BEIJING, April 14 (Xinhuanet) -- Computer sales declined in the first three months of this year for the first time since 2009 worldwide.PC sales fell 1.1 percent in the first quarter to 84.3 million worldwide, according to tech research firm Gartner Wednesday, well short of its forecast for 3 percent growth.The dip was the first since the second quarter of 2009, when most of the world was still in the grip of economic turmoil."Although the first quarter is traditionally a slow one for PC sales, these shipment results indicate potential sluggishness, not just a normal seasonal slowdown," said Gartner, in a statement.Consumers select IT products at an IT fair named "Sham Shui Po computer festival" in Hong Kong, south China, Feb. 15, 2011. BERLIN, May 26 (Xinhua) -- German health officials said Thursday that cucumbers imported from Spain was one source of a recent deadly E. coli outbreak in northern states that killed three people and made hundreds sick.The Hamburg Institute for Hygiene and the Environment (HU) found that four cucumbers in a local market were contaminated by Enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC), and three of them were imported from two separate Spanish suppliers, Hamburg state health authorities said.The origin of the fourth cucumber was still under investigation, officials added.German supermarkets began to pull Spanish cucumbers off shelves Thursday afternoon following the findings in Hamburg. The food- monitoring agencies in the northern states were launching investigations on vegetable markets, the federal agriculture ministry said in a statement.Figures showed that Spain is Germany's second largest supplier of cucumbers within the European Union, accounting for some 40 percent of the country's cucumber imports.Scientists said that EHEC is a virulent strain of gut bacterium that can cause severe stomach upsets, diarrhea, stroke and coma. It would lead to kidney failure in extreme cases.Germany saw a terrible E. coli outbreak two weeks ago, starting from the northern states like Hamburg and then spreading to eastern and southern regions. CANBERRA, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Technology may have a harmful effect on children's development and creativity, Australia's report found on Tuesday.The Pilot Pen Australia Creativity Report found that children could be depending too much on technology such as computers.Written by psychologist Kimberley O'Brien, the report suggested that students are becoming scared of handwritten tasks as there is no spelling or grammar check tool to pick up their mistakes as they go along."Children who develop this kind of dependency on computer software are less likely to write using a pen and paper given that they will feel a vulnerability to failure," the report said.It said using software that immediately tells children to correct errors like spelling and grammar could disrupts their thought patterns and stunts their ideas, and children who hand write are able to produce almost twice as many ideas as those using computer technology to write a creative story.The report studied 300 Year five and six children, and found handwritten essays were completed significantly faster and contained a higher standard of sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, cohesion, ideas development and organization than those completed using keyboards.A further study found students in Years two, four and six produced up to twice as many ideas writing on pen and paper as those on computers.O'Brien said the results were due to computers putting extra pressure on writers to edit as they go rather than get their ideas down first and edit minor mistakes later.O'Brien said children were most likely to develop their handwriting skills between the ages of eight and 10, and she urged all teachers and parents to ensure their children met community standards for legible handwriting.However, she said that computers are a good support tool, and they should not replace handwriting entirely.

BEIJING, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- As of Jan. 28, 77.4 million mu (5.16 million acres) of crops had been harmed by the ongoing drought, and 2.57 million people were faced with drinking water shortages in China, the national drought control authorities said Sunday.Local governments of the affected regions must make efforts to monitor drought conditions, speed up the building of water projects, increase drought-fighting material reserves and grant subsidies to the drought-stricken population, said officials at a meeting attended by Chen Lei, deputy head of the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters (SFDH).The National Meteorological Center (NMC) forecast the drought to worsen in the next two months, saying Sunday that the drought-hit north China and regions along the Yellow and Huaihe rivers would receive little rain or snow in February and March.Chen, also minister of water resources, stressed the importance of drought relief efforts, guaranteeing agricultural production and ensuring drinking water safety for boosting consumers' confidence, controlling consumer prices and inflation and maintaining economic growth.Since last Autumn when the drought began, local authorities have assigned 9.55 million people and 2.15 million sets of drought-fighting machineries to draw 8.2 billion cubic meters of water to irrigate 110 million mu of crop land.
