BEIJING, March 1 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Monday urged political advisors to offer practical suggestions to the country's pressing task of coping with climate change.Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), a political advisory body, made the call as he presided over a lecture given to the Standing Committee of the 11th CPPCC National Committee.Xie Zhenhua, Vice Minister of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and one of China's leading negotiators for climate change talks, gave committee members a lecture about key climate change issues and China's stands on them.The lecture is aimed at helping the members, whose main duty is to use their expertise to give suggestions to policy makers, to familiarize with and pay more attentions to the issue.Jia said while the global climate change is a major challenge for all countries, China's handling of the issue could impact on the country's overall economic and social development as well as the people's interests.Jia asked the members to conduct further studies in accelerating the adjustment of economic growth mode, industrial and energy structure, and controlling greenhouse gas emissions so as to offer advice to help the country to cope with problems in its development.

Food safety is closely related to people's life and health and economic development and social harmony," Li said at the first plenary meeting of the recently-established food safety commission under the State Council.According to Li, this year's campaign will focus on the prominent issues of food additives, edible farm products, food production processing, food circulation and import and export, livestock slaughter, the catering industry and health supplements industry, among others."We should understand the foundation for the country's food safety is still weak and the situation is grave," Li said. KAMPALA, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Monday met officials of the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) amidst increased lobbying by international oil giants to enter the country's oil sector.A State House statement issued here said that the CNOOC officials who met Museveni at State House Entebbe, 40km south of the capital Kampala, expressed interest in joining Uganda's oil and gas sector by partnering up with Tullow, an Irish oil company.Tullow, which has oil blocks in western Uganda, is seeking a partner to help it start oil production in the country.The CNOOC meeting comes weeks after Italian oil giant, Eni Spa, also expressed interest in joining the country's oil sector, promising an oil refinery and a power plant.Eni wants to enter the sector by buying stakes of another oil company Heritage Oil which jointly operates two blocks with Tullow on a 50-50 percent venture.The Eni-Heritage deal which is yet to be concluded is embroiled in controversy as Tullow exercised a pre-emption move saying it has the first option to buy the Heritage stakes, a move the government said it would not accept because it would create a monopoly.Museveni told the CNOOC officials joined by Tullow officials that the government will discuss all proposals and announce its decision soon."President Museveni said that the government will discuss all proposals by companies operating in the oil and gas sector adding that the country looks forward to welcoming new companies," the statement said.The Museveni-CNOOC-Tullow meet also comes days after Aiden Heavey, Tullow's chief executive met Museveni urging Uganda to honor contractual obligations following the Eni-Heritage deal.Uganda's recently discovered oil is attracting a lot of attention from international oil giants.So far the country has discovered an estimated two billion barrels of oil and according to experts there is a possibility of discovering more.

BEIJING, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- China denied on Thursday that its economic and trade exchanges with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has violated a United Nations (UN) resolution.At a regular press conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang was asked to comment on a report by Yonhap news of the Republic of Korea quoted by China Daily saying Pyongyang announced two islets adjacent to China's northernmost port city Dandong would be developed by Chinese enterprises as a free trade area."This project is purely normal economic and trade contact between the two countries. It does not go against the UN relevant resolution of sanction on the DPRK," he said.The UN Security Council last June adopted a resolution imposing tougher sanctions on the DPRK, including a tighter arms embargo and new financial restrictions, after the DPRK announced a successful nuclear test on May 25, the second since 2006.The resolution also underlined that "measures imposed by this resolution are not intended to have adverse humanitarian consequences for the civilian population of the DPRK."
