BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- China's National Meteorological Center forecast Thursday that heavy rains would continue during the next 24 hours in northeast China, a region already soaked following weeks of torrential rains.The observatory continued to issue an orange rain alert, the second most serious level, on Thursday, warning that rainstorms would hit most parts of the provinces of Liaoning, Jilin and Helongjiang over the next 24 hours, adding pressure to the country's efforts to combat floods.Rain-triggered floods have left 1,072 people dead and 619 others missing this year in China. BEIJING, July 26 (Xinhua) -- The Ministry of Health on Monday publicized a draft revision of the national standard of iodine content in edible salt, in which it stated the upper limit should be lowered by half.The average iodine content would be reduced to between 20-30 mg per kg of edible salt, from the current 20-60 mg, according to the draft.Iodine intake was "excessive" in five provinces and "above normal" in 16 other provinces, although the national level was "acceptable," the ministry said Monday in a statement explaining the revisions.Members of the public are invited to make submissions on the draft revision to the ministry via fax and email before Sept. 12.The ministry said earlier this month iodized salt was still essential in China as benefits of it still outweighed the negatives, citing the results of a nationwide risk assessment on iodine intake.The assessment was carried out in response to claims by media and medical experts that people in some regions, coastal areas in particular, were taking in excessive amounts of iodine.Since 1996, iodine has been added in salt across the country because in most parts of the country, the average diet is iodine deficient.Both iodine deficiency and excessive intake can lead to thyroid diseases.

NANNING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Six people were killed and eleven others injured in an explosion at an illegal private firecracker factory in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, local police said Sunday.The blast hit the factory in a village in Lingshan County, Qinzhou City at about 6 p.m. Sunday, the police said. The cause of the explosion is being investigated.Two people were killed on the spot while four injured died in the hospital after treatments failed.Police said they have arrested a suspect surnamed Lao.Authorities have ordered a city-wide crackdown on unlicensed firecracker factories following the incident.

BEIJING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Food poisoning in China killed 56 and sickened 2,452 others between January and May this year, the Ministry of Health said here Wednesday.In a report posted on its website, the ministry said 27 people, about half of the deaths, were killed by food poisoning at home.The deaths were mainly caused by the consumption of poisonous vegetables and pesticide- or poison-contaminated food.There were 68 cases of food poisoning at employee and student cafeterias nationwide in the five months resulting in the poisoning of almost 1,650 people and the deaths of 18. Bacteria-induced food poisoning and improperly cooked kidney beans were the main causes.Seven people were killed by excessive intakes of nitrite, a substance with an appearance similar to salt which can be used as a meat preservatives.The report urged food manufacturers to ensure food safety in accordance with law and called on the public to raise food safety self-awareness levels.
