SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- County Supervisors Wednesday sent a letter to Governor Gavin Newsom asking him to take a second look at San Diego, potentially allowing shuttered businesses to reopen amid COVID-19. In the letter, Supervisors Kristin Gaspar, Jim Desmond, and Councilmember Chris Cate of the sixth district said Newsom’s “one-size-fits-all approach to closing entire business sectors is misguided as evidenced by the many sectors in San Diego forced to close their doors again despite not having contributed at all to the rise in our local cases.”Supervisors also pushed the governor to give more control to local leaders and health officials. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As a woman lay paralyzed from a horrific accident, police say someone was inside her car, stealing from her.  The search for that thief is now turning to San Diego County."She was the nicest, most wonderful person I've ever known," said Don Nelson.Nelson says his wife of 27 years, Terri, was on her way to pick up her father for a hospital trip in August when a truck rear-ended her car at a stoplight in Riverside.  As she lay with her neck broken, amid the commotion of bystanders and first responders coming to her aid, police say someone got into her car and stole her purse.Detectives say within days of the accident, surveillance images show her using Terri's credit cards and writing checks in her name. Nelson says as some ,000 worth of purchases were made at various businesses, from fast food restaurants and Albertsons to Costco."I think that's the lowest form of life that could possibly be. You have to be a sorry person to do something like that," said Nelson.For three months, Terri was paralyzed and on a ventilator, until she passed last week from complications from the accident.  Her husband's grief is not the only emotion that consumes him. There is also anger. He's still dealing with collection agencies seeking money from the thief's shopping spree.  During that crime spree, police believe the woman rented a Nissan Rogue in Terri's name, before the CHP pulled that car over on a highway in San Diego County. The two men inside the car have yet to lead detectives to the woman, but police hope tips from the public will."I just can't believe a lightning bolt didn't strike the person. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Approximately 200 California Army National Guard troops are in San Diego County at the request of San Diego Sheriff Bill Gore, to deter looting following last weekend's events in La Mesa.About 100 troops are stationed at the La Mesa Police Headquarters. The rest are in an undisclosed area ready to move anywhere in the county.“We’ve seen arson, we’ve seen looting, and especially in La Mesa where we were there assisting La Mesa Police Department,” said Gore. “To be quite honest, the crowd overwhelmed us, we had not enough resources there, and we were in a position of defending the La Mesa Police Department, so it didn’t get burned to the ground like two banks did.”After a chaotic scene unfolded in La Mesa on Saturday following a peaceful demonstration, several businesses were looted and damaged, two banks burned down, and La Mesa City Hall sustained fire damage.“I believe that the police were overwhelmed in La Mesa, and they need backup,” said La Mesa resident Teresa Olmsted. “There’s those that are trying to get their point across and those that are taking advantage.”Gore said the troops do not have the same authority as officers and cannot make an arrest, but they can detain suspects until officers arrive.They will guard businesses and buildings where needed.“They do not have peace officer powers.
