A second report in as many days is predicting an “extremely active” hurricane season.The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released their annual August update for the Atlantic hurricane season Thursday. They believe there will be roughly 24 named storms, and 12 hurricanes.“The primary reason why we’re forecasting such an active season isn’t as much the storm activity that we’ve already had, but the large-scale conditions we’ve observed during July and what we expect to see during the peak of the season,” said Dr. Phil Klotzbach, from Colorado State University.NOAA says current oceanic and atmospheric conditions are making 2020 an active storm year, including warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures, reduced vertical wind shear, weaker tropical Atlantic trade winds and an enhanced African monsoon.Both groups say their predictions are for overall seasonal activity and do not predict landfall. A suspected suicide bombing at a wedding hall in the Afghan capital, Kabul, has killed 40 people and injured dozens more, officials say.The blast ripped through a venue near the city's international airport, where a gathering of religious scholars was taking place, the Afghan interior ministry said. The blast occurred around 6:15 p.m. local time, police said.It was likely caused by a suicide attack, according to Najib Danish, spokesman for the Afghan Ministry of the Interior. The gathering was being held to mark the birthday of the Prophet Mohammed, he said.At least 60 people were injured, the health ministry reported.The security situation in Kabul has deteriorated sharply in the past year.In August, at least 34 people were killed in an attack which targeted an education center. A pair of districts in the Midwest will add Muslim women to the ranks of the US Congress for the first time.Michigan Democrat Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar, the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party's nominee, will secure their respective seats in strongly Democratic districts following primary victories earlier this year that effectively decided their races.Tlaib is endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America, a burgeoning left-wing group that also counts New York Democratic congressional nominee Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez among its members.Omar, in addition to being one of the first Muslim women in Congress, will also be the first Somali-American member. She came to the US more than two decades ago as a refugee. Tlaib actually campaigned with Omar ahead of the latter's primary race earlier this year.Omar also had the backing of Ocasio-Cortez in her primary race, and she will come to Congress having been an open critic of the Israeli government's treatment of Palestinians.Omar will take the seat vacated by Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress. Ellison is leaving Congress as he vies to become Minnesota attorney general.Tlaib will fill the seat formerly occupied by Michigan Democratic Rep. A Tempe woman was arrested after her infant daughter ate mac and cheese with THC butter in it. Tempe police report that early Thursday morning, after receiving a report from the Arizona Department of Child Safety, they arrested 25-year-old Alaina Marie Limpert at her home.Police say on Tuesday, Limpert's 1-year-old daughter ate mac and cheese made with butter containing tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, which is the chemical in cannabis that gets you high. A witness reportedly told investigators that Limpert "laughed about the side effects the child experienced." Limpert later put the child in the cold water of the backyard pool to "shock" her, court documents said.Hospital officials later confirmed that they found THC in the infant's system. Inside the home, police report they found two marijuana grow tents, psilocybin mushrooms and many containers of hash oil with business cards attached to them. Limpert was arrested on one count of child abuse. 1000
