BEIJING, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese official Li Changchun on Tuesday called for stepped-up efforts to push forward China's cultural development and prosperity here in Beijing.Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks while visiting an exhibition held in honor of deceased Chinese painter Wu Guanzhong.Wu is widely recognized as the father of modern Chinese painting. BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Health has said it will draw upon its experience from the H1N1 flu control to ensure prevention of the general flu, as the World Health Organization (WHO) announced plans for the post-pandemic period."Based on the experience from A/H1N1 prevention and control, we will revise emergency plans and will continue flu prevention efforts in a bid to ensure people's health," said a statement released late Tuesday by the ministry.Figures from the ministry show that the weekly new A/H1N1 cases have remained below 30 since mid-April. Further, no deaths have been reported for 12 consecutive weeks.While announcing the coming of the post-pandemic period, WHO Director-General Margaret Chan warned that the A/H1N1 virus will continue to spread as a seasonal flu for some years.Chan urged health authorities to maintain alert for the virus.So far, about 800 deaths from A/H1N1 influenza had been reported in China, Health Minister Chen Zhu said earlier.More than 100 million Chinese have been vaccinated against A/H1N1 flu as of May 14.The A/H1N1 virus was first identified in Mexico in April 2009. More than 211 countries and regions have reported laboratory confirmed cases of the flu, including more than 18,000 deaths.

BEIJING, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Growth of China's foreign exchange reserves are slowing as the total reached 2.4543 trillion U.S. dollars by the end of June, up 15.1 percent year on year, the People's Bank of China (PBOC), the central bank, announced on Sunday.Statistics from the central bank show China's foreign exchange reserves increased by 7.2 billion U.S. dollars in the second quarter, a drastic decrease compared to the last quarter in 2009, when reserves grew by 126.5 billion U.S. dollars.Reserves in the first quarter increased by 47.9 billion U.S. dollars.The PBOC also said the declining euro was the major reason behind the slowing growth in foreign exchange reserves.The exchange rate between the euro and U.S. dollar had fallen by nearly 20 percent between the end of 2009 and May this year, according to the PBOC.China's basket of foreign exchange reserves include the U.S. dollar, euro, Japanese yen and others.On a monthly basis, reserves increased by 43.4 billion U.S. dollars in April followed by a reduction of 51 billion U.S. dollars in May, while June saw reserves increase by 14.8 billion U.S. dollars.China's gold reserves stood at 33.89 million ounces at the end of June, according to PBOC figures.

BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Some 87 percent of Chinese who studied abroad in 2009 received financial support from their parents, China.com.cn, a government-run website, reported Sunday quoting a survey by education research company MyCOS.The survey divided its interviewees into two categories: undergraduate students who graduated from China's top 211 universities in 2009 and those who did not.According to the survey, 1.64 percent of undergraduate students graduating from China's top 211 universities in 2009 went abroad for study, 0.61 percentage points higher year on year.Some 0.69 percent of undergraduate students from the other category also pursued overseas studies.According to the survey, the majority of the students who studied abroad took economics and business management as their major.The survey also showed 9 percent of those studying abroad received scholarships from the foreign institutions while 3 percent supported themselves through part-time jobs. One percent were funded by the Chinese government.Chinese universities and colleges graduated 6.1 million students in 2009, according to statistics from the Ministry of Education.

HAIKOU, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- China is bracing for a strong tropical storm named "Mindelle", which is expected to skim the southernmost island province of Hainan between Monday midnight and Tuesday morning.At 8 a.m. Monday, a tropical low pressure system across the South China Sea intensified into the fifth tropical storm of the year, after being upgraded to a strong tropical storm eight hours later.The storm, by the name of "Mindellu", which means dandelion in Korean, is expected to approach the Beibu Gulf off the southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region after skipping Hainan, the Hainan provincial meteorological bureau said.Local authorities in Hainan have halted railway, shipping services and tourism programs and called fishing boats to return to ports as they braced for the storm.Both cargo and passenger shipping services were halted at 5 p.m., according to the ban issued by the provincial maritime affairs bureau.Also, passenger and cargo train services through Qiongzhou strait between the mainland and Hainan were halted at 5 p.m.Meanwhile, more than 26,000 fishing boats have returned to their ports.Tourism activities, such as diving and water-motorbike-driving in Sanya, the famous tourist city in southern Hannan, have also been halted as residents prepared for the storm.The Hainan provincial government said they would spare no efforts in protecting the safety of fishermen and tourists, as well as strengthening the monitoring of reservoirs.
