SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Friends of the Marine hit and killed in the Midway area said Monday the driver who struck him and left is a coward.Victor Molinar, 18, of Chicago had just graduated from boot camp and was stationed at Camp Pendleton about to start combat training. Ricardo Camacho met him in basic training and got the terrible news over the weekend.“He was a good kid, always say making people laugh. He had a good head on his shoulders. From the start when I met him, I knew he’d be a good Marine," said Camacho.Molinar was out with his friends Saturday night visiting the local night spots on Midway Drive and somehow got separated from his friends. They went to look for him and found his body in the road.Police say the driver who hit Molinar fled the scene. No suspect has been identified.“He was willing to give up his life defending his country and do all the right things and for him to do that and not even stopping to see who it was? It just sucks," Camacho said.Camacho told 10News the Marines have a buddy system and doesn’t know why Molinar was by himself. Police are looking for the suspect, but have little to go on right now. Camacho, who is having a hard time coping with his loss, told 10News he knows one thing about the suspect. “He’s a coward. Bottom line. Karma plays a big part in things, and he’ll get his. If he ran then he won’t come forward they’ll just have to find him. If he didn't do it then. He won’t come forward. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For most of the year, a favorite Ladera Street surf spot has been closed after part of the cliff gave way. After the cliff collapsed the City declared an emergency situation because lifeguards have raised concerns about having access to the beach. In a City Council meeting Monday, a decision was made to fast-track a project that will stabilize the cliff by scaling it back. Members of the Sunset Cliffs Natural Park Advisory Board want to the City to find a different solution. "This is just a temporary fix but it's causing permanent damage to the whole cliffside," said Point Loma resident Aaron Taylor. Aside from urging the City to spend more time on the issue, there are some on the committee who think the access point should be moved to another location altogether."You go down the stairs now you're in the tidal zone you're in a danger zone," said Kim Haynes. "Whereas the stairs, if they were moved farther south, it would empty you to a beach except at extreme high tide."Councilmember Lorie Zapf issued this statement to 10News about her decision to support the project: 1131

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Eight new cases of hepatitis A were reported throughout the county over the last week, according to the San Diego County Health Department. In total, 544 cases of hepatitis A have been reported throughout San Diego County. The new numbers come after the Board of Supervisors Monday extended the state of emergency amid the hep A outbreak.  RELATED: Board of Supervisors extends state of emergency for hepatitis A outbreakSince the outbreak began, 20 people have died from the infection. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Every Thursday afternoon in Logan Heights, people line up to get food.Angela Brannon-Baptiste is the woman who started the pantry and the organization that supplies it, called "It's All About the Kids".The non-profit has been serving local families since 2004, handing out more than 1.5 million meals and counting."They tell us that for many of them this is the only food they're receiving because there's just no money to buy food," said Baptiste.When the pandemic hit the group saw the need grow almost overnight."We saw hundreds of additional families come to see us each week and it was a bit frightening," Baptiste explained.Although they'd like to help everyone, they're restricted by their own means.Unlike some other food distribution programs that operate on a first come first serve basis, It's All About the Kids takes a more targeted approach."We decided we needed to narrow that down and really work with the schools to identify who was most in need, so that's who we help now," Baptiste said.At this point, that help is going to about 2,200 families currently on the program.Those who show up get boxes of not just something to eat, but something good to eat.Batiste says it's important they provide as much fresh food as possible, " I think that food is so important and that is our responsibility as successful adults to give back to those that are less fortunate and to help them, so that's just always been my mantra." 1463
