(KGTV) — Oceanside's shoreline was closed Tuesday after the sighting of a 9-foot long hammerhead shark. Oceanside Lifeguards temporarily closed the city's beaches from Wisconsin Ave. to Harbor Beach around 11:30 a.m. Police officers were dispatched on a boat offshore to keep an eye out for the shark, according to the city. The shark was last seen swimming about 100 yards offshore, south of the Oceanside Pier. The shoreline was reopened at 2:30 p.m. after a final search of the area came up empty.RELATED: 564

Public health officials have hypothesized that opioids reduced life expectancy for non-Hispanic white people in the United States from 2000 to 2014. Researchers have now quantified how much opioids are shortening US life spans.The researchers noted that the number of opioid overdose deaths are probably underestimated because of gaps in how death certificates are completed.From 2000 to 2015, death rates due to heart disease, diabetes and other key causes declined, adding 2.25 years to US life expectancy. But increases in deaths from Alzheimer's disease, suicide and other causes offset some of those gains. On average, Americans can now expect to live 78.8 years, according to data from 2015, the most recent data available. That's a statistically significant drop of 0.1 year, about a month, from the previous year.Women can still expect to live longer than men -- 81.2 years vs. 76.3 years -- but both of those estimates were lower in 2015 than they were in 2014.Life expectancy at age 65 remained the same in 2015. ODESSA, Texas (KGSTV) - A man with San Diego ties who survived the Texas shooting rampage Saturday is recounting the moment he drove into the crosshairs.Daniel Munoz, 28, moved from San Diego to Texas a year ago to work in the oil industry. He was in his car on the way to meet a friend for a drink, when he yielded to a car coming off an interstate. He immediately saw what appeared to be a rifle barrel in the hands of a driver and the shooter, Seth Ator.Earlier, the shooting spree had started with a routine traffic stop, when Ator suddenly started shooting at officers. During the ensuing chase in the Odessa/Midland area, he shot at other drivers. One of those drivers was Munoz. After he saw the rifle barrel, he told the Associated Press, "This is my street instincts. When a car is approaching you and you see a gun of any type, just get down. Luckily I got down … sure enough, I hear the shots go off. He let off at least three shots on me."Munoz believes one shot hit the engine, another struck the driver's side window, and a third hit a rear window. Some shattered glass punctured his left shoulder, causing him to bleed heavily. As he made the frenzied drive to a hospital, the shooting rampage continued.The gunman would hijack a mail truck, before ramming police vehicles outside a theater, where police would shoot and kill him. In the end, Ator would kill seven and injure 22. As for Munoz, he says he's physically okay but shaken."I'm just trying to turn the corner and I got shot. I'm getting shot at? What's the world coming to? For real? OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man died early Saturday morning after being hit by a vehicle while crossing State Route 76, according to the Oceanside Police Department.The crash happened just before 1 a.m. on SR-76 near Old Grove Road.Police say a 2005 Lexus sedan was traveling westbound on the 76 when the driver struck a pedestrian attempting to cross the road. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.After hitting the man, the driver pulled to the center median and waited for police to arrive.“Neither Alcohol or drugs were a factor in this collision on the driver’s part. It is unknown the pedestrian was under the influence of any substance at this time,” police said.The name of the pedestrian has not been released. (KGTV) — Farmers in Oceanside are gearing up to harvest a never before seen crop in San Diego County: Coffee.“We have an aggressive plan to make Southern California the next leader in the super specialty coffee industry,” said Jay Ruskey of Frinj Coffee.He began working with farms in San Diego five years ago to start planting coffee in old avocado orchards.This summer, they will finally harvest their first crop.“We tried to choose the varieties that not only perform well, but have a certain flavor characteristic that the consumer really enjoys,” said Ruskey.Frinj has also been growing coffee in Santa Barbara, where they have already started harvesting the beans.Bird Rock Coffee Roasters is the first local outlet to sell it. Their website has one pound of the Cuicateco grown by Frinj for 0.“If the coffee quality matches the price, that's all that matters,” said Jeff Taylor, president of Bird Rock Coffee.They recently sent the coffee to the website, Coffee Review, which gave the Cuicateco a 92 out of 100.He said he has been working for six months with Ruskey to get the coffee in his stores. He hopes to get beans from Oceanside as well when they become available in the fall.“I see a rapid expansion I think it's going to be huge,” said Taylor of San Diego county’s potential as a coffee growing region.Ruskey is already ahead of him, planning to double the number of plants they have already in 2019.“We would love to see another 50,000 coffee plants here in Southern California this year, and expand to millions in the next ten years,” said Ruskey. 1594
