An accused serial killer, known as the “Golden State Killer,” is expected to plead guilty Monday in person, in a university ballroom.Joseph James DeAngelo was arrested in April 2018 at his home near Sacramento, California. He is accused of heinous crimes, including rape and murder, in almost a dozen California counties in both Southern and Northern California during the 1970s to 80s.DeAngelo is expected to plead guilty at Monday’s hearing to 13 counts of murder, 13 counts of kidnapping and admit responsibility for another 60+ rapes and other crimes. As part of the plea deal announced earlier this month, DeAngelo would be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in August. Victims and victims' families are not expected to make comments on Monday. They will get a chance to make victim impact statements later this summer.Monday’s hearing will be held in the Sacramento State University Union Ballroom, a large room that can hold roughly 2,000 people for a reception, according the university’s website. An Arizona man was awarded a 5,000 verdict after a jury decided a dentist at a popular dental chain wrongly pulled all his teeth without consent.DeWayne Smith won his case against Western Dental Services and Dr. Steven Nguyen in January, ending a three-year legal battle.“They treated him like garbage,” said Craigg Voigtmann, one of Smith’s attorneys. “They took out all of his teeth and then abandoned him.”Western Dental disputes the allegations. In a statement, the California-based chain called the jury’s decision surprising and disappointing.On a Saturday in January 2015, Smith scheduled an emergency visit at the Western Dental. He was having severe tooth pain in his right upper wisdom tooth. It was his first visit ever at the dental office.“I really don’t like going to dentists but I was in pain,” Smith said.At the appointment, Western employees and Nguyen told him Smith had serious dental issues and that he would eventually need to replace all his teeth with implants or dentures.Smith understood, and under pressure from Western Dental sales staff agreed to a long-term treatment plan. However, Smith said he “made it very clear” that he only wanted to have one tooth pulled that day to relieve the pain.During the procedure, Western Dental staff numbed the area, sedated Smith with nitrous oxide, and then packed his mouth full of gauze, according to court testimony.Smith left not knowing they had extracted all his teeth.“I go to pulling this gauze out and then I realize there’s nothing there on the bottom, and there’s nothing there on the top,” he said. “I just fell to the floor. I didn’t believe what I was seeing.”Employees testified that Nguyen left immediately after the procedure and that no one appeared to tell Smith what they did.After the procedure, Western Dental also sent Smith a ,000 bill, he said.“(It’s) like running over a dog in the middle of the road and driving off,” said Smith’s fiancé, Sharon.Nguyen testified that he had a direct conversation with Smith, who told him he wanted to have all of his teeth extracted that day. Western Dental also produced consent forms with Smith’s signature.But Smith’s attorneys claimed those forms were manufactured after the procedure. And one Western employee testified against the company in hours of damning testimony.Bianca Esquer was a patient care coordinator at Western Dental from 2013 to 2015. She worked directly with Smith during his appointment.In a deposition and at trial, Esquer said that Smith made it clear he did not want a full extraction that day. She also discussed how employees and dentists are paid bonuses and commissions based on how much treatment patients get.Esquer also testified it’s hard to believe anyone would agree to have all their teeth pulled on their first visit and without detailed planning.“You don’t send someone home with a full extraction without teeth,” she said.Smith was not provided dentures from Western Dental until months after his procedure, he said.Scripps station KNXV in Phoenix reached out to Nguyen for comment through his attorney, Jeff Tonner. ANAHEIM (CNS) - Orange County health officials are investigating 12 cases of Legionnaire's disease among people who traveled to, resided in, or worked in Anaheim during the month of September.  The discovery has led to the shutdown of two cooling towers at Disneyland, which nine of the 12 people visited during September.  "On October 27, 2017, when the Disneyland Park was identified as a common location of eight (8) cases, HCA contacted the Disney organization and set up site visits at the Park to assess potential sources. Since that time, HCA staff have visited Park properties and worked with Disney to identify potential sources of Legionella," said Jessica Good, spokeswoman for the Orange County Health Agency."On November 3, 2017, Disney reported to HCA that records provided by a contractor indicated that (as part of their quarterly, routine testing) elevated levels of Legionella had been identified in (two of 18) cooling towers on October 2, 2017 and treated/disinfected by the contractor on October 4, 2017. Neither Disney nor the contractor would have been aware of the human cases at that time."On November 1, 2017, Disney had the towers taken out of service. They report having performed subsequent testing and disinfection and brought the towers back into service November 5, 2017. Test results will not be known for approximately 10-14 days."Because of the existence of human illness and the inability to assure the cooling towers are clear of Legionella bacteria until test results are known, the County of Orange Health Officer issued a Health Officer's Order on 11/8/17 requiring that Disney take the towers out of service until they are verified to be free from contamination, at which time the Health Officer will lift the order Disney independently made the determination to take the towers out of operation on 11/7/17, after meeting with HCA staff but prior to the order."The 12 cases range in age from 52 to 94, Good said. Ten of the 12 were hospitalized and one person with additional health issues died. That person did not visit Disneyland, she said.There is no known ongoing risk associated with the outbreak, according to Good.Health agency officials say the disease is becoming more common, citing 55 reports of Legionella disease in Orange County through October 2017, compared with 53 for the entire year of 2016 and 33 in 2015.Officials say Legionella, at low levels, poses no threat to humans and is commonly found in human-made water systems. It becomes problematic when it is in large quantities, typically due to stagnant or improperly sanitized spas and water systems.When Legionella bacterial levels are high, it can be transmitted through inhalation of contaminated water vapor. Typical sources are improperly sanitized spas; indoor and outdoor fountains, showers, and cooling towers (which emit water vapor into the air) used as part of air conditioning systems in large spaces such as hospitals, hotels, entertainment venues, etc.Symptoms of legionellosis develop 2-10 days after exposure, and include fever, chills, cough, muscle aches, and headaches. Infected persons often have pneumonia and may need to be hospitalized. It is treated with antibiotics, which can improve symptoms and shorten the length of illness.Persons with legionellosis are not infectious; the infection is not spread from person to person.Those most at risk of getting sick from Legionella infection include people who are smokers, have chronic lung disease or weak immune systems, and people over the age of 65.   3561
