A simulation program to train nurses is gaining in popularity. Shadow Health is using virtual patients to train real people in hopes of quickly bringing those real students into the workforce.From pediatrics to maternal health, the future of nursing school is happening now.“The technology is so good, you’ll get an answer. You might not get the answer you’re looking for; you’ll have to rephrase and that’s the way it is in real life too,” said Lorrie Rilko, an assistant professor at George Washington University’s School of Nursing.She was a nurse practitioner for 30 years and then decided it was time to help the next generation of nurses.“My greatest responsibility is to prepare future nurse practitioners in the art of accurate history taking and skilled physical exam and then putting all of the pieces of the puzzle together to come up with a clinical diagnosis,” Rilko said.She says George Washington University was already using this simulated technology when the pandemic hit. The pandemic put the program in the perfect position to continue training new medical professionals and it allows them to learn, practice and fail on computers rather than on real live patients.“It's kind of like telehealth,” Rilko said. “We’ve had telehealth and until we had to really rely on telehealth, there were a lot of barriers to overcome."Brent Gordon is the managing director for Elsevier's nursing and health education business, which recently acquired Shadow Health.“One of the challenges in higher education institutions, specifically in the United States and this is true worldwide, is that they have challenges meeting the demand, they have capacity constraints,” Gordon said. “One example is shortage of clinical space. Digital simulations help solve that problem.”He says one of the real problems that the virtual education solves is that of communication, which he says can be at the root of medical malpractice claims.“Nurses are increasingly graduating, passing the (National Council Licensure Examination) NCLEX but not entering practice with the clinical reasoning skills they need to be successful on day one," said Gordon.Rilko said her students enjoy the virtual interaction, and they like training on their own time. A Massachusetts school district is waiting to see how many students test positive for the novel coronavirus after one student came to school after testing positive for the virus. Almost 30 teens had to go into quarantine. The student in question reportedly got the positive test results on Friday, Sept. 11, and still went to school the following Monday.Are there legal ramifications to knowingly going out in public spaces while infected with COVID-19?Mike Lawlor, an associate professor of criminal justice at the University of New Haven, says there are two types of law that could be at play: criminal law and civil law.If someone gets infected and you can trace it back to a specific exposure where the person knew they had COVID-19, then that would be a case of reckless endangerment."Almost every state has a law like this. On top of that, if you can show that people intentionally did this and it’s certainly conceivable that someone intentionally tried to expose people to the virus-- if you can show that they actually got the virus-- then that would be an assault," explained Lawlor.But Lawlor says whether criminally prosecuting is a good idea or not is debatable. What is more likely is a civil case in the form of negligence or willful misconduct."This does have a cost when you do it, right? There’s an emergency cleaning operation that has to take place. These other students have to be provided for in distance learning. And if anyone were to be able to demonstrate they were exposed and became positive, the health consequences of that could be very significant," said Lawlor.He says, either way, both the student and the parents run the risk of criminal prosecution. 1692

A Maryland woman says she failed a drug test the day she gave birth to her daughter and was reported to state social workers, all because she ate a poppy seed bagel for breakfast.WBAL-TV in Baltimore reports that Elizabeth Eden ate a poppy seed bagel for breakfast on the morning of April 4. She went into labor later that day and went to St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson to deliver her daughter.However, while she was in labor, a doctor told her she had tested positive for opiates.Poppy seeds come from the same plant which is used to make opium, heroin and other drugs, so it's common for drug tests to pick up on trace amounts of opiates.However, while the federal government measures a positive test at 2,000 nanograms a milliliter, St. Joseph Medical Center measures a positive test at 300 nanograms a milliliter. The hospital says the lower threshold for a positive test means they can treat more children born with drugs in their system — the Baltimore Sun reports that the number of babies born with drugs in their systems increased by 56.6 percent between 2006 and 2015. Eden says the hospital refused to release her daughter to her for five days following the false positive. She also says she was assigned a caseworker, who promptly dropped the case when learning of her breakfast on the morning of April 4.Eden isn't alone. In 2017, an Edgewood, Kentucky woman was assigned a social worker after she tested positive to opioids, saying she ate bagel chips with poppy seeds shortly before giving birth. A student was wounded in a shooting Friday morning at a high school in Ocala, Florida, the Marion County Sheriff's Office said, shortly before students were to walk out as part of a national protest against gun violence.The student was shot in the ankle at Forest High School and transported to a hospital with a wound not considered life threatening, said Kevin Christian, Marion Public Schools spokesman. The victim is 17.A school resource officer heard a loud bang at 8:39 a.m., Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods told reporters.Three minutes later, the officer took a 19-year-old suspect -- who's not a student -- into custody without incident, Woods said.The motive is unclear for what's the 20th US school shooting this year."It's a shame what society has come to in that we even have to be here on a school campus," Woods said. A University of Florida men’s basketball player is now able to breath on his own and speak while recovering in Gainesville, according to a statement from Keyontae Johnson’s parents. Johnson collapsed on the court Saturday while playing Florida State in Tallahassee.“Keyontae is in stable condition today, breathing on his own and speaking with us and with his doctors here at UF Health,” the statement attributed to Nika and Marrecus Johnson reads. “We feel so much love and support from everyone, and we’re beyond grateful for the care and attention that Keyontae has received throughout these past several days.” 622
