A New Jersey man who died of a brain-eating infection called primary amebic meningoencephalitis was exposed while visiting the BSR Cable Park and Surf Resort in Waco, Texas, during the summer, the Waco-McLennan County Public Health District said Friday.Water samples taken by local, state and federal health officials at the beginning of the month "found evidence of Naegleria fowleri," the amoeba that causes the infection, according to the health district.Fabrizio Stabile, 29, visited the surf resort before developing symptoms in September.A GoFundMe page launched by those close to him said he was mowing his lawn when he developed a severe headache. It hadn't gone away by the following morning, and his symptoms progressed until he was unable to speak coherently or get out of bed. He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors found the amoeba in his spinal fluid. "The worst-case scenario was unfolding in front of our eyes," the site says.The health department concluded, "epidemiologic and environmental assessment indicate that exposure likely occurred at this facility."Although the amoeba itself was not found in water samples from the park, "the presence of fecal indicator organisms, high turbidity, low free chlorine levels, and other ameba that occur along with N. fowleri indicate conditions favorable for N. fowleri growth."The tests were taken from the park's Surf Resort, Royal Flush and Lazy River features. Those areas are to remain closed until "all health and safety issues have been addressed and mitigated appropriately," the health department said, adding that the owner of the park is cooperating and working to develop a "comprehensive water quality management plan to include current regulatory requirements."The BSR Cable Park said on its website that it is installing a state-of-the-art filtration system on the three features to ensure that they are "as clear and clean as humanly possible."However, the park is interpreting the test results another way: "Water tests come back clean," the website proclaimed, adding that "comprehensive test results have now confirmed that the water at BSR Surf Resort meets every standard for safety."BSR also offered its condolences: "On behalf of the entire staff at BSR Surf Resort, our hearts and prayers are with Fab Stabile's family, friends, and the New Jersey surf community. The thick dust cloud, known as the Saharan Air Layer, is making a 5,000 mile trip from the northern Africa desert to North and Central America along the east to west Trade Winds along the equator. The Saharan Air Layer is between 5,000 and 20,000 feet above the Earth's surface, and dust plumes travel over the Atlantic Ocean several times a year between spring and fall. This year's dust plume is thicker than normal, the concentration of particles in Puerto Rico are the highest in decades. A north Georgia high school teacher was arrested on Wednesday after he barricaded himself in a classroom and fired a shot from his handgun out of a window, police said.No one was injured in the incident at Dalton High School, except for a student who injured an ankle running through the school, police spokesman Bruce Frazier said.The shooting about 85 miles north of Atlanta heightened the already tense debate around guns in schools in the wake of the deadly mass shooting in Parkland, Florida two weeks ago.The incident began about 11:30 a.m. when Randal Davidson, a 53-year-old social studies teacher, refused to let students into his classroom, Frazier said. When the principal put a key in the door in an attempt to enter, Davidson fired a shot from a handgun through an exterior window of the classroom, according to Frazier.The school immediately went into lockdown, and police quickly arrived and evacuated the immediate area around his classroom. After about 30 to 45 minutes, Davidson agreed to surrender to authorities and was taken into custody without further incident, Frazier said.Frazier said there was no evidence that Davidson was trying to fire at anyone."It certainly seemed like he didn't have any intention to harm anybody else," Frazier said.Davidson had been a teacher at Dalton since 2004 and was the play-by-play radio announcer for the high school's football team, Frazier said. A new warning Tuesday cautions toxic chemicals were discovered in several popular back-to-school items. Everything from crayons and markers, to binders and water bottles.The U.S. Public Interest Research (USPIRG) groups tested 27 school supplies and found that some of them contained toxic chemicals like asbestos, lead, benzine and phthalates, which have been linked to cancer and other health hazards.“You can't assume that things are automatically safe when they're on our store shelves,” says Danny Katz, with USPIRG.Katz's team found Playskool crayon from Dollar Tree had trace amounts of asbestos. But that wasn't it.A blue jot band binder from Dollar Tree tested positive for phthalates.  Additionally, dry erase markers from Amazon tested positive for benzine, even though the packaging says nontoxic.“Just because a product says nontoxic like that, doesn't mean it's been tested for all the different chemicals,” Katz explains.Katz says what you should look for is a symbol, which confirms the product has been tested and approved by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.His team has put together a list for parents and teachers of products that tested positive for toxic chemicals and those that didn't.“There's just no reason that these chemicals need to be in the school supplies,” Katz says. “There's plenty of school supplies that don't have them.
