An armed white man in his twenties was arrested Thursday afternoon at a Missouri Walmart, Springfield police said.Officers responded to a call of an active shooter at the Walmart Neighborhood Market, Police Lt. Mike Lucas said. But no shots were fired and no one was injured, police said."All we know is the fact that he walked in here heavily armed with body armor on, in military fatigues and caused a great amount of panic inside the store. So he certainly had the capability the potential to harm people," Lucas said. The man was detained by an off-duty fireman until officers arrived and took the suspect into custody, police said in a statement."At this time, the investigation is ongoing and we are working to determine his motives," the statement said.Lucas said the recent spate of mass shootings in public places may have placed customers on heightened alert, leading them to call police reporting an active shooter."And then obviously what's happened in Texas and Dayton and all that kind of stuff in the last seven days -- that's on everybody's mind," Lucas said. 1085

As the country continues to rebound, we are hearing a different strategy on kids going back to in-person schooling.“We highlight the need for in the reopening to focus on the children who are most at risk and prioritize those with the greatest needs,” said Christopher Morphew, dean of the Johns Hopkins University School of Education. Education and public health experts at Johns Hopkins outlined a six-point plan based on safety, health and academic needs. They focus first on kids with remote learning barriers, special education students, and those who rely on schools for food support.“We are seeing reports from children who say they aren’t learning as much, that they don’t have access to people to help them, that they don’t feel as comfortable learning,” said Morphew. The experts argue districts with limited resources should start with bringing back the youngest children first because they don't do as well with virtual learning. But they also warn a virtual backup plan is needed should virus cases show up in school.Families who may not feel comfortable going back or have special higher risk circumstances like a grandmother taking care of a young child should also have virtual options. There are other concerns beyond educational needs.“The kids get a lot of social and emotional development. They get relationships with the teacher, which is extremely important for them and their friends, and cutting kids off from that for a critical period of their lives, for an extended period, is really detrimental to them,” said Dr. Josh Sharfstein with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.More than 20 million children rely on school breakfast or lunch for food. Surveys indicate one in five mothers report their children younger than 12 years old are going hungry. Another key role schools play – teachers and other officials recognize about one in five cases of possible child abuse. 1922

Best Buy has succeeded during the online shopping era by beefing up its customer service. Once again, the retailer will lean on its customer service chops by expanding its partnership with Apple to offer repairs on iPhones and MacBooks at all of its stores. The two companies announced the agreement on Wednesday. Best Buy had offered Apple-certified repairs at select stores and will now bring repairs to its nearly 1,000 stores across the United States. Best Buy's specially trained Geek Squad employees will fix customers' Apple devices. For Best Buy, the expanded deal with Apple will give its existing customers another reason to visit its physical stores and could help the retailer attract new shoppers."This will drive traffic to Best Buy stores," said Michael Pachter, managing director at Wedbush Securities. "If the repair is something that will take an hour, the consumer will be captive in the Best Buy store and likely to purchase something."Best Buy has worked in recent years to improve customer service at its stores, a key advantage over Amazon and other online players. The retailer has positioned itself as the expert in a complicated consumer electronics market. It retrained sales workers so they could offer better advice to puzzled shoppers having trouble deciding which TV model or smart watch to buy."Our business strategy is based on offering superior levels of customer service," Best Buy said in its annual securities filing.Best Buy's relationship with Apple is also critical to its business. Apple is one of Best Buy's largest suppliers, along with Samsung, Hewlett-Packard, Sony and LG. Last year, Apple expanded its distribution to Costco, a move many analysts believed was a blow to Best Buy.Best Buy has around 900 Apple mini-stores at its locations that offer Apple products. Often, Apple mini-stores are placed at the front of Best Buy's big-box stores."Apple would say that Best Buy provides the best retail experience for their products and services outside of their own home," former Best Buy CEO Hubert Joly told analysts last year. For Apple, the expanded deal with Best Buy gives customers new access points for repairs outside of Apple's own store network. Apple said it has tripled the number of authorized third-party service locations in the past three years."We're always looking at how we can reliably expand our network of trained technicians and we're excited to partner with every Best Buy store," Tara Bunch, Apple's vice president of AppleCare, said in a prepared statement. 2537
