SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- After a rise in COVID- 19 cases, the governor closed many indoor activities, including places of worship. Churches around the county were forced to make changes to their services, but some embrace the new scenery.Sunday morning mass was held outdoors for parishioners at Saint Agnes Catholic Church. Members brought their beach chairs to worship in the church’s parking lot.“I love being able to see people here, gathered together, and worship together,” says Father Bill Marquis.The changes came after the governor’s announcement to stop indoor activities due to the rise in COVID-19 cases across the state. San Diego county is one a few dozen on the state’s watchlist.Saint Agnes Catholic Church says it is still offering virtual services, but it was the members who requested to have the “beach chair mass” on Sunday morning.“Parishioners asked me if we were going to have mass on Sunday, I said we were going to live stream it,” says Father Marquis. “She says we would still like to have an outdoor mass on Sunday, if possible. I said why, and she said because we want to receive communion. That was the deciding factor for me.”As many churches around the county make changes to their services, some places of worship are working with city leaders to hold outdoor services. Poway officials approved a plan to share park space with places of worship and fitness centers. The City of El Cajon is looking into a similar idea. 1452

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two more women have come out to share their stories of clergy child sex abuse publicly. Cousins Judith Louise-Worachek and Cathie Ray say the abuse happened decades ago while attending school at St. Jude in Southcrest.Each alleges they were abused multiple times by Priest Gregory Sheridan, who is named on a Diocese of San Diego list of priests with credible allegations against them. "Inevitably we would end up in his bedroom with me on his lap, it didn't feel right, but you're not going to talk bad about a priest to your parent," said Ray.RELATED: San Diego woman accuses Monsignor of sexual abuse, asks for other victims to come forwardFor many years neither of the women knew the other had also been abused."We made an agreement through the years that we would not ever tell our parents, our grandmother, especially our grandmother," said Ray.The women said their family members adored the priest, and they did not want to cause their family pain, deciding to wait to share the story until after those loved ones passed away."Now it's time to come forward and speak my truth and help others," said Louise-Worachek. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A local family contacted Team 10, concerned about the recent marriage of their elderly father to his new caregiver.  In a petition filed in probate court through an attorney, the family of James Donald Hess accused his new wife and former caregiver of "physically and verbally abusing him, and asserting undue influence over him." "It's just heartbreaking," said Dede Hess about her father-in-law. "I was just like, this isn't real." Dede Hess said her father-in-law, known to many as Don, is not in the best health. In the petition, it said his "health steadily declined" after Don's second wife passed away in February 2016 and that he suffered from "depression and loneliness" and became dependent on in-home caregivers. In the petition, it claimed that a caregiver named Nicky convinced Hess to marry her after just a few months. Hess and Nicky Shepard -- now Nicky Hess -- were married on October 14, 2017. Hess was 86-years-old. Nicky was 64.  "I think of her as a shark that smelled the blood in the water," Dede Hess said. RELATED: Resource guide for elderly San Diegans and families Dede Hess also learned more about the past of her father-in-law's new bride.  "When she met dad, she was married, but she was a newlywed," Dede Hess said. "Two weeks after her divorce was final, she married dad." Team 10 found Nicky was divorced at least five times.  The family alleged Nicky convinced her new elderly husband to "withdraw large sums of money from his investment accounts" and that she "forged [ his] name on documents," according to the petition. It also said she placed his health "in extreme danger" by keeping medication from him or giving him too much.  "I would love to see some justice on behalf of my father-in-law, especially if he's ill," Dede Hess said.  Team 10 learned that Don Hess is now hospitalized. His family said his heart stopped for several minutes and he also suffered from renal failure and pneumonia. The conflict brought both sides to probate court in mid-March where the judge acknowledged the difference of opinion regarding Mr. Hess's marriage.  "I know that you have very different views about whether this is on one hand, a recent marriage of an elderly person to his caregiver and the vulnerability that that can present and the possibility of financial abuse versus, on the other hand, a person who is engaging in his right in his older years to find love and get married," said Judge Julia Kelety. The petition is to remove Don Hess from the new trust made late last year. Hess's children claimed he was not competent at the time.  The petition said the new trust "largely disinherits his natural children... in favor of Nicky."  "The document was done in December so we have issues about its validity," said attorney Todd Stevens. However, the attorney present for Don's side said that is not the case.  "It appears to be a validly, executed trust by Mr. Hess," said attorney Lisa Frisella. Frisella said in court Mr. Hess went to a lawyer on his own and amended the trust.  Team 10 visited the Hess home to get Nicky Hess's side of the story.  She was home and did not want to talk in person. However, less than an hour later, Nicky called Team 10 and said over the phone: "All I need is love. I don't even think about his money. His kids did not approve our marriage."  Team 10 asked about allegations of elder and financial abuse. Nicky Hess said, "No, no way. I never elderly abuse my husband. I love him so much." In the petition response filed by Don's lawyer, it also denied any abuse and said the "children were more concerned about their inheritance than his happiness." In court, Judge Kelety temporarily "suspended" Mrs. Nicky Hess as successor trustee until another court appearance scheduled for April 5th.  It was a small victory for Dede Hess and the other Hess children, as they pray for their father's recovery. "I don't want this to happen to anybody else," Dede Hess said.  According to the National Council on Aging, elder financial abuse is likely underreported. San Diego (KGTV)- A local middle and high school team sweep a popular robotics competition beating out groups from all over the world.They call themselves “Team Inspiration.” The group of students has been working with robotics for nearly ten years.The team is comprised of six different schools in San Diego, including: Del Norte High, Scripps Ranch High, Rancho Bernardo High, Westview High, The Cambridge School, and Black Mountain Middle School.Last month the team competed in the 2020 International RoboSub Competition. Each team had to build an underwater robot.“The basic tasks include going underwater, seeing and recognizing images underwater, and going to wave points underwater,” says team member Colin Szeto.This Is the second year the group participated in the competition. Due to COVID-19, the competition was done virtually this time around.“It was a pretty good equalizer because we all got the same zoom playing field,” says Aditya Mavalankar.The student updated their robot design from last year and built an additional robot for the competition.“The idea was that both of them would go in the water together to distribute the tasks so that we could have more of an advantage,” says Ashiria Goel.The students also built the sensor navigation parts on the devices. It can “basically tell how far it is from other objects,” says Mavalankar. “We have cameras on multiple sides of the robots. We have hydrophones that’’s able to create an acoustic pinger in the pool.”Team Inspiration took home first place in the overall competition, technical design, and website. It becomes even more complicated when figuring out the best use of your skills and the career path that will pay the bills. “I think STEM majors are very important because that’s kind of the direction we are heading toward,” said Andrea Villanueva, a first-generation college student at UC San Diego majoring in Global Health. Villanueva has her sights set on medical school, hoping to become an OB/GYN. The median income for the career in San Diego County is 5,000. Not everyone will choose to head down the medical route. “If what you’re looking to do is get a career right out of college that’s going to pay well, then you might want to think about a major that’s going to give you some hard skills,” said Daniel Enemark, an encomiast with San Diego Workforce.RELATED: UC San Diego tops for female STEM graduates According to the San Diego Workforce Partnership, there are seven priority job sectors in San Diego County that are high-wage, high-growth, and in-demand. For Villanueva, her drive for success is staying true to her passion.“It’s a challenge, but I think it is well worth it. It was good to know that financially if I go down this path, I would be pretty well off. But the biggest motivation for me was helping people in a way that is, so hands-on and you’re making a huge impact in someone’s life,” said Villanueva.
