SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Mission Bay High School was locked down Friday due to reports of a weapon on campus.San Diego Unified School District confirmed just before 11 a.m. the high school was locked down Friday morning over reports of a weapon on campus. The lockdown was lifted after almost an hour, according to the district.School police searched classrooms and spoke with students, but no weapon was located on campus.Resource officers will be on campus throughout the school day out of an abundance of caution, the district added. 538

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- La Mesa residents and local business supporters didn't waste time rebuilding their community Sunday morning following a long night of violent protests that left several cars and buildings destroyed.Good Samaritans armed with brooms and paint brushes worked quickly to restore walls inscribed with graffiti and sweep streets strewn with debris.Only hours earlier, hundreds of rioters descended on the small La Mesa Village business district setting fire to numerous vehicles and buildings including a bank, and looting business."Our small businesses are devastated and many were already on the brink due to COVID19. La Mesa Village has been the heart of small business in the city and is a beautiful place for dining, events and memories," wrote Phil Ortiz on a fundraiser page.Ortiz'a gofundme page has already received over ,000 in donations. The goal is to raise ,000."All proceeds will go directly to small businesses that were destroyed or damaged," Ortiz wrote on the page.Saturday's protests started with a mostly peaceful march that drew over a thousand protesters. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Mayor Kevin Faulconer has directed city staff to reinstate San Diego Fire-Rescue Department’s Girls Empowerment Camp that was abruptly canceled last week.The event was canceled one day after attorney Al Reva sent a letter to the city’s attorney and organizers of the event.The letter claims that Reva’s client Rich Allison was “deterred and prevented from timely enrolling his son in this camp because boys were not invited to attend, based solely on their sex.”RELATED: Girls empowerment camp rescheduled after abrupt cancellation?Families who previously registered for the canceled camp will have first choice of which of the two weekends the camp is being offered they would like to participate in.“Our firefighters, staff and volunteers put their hearts and souls into this event,” said Fire Chief Brian Fennessy. “We are committed to moving forward with this excellent opportunity for young people. Last year, we heard that the Girls Empowerment Camp was a priceless experience for the campers. We want the same for our 2018 participants.”The Girls Empowerment Camp is a free two-day camp for youth ages 14-18 “regardless of age or gender.”The camp introduces participants to career opportunities in firefighting and encourages them to consider public safety as a career option.“We made a commitment to hundreds of kids and their families and we are going to stand by that,” Mayor Faulconer said. “This is an important camp that teaches kids what it’s like to be a firefighter and exposes many of them to a career opportunity they may not have considered previously. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Interstate 15 Express Lane signs are being changed from white to green, with other improvements, at a cost of .5 million, the San Diego County Association of Governments said Thursday.A research effort determined that the existing signs could be difficult for drivers to read, and that information about toll rates and permission to use the lanes was unclear, according to SANDAG."There's quite a bit of confusion on the motorists part, trying to understand, can I actually get in there as a carpool or not?" said Ray Traynor, SANDAG's director of operations. "Having a system that's clear to the end users is vitally important so that the lanes operate effectively."A spokesman for Caltrans says research showed a green sign with white text was more difficult to read, with the amount of information on the sign. The I-15 Express Lanes stretch for 20 miles between SR-78 in Escondido and SR-163 in Kearny Mesa.
