CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A Tijuana police officer who allegedly took part in a plot to steal more than million from a Chula Vista home, which he and other defendants believed was a stash house containing drug money, was ordered Monday to stand trial on two conspiracy charges.Jesus Estrada Torres, 35, is accused of planning with five other men to rob the home in late January, after an undercover FBI agent told them a shipment of money would be delivered to the residence, according to testimony at the defendant's preliminary hearing.A fellow officer, Marco Quijas-Castillo, 27, pleaded guilty earlier this year to conspiracy to commit robbery and faces two years in state prison. Four others are also facing various charges in connection with the attempted theft.RELATED: 2 Tijuana police officers among group charged in Chula Vista home burglaryTestimony at Torres' preliminary hearing indicated the defendants were told two unarmed individuals would be inside the three-bedroom home, which was actually being rented by the FBI for the operation.The criminal complaint alleges Castillo and Torres crossed into the United States from Mexico with Ignacio Martinez-Cruz, 33, and met up in Chula Vista with fellow defendants Nicholas Jeremiah Shaw, 25, Mario Eugene Hall, 35, and Tomas Emmanuel Ramirez, 29, who traveled to Chula Vista from San Bernardino County.Castillo and Torres allegedly "provided counter-surveillance" at a Kohl's store in Chula Vista, while the other four men met with the undercover agent, according to the complaint.Castillo and Torres also provided surveillance at the Chula Vista residence while Shaw walked up to the house, and "entered a code into a lockbox containing a key to enter the house," the complaint alleges.The men had allegedly planned to tie up the two people believed to be inside the home, then take the money, but were arrested by law enforcement upon approaching the home, according to testimony.The defendants are due back in court June 30 for a readiness conference. 2022

(CNS) - Homicide detectives Thursday were investigating the death of a man found in a Chula Vista bank parking lot.At about 10:25 p.m. Wednesday, a 911 caller reported finding a man down on the ground with blood surrounding him in the parking lot of the Bank America branch on E Street and Third Avenue, Chula Vista police Lt. Jason Deaner said.Officers responded to the scene and found the man with apparent wounds on his body, Deaner said. The man, whose age was not immediately available, was pronounced dead at the scene.The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office was called in and will perform an autopsy on the man to determine the cause and manner of death, the lieutenant said.No further details were immediately available. 763

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The FBI and Chula Vista Police are asking for the public’s help identifying a man suspected of robbing six credit unions in San Diego County. The suspect, who was dubbed the "Gloved Robber" after wearing grey gloves during all of the heists, has so far robbed six credit unions. The robberies have all taken place between December 28, 2018 and February 23, 2019. According to the FBI, after entering each of the businesses, the suspect approached the tellers, handing them a note demanding cash. The FBI says the man wore a similar style of clothing in several of the robberies. Along with the grey gloves, the man wore sunglasses and hoods to cover his face. The robber also carried a calculator in his hand and held it to his ear like a cellphone during several of the robberies. (KGTV) — Popular South Bay brewery Novo Brazil is expanding its footprint in Chula Vista this month.Novo Brazil Brewery will hold a grand opening for its new brewpub on Dec. 11 in Otay Ranch Town Center.The 12,000-square-foot spot can host more than 950 guests and features a 300-seat restaurant, full bar, indoor and outdoor beer garden, two 14-foot-by-10-foot televisions, shuffleboard tables, and a kid's area with ping-pong tables, video games, and other activities.RELATED: Ballast Point purchased by Chicago-based brewerOn the production side, the brewpub boasts 60 taps with about 40 of those dispensing beer and the rest a combination of Novo's kombucha and hard seltzer creations.
