DENVER — A passenger’s vaping device is being blamed for a fire that disrupted operations at Denver International Airport last month.According to a Friday release from the Denver Fire Department, the dissembled device was inside the passenger’s travel bag when it caught fire as it passed through a TSA X-ray machine in the south checkpoint the evening of Jan. 30.The screening process was not a contributing factor in the fire, the release said.Airport officials released surveillance video of the incident Friday. However, the incident prompted DIA officials to temporally halt train service and security screening, causing significant delays throughout the airport.Fire investigators say the device’s exposed lithium-ion battery likely made contact with conductive materials in the bag, causing the battery to create a “dead short.” The short caused the battery to heat up combustible materials within the bag, leading to the fire.The fire was determined to be accidental, and no charges were filed.The FAA prohibits electronic cigarettes and vaping devices in checked bags, but the agency does allow the devices to be carried in a carry-on bag. DETROIT — Two Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officers helped save a life Friday afternoon. The department says officer Ben Lasher was patrolling Belle Isle in Detroit, Michigan when around 12:31 p.m. Michigan State Police notified him of a woman threatening to jump off the MacArthur Bridge. "She was very upset," Lasher said. "She was crying. She was looking over her shoulder at the river. I was quite concerned because she didn't want me to come across the barricade."At the scene, Lasher witnessed the woman crying while standing next to the guard rail of the bridge. “She asked me to stay by my patrol truck at first,” Lasher said. “I was able to talk to her and find out her name."Lasher continued talking with the woman, while officer Steven Converse — who was also patrolling Belle Isle — arrived to the scene. "The bridge isn't very tall but the cold water, the body won't accept," Lasher said. "You won't do well in that environment very long."Converse approached where the woman and Lasher were standing and helped convince her to go with them to Lasher's patrol truck and seek professional help. After several minutes, the woman agreed, and the officers helped her climb over the barricade and into the patrol truck for safety."Holiday seasons are hard," said Lasher. "A lot of people have strong feelings, good or bad, and this young lady was having a hard time. And I was able to be in the right place at the right time."What helped, in part, was the training these officers receive for these types of situations.“Part of what conservation officers are taught is to engage in conversation with the suicidal person and to ask what has happened that has brought them to this point of suicide,” said Michael Comer, a contract police psychologist for the DNR Law Enforcement Division. “COs listen to the person's story, establish a rapport and demonstrate that they care about the suicidal person. They have been taught that they will not be able to change the person's mind until they first understand the person's story and despair.”The woman was taken to a local hospital for a check-up. According to the DNR, the scene was cleared around 1:01 p.m., exactly 30 minutes after officer Lasher received the original call. "There's hope for tomorrow," Lasher said he told the woman. DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) - On the 80th Anniversary of Del Mar horse racing the industry is facing extra scrutiny over protecting the animals. This comes after 30 horses died at the Santa Anita Racetrack this past year.One of the newest safety protocols is bringing on two monitoring veterinarians who are stationed at elevated observation points to oversee morning workouts. If the veterinarian is concerned about a horse, they can radio outriders policing the track to remove horses and have them undergo a follow-up examination for soundness. "There's been a lot of concern over racehorse welfare and safety the past few months, it's something that Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has always been concerned about," said Dr. Alina Vale, one of the monitoring veterinarians.But Vale says they're now even more cautious and vigilant, working to rebuild the California racehorse community."The more subtle signs that I'm looking for are horses that might have mild injuries that haven't been detected before, so we're trying to catch those mild injuries before they become major injuries," said Dr. Vale. The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club also adopted new medication standards and can randomly select any horse for drug testing at any time. Workout activity will also be monitored closely.
