When 4-year-old Mateo forgot his favorite toy, Bear, in San Diego during a recent trip, employees of a local hotel made sure Bear had a good time in America’s Finest City.Mateo and his parents visited San Diego earlier this month. They didn’t realize they left Bear in their hotel room at the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay. Employees were able to find Bear, but made sure he enjoyed his extended vacation in San Diego before sending him back to Los Angeles. Bear enjoyed the hotel pool and water slide, lunch, and the spa before his trip back home. Hotel employees took photos of Bear’s adventures and sent him back home to his family, along with a few goodies for Mateo.Mateo and his family are relatives of 10News reporter Melissa Mecija. 744

When you think of police officers, you may think of the badge or the local precinct may come to mind, but a lasso?“You got to have a lasso in a small town,” Sgt. Jace Peterson said with a laugh.Sgt. Peterson says it is an item he never leaves home without. Home is Nephi, Utah and it has been most of his life.“Oh, I was a good kid who got in very little trouble,” Peterson said.Nephi is a "blink and you miss it" stop along Interstate-15 between Salt Lake City and Las Vegas.Sgt. Peterson is just one of 10 full-time officers.“I just patrol all the corners of town, backstreets and the main thoroughfares,” he said.A disorderly conduct call sometimes comes in the form of a farm animal.“We’ve had cows and goats,” Peterson said. “I mean you name it and they run loose around here.”Sgt. Peterson knows he is just one call away from a surprise class reunion.“It makes it entertaining when you stop somebody you know or you’re on a call with somebody you went to high school with,” he said.Life moves at a slower pace in these parts. It is a stark contrast from what officers in major cities across the country are dealing with.“The rioting and the protest,” Sgt. Peterson said slowly shaking his head. “I mean, it starts to wear on you a little bit and know that other officers aren’t as lucky as we are.”The Nephi Chief of Police echoes those sentiments.“You know, the great thing is I had the big city policing experience when I was young,” said Chief Mike Morgan. “When I was young, I could get out and do the things that needed to get done and I was able to learn; that experience brought me here.”Like Peterson, Chief Morgan has come home.“There’s no place like home,” Chief Morgan said with a chuckle.The move from big city life means big changes.“There are no protests at all down here,” Chief Morgan said.The department is prepared for the day some of the bigger city issues may creep into town.“We’ve got all the equipment I could ever ask for and it’s such a great community,” Sgt. Peterson said.Even a worldwide pandemic is not affecting the small-town police force much.“I mean, we know it’s there and we know it’s just one bad day away, but until then, we’re just going to sort of enjoy it,” Sgt. Whole Foods is getting even more Amazon-y.Amazon, which purchased Whole Foods last year, is offering its Prime members an additional 10% off sale items when they shop at Whole Foods.The additional discount will apply to hundreds of products throughout the stores. To get the discount, Prime members will have to scan the Whole Foods app at checkout, after signing into the app with their Prime membership.Earlier this year, the companies launched free two-hour delivery on Whole Foods groceries in 10 test cities, through Amazon's Prime Now service. WHEATON, Ill. -- As the death toll from the coronavirus nears 200,000, recovery can be difficult for those who have survived the illness. But the first ever double-lung transplants for COVID-19 survivors is providing new hope for medical centers around the country and world.Brian Kuhns is at the beginning of a long and grueling road to recovery.Each day, he endures several difficult physical therapy sessions to rebuild his weakened body.“This is real tough,” said Kuhns. “All this stuff runs through my mind that I have to do and now I can't be like this.”Kuhns, who initially didn’t take the coronavirus seriously, contracted the deadly virus in early March. The illness was like nothing he’d ever felt before.“It was just like, I'm kind of walking dead. Fever, shaking so hard I can't believe it.”The virus that has now taken the lives of more than 190,000 Americans was destroying his lungs.About 100 days on life-support and isolated from his family for more than three months, the 62-year-old grandfather was near death more than once.“Yeah, I thought I was going to die for sure. I thought it was over,” said Kuhns.After 39 years at his side, Kuhns' wife Nancy couldn’t be in the hospital with him. On the phone, she pushed him to keep fighting.“I keep give him a lot of confidence even when they told me he wasn't gonna make it. I kept telling them that he was,” she said.His doctors at Northwestern Memorial Hospital determined his only chance for survival was a double-lung transplant.After 10 hours in surgery, Kuhns became only the second known coronavirus patient ever to have both lungs replaced.“I fought back, gasping for air, 24 hours a day. As hard as you could breathe,” said Kuhns.Dr. Mahesh Ramachandran, the chief medical officer at Northwestern Medicine’s Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital, says they’ve already discharged 125 COVID-19 patients since the pandemic began. Rehab, says Dr. Ramachandran, is essential to recovery.“They get quite deconditioned. They get quite weak. They have neurologic problems, cardiac problems that need to be managed before they can safely go home,” said Dr. Ramachandran.Two months after the revolutionary transplant, Kuhns is still getting used to his new lungs.“I could feel it all the way down,” he said with a deep breath.But he continues to fight and implores others to wear a mask and avoid others or face the consequences.“This is a crazy disease. Some people get away with it and other people it nails,” said Kuhns. “I was one of the ones it nailed. So, you want to make a choice. You know which one you want to be.”After nearly six months in the hospital, if all goes well, he could go home by the end of the month. 2692
