army veteran who served in a scout-sniper platoon, knows this feeling well. "I took shrapnel to the head from a rocket-propelled grenade. And then I also had a lot of survivors guilt around the death of my platoon sergeant because that day I was given the day off," said Voss.He says while deployed, there's no time to process these war injuries. "You have a lot of these questions come up, years and years later. A lot of veterans struggle with, could I have done more, can I be forgiven? A lot of these moral questions," said Voss.After serving, he wanted to bury the traumas of war; in the beginning, he was incapable of dealing with the stresses caused by combat experience. "I was using alcohol and then on top of it abusing the medications that were given to me to kind of numb myself to the experiences, because I didn't know how to process them or move through them or move on from them on my own," said Voss. "I had a lot of suicidal ideations, so that's getting to the point of like, how am I going to take my own life?"Voss decided he needed to make a drastic change. He and a fellow veteran walked 2,700 miles across the country, from Wisconsin to California. It was on that trek where he began to heal and learned about holistic approaches to deal with trauma, like meditation and yoga. Voss now travels the world, teaching veterans and their families these techniques. "It's really up to us as veterans to educate the community about the experiences of what it's really like in combat and how it impacts veterans coming home, how it impacts communities, coming home. And most importantly, how it impacts families," said Voss. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The man who jumped on stage during a Taylor Swift concert and assaulted a security guard was charged Monday with a deadly beating in the Midway area, police said. Christian Ewing, 29, was charged for the death of 57-year-old Gregory Freeman, according to SDPD Homicide Lt. Anthony Dupree. Officers got a 911 call about an assault near the Interstate 5 overpass at 3900 Rosecrans St. the evening of Dec. 5. A witness said a victim was on the ground and another man was hitting him with an object, investigators reported. He died three days later of his injuries. The suspect fled the scene, police said.Ewing was arrested on Dec. 21 for a parole violation and rebooked Monday on suspicion of murder. In 2015, Ewing jumped on stage at Petco Park as Taylor Swift was performing. Swift’s personal security guard, David Durkin, told Ewing he was not allowed to be in the area. During a struggle, Ewing seriously injured Durkin. Prosecutors previously said Ewing had several arrests in multiple states, an active warrant for a theft-related offense out of Florida, and a felony conviction for transporting drugs from out-of-state. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The back-to-back announcements of promising clinical trial results from Pfizer and Moderna may usher in a new era for vaccine technology.Both companies have candidates that rely on a new kind of vaccine strategy: RNA. Preliminary data show both candidates are more than 90 percent effective.On the surface, the vaccine candidates look like any other you’ve taken. They work by training your body to build up defensive weapons against a virus, like antibodies and T-cells.But instead of training your body by introducing a killed virus or a fragment of a virus, the vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer introduce a set of instructions called messenger RNA enclosed in a little blob of fat.“The key concept of RNA is that they’re messages, and they’re meant as short-term messages,” said Dr. Shane Crotty of the La Jolla Institute for Immunology.Crotty said there are 5,000 to 10,000 messages within a cell at any given time.Once administered, the mRNA in the vaccine instructs some of your cells to make the coronavirus’ signature spike protein. The spike protein on the surface of the coronavirus allows it to infiltrate and hijack cells.Even though the spike protein is just one of about 25 genes the virus has, preliminary results from the clinical trials suggest it is enough material to train the immune system without making the recipient sick.Crotty likened the process of training the immune system to spotting a sedan. If the coronavirus is a car, the spike protein might be the door.“There's no way that car door could turn into a whole car, but it's enough of a piece of a car for your immune system to recognize that car if it saw it again,” he said.Scientists started by sequencing the virus’ DNA from a sick patient, then encoding that genetic sequence into an mRNA instruction molecule that can be read by the manufacturing part of cells.From there, Dr. Crotty said it’s a bit like the messenger app Snapchat.The mRNA gets injected into the body, sending temporary instructions to your cells that last for a while, then disappear. mRNA does not genetically modify cells, he stressed.“They’re around as messages for some period of time and then they go away, and the cells get back to their normal job of reading their own messages instead of reading the messages you’re injecting in the vaccine,” he said.The concept has been around since the 1990s, but there are currently no RNA vaccines on the market for any pathogen, so Dr. Crotty said it’s hard to estimate how long their protective effects will last.Some vaccines offer a lifetime of protection, like the measles vaccine. Others offer decades of protection. The flu vaccine only lasts about six months.Dr. Crotty said the length of protection depends on how fast the virus mutates and how long the immune cells survive in the body.But even if the COVID-19 vaccine turns out to need an annual update, he’s optimistic. The best feature of RNA vaccines is that they can be quickly reprogrammed.Both Moderna and Pfizer are still in their Phase 3 trials, but they expect to finish them by December. Together, they estimate they’ll have enough doses for about 35 million people by the end of this year, primarily for healthcare workers and high-risk individuals. 3250

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego has more than 2,300 jobs vacant but is struggling to fill them.The jobs run the gamut from 9-1-1 dispatchers to water utility workers to swimming pool managers to civil engineers. The list of vacant positions came to light after the city Audit Committee discussed struggles with worker retention and recruitment at its meeting this week. "We need to do something about that," Councilman Scott Sherman said. "Change the culture and get it to where employees are really looking forward to going to work and like being where they are."Michael Zucchet, who heads the Municipal Employees Association, says the city is losing workers to other agencies in this county and others because they offer better pay and retirement benefits, such as a pension. He says the problem has gotten worse since the unemployment rate has dropped to a near-historic low 3.5 percent. The city in 2012 switched most new employees to a 401(k) style retirement plan after voters passed Proposition B. That proposition is now in legal limbo after the California Supreme Court said the city skipped a key step in the approval process. "The City of San Diego is hemorrhaging employees to other jurisdictions," Zucchet said. "We have documented people who have been city employees for a long time, have no interest in leaving, but they can't pass up a 20-30 percent pay raise in Chula Vista, Carlsbad, National City and these other places."Zucchet gave examples of current job advertisements showing accountants in Chula Vista making 20 percent more than those in the city of San Diego, senior management analysts in Encinitas earning 38 percent more, associate planners in Poway making 21 percent more, and a police service officer in Coronado makes 27 percent more. A search on the city's hiring website shows 53 jobs, but Zucchet said those positions reflect multiple openings. As of March 1, the city had 2,373 vacant positions, up about 8 percent from a year earlier. The city auditor is now investigating how the city can improve worker retention and recruitment. A July study found the city had an overall 10 percent turnover rate, but that it was 15 percent with millennials, who may be gaining experience at the city before moving on to higher paying positions. 2289
