SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Surveillance video captured the moment after a thief stole a woman's wallet inside a Midway District grocery store.According to San Diego Crime Stoppers, the theft happened on Sept. 23 inside the Ralph’s grocery store located at 3345 Sports Arena Blvd.While the 73-year-old female victim was in the freezer section, the man waited for the victim to open a freezer door and then approached her shopping cart. The suspect quickly removed the victim's wallet from her purse, which was placed at the top of the shopping cart.The victim was right next to the cart but was looking inside a freezer when the theft occurred.The suspected thief walked away without the victim realizing what had happened. The total loss of the wallet and cash inside it is over ,500.Investigators reviewed store surveillance footage, which showed the man following the victim throughout the store and appearing to target her.The suspected thief is described as a white male, approximately 5’10“ tall, 175 lbs., with tanned skin. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The driver of the McLaren sports car involved in a fiery fatal crash on Interstate 805 Thursday and the mother and daughter who died have been identified.Trevor Heitmann, 18, was behind the wheel of the 2014 sports car that collided with an SUV, killing himself, and a 43-year-old woman and her 12-year-old daughter, according to the San Diego Medical Examiner. The mother and daughter were identified by a relative as Aileen and Aryana Pizarro. The medical examiner is using an alternative means to identify the bodies because of how badly they were burned, according to the California Highway Patrol.Heitmann was traveling at a high rate of speed heading southbound in a northbound HOV lane at about 4:30 p.m. near La Jolla Village Dr. before the collision, CHP said. Troopers believe he entered via an HOV lane access at Carol Canyon Rd.RELATED: 12-year-old among victims in fiery wrong-way crash on I-805The two vehicles collided and exploded into flames, witnesses told 10News, causing a chain reaction of crashes with at least five other vehicles.Heitmann was killed of blunt force trauma and pronounced dead at the scene, the medical examiner reported.The mother and daughter in the SUV died due to the fire which engulfed the vehicle after the crash, the report said.It's still not clear why Heitmann was traveling at such a high rate of speed in the wrong direction. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The big concern for many health care workers during the coronavirus pandemic is their protective gear. “It's a scary time with not knowing exactly what's coming at us,” said Jay O’Brien, a local nurse and a representative for the Sharp nurses’ union.“A lot of nurses are very concerned that we don't have the proper equipment. The biggest concern is the lack of N95 masks,” O’Brien said. The masks block at least 95 percent of airborne particles, but there is now a shortage due to the pandemic.Nurses at UC San Diego said they had been wearing N95 masks when interacting with a suspected COVID-19 patient, but the Centers for Disease Control has loosened their guidelines. Now, they are used only during more complicated procedures, such as intubations.UCSD nurse Tiffani Zalinski wrote over the weekend on Facebook that the N95 respirators were "confiscated by the administration and were being distributed on a case-by-case basis." She was upset over the change, saying she works with patients "fresh out of surgery" and the N95 respirator were “the only thing that is going to protect" her. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Confederate monument at the center of an emotional debate has been removed from inside a city-owned cemetery in San Diego."It's a relief. I'm glad," said Amanda Bergara.Amid the recent protests aimed at racial injustice, Bergara was one of nearly 2,800 people to sign an online petition calling on San Diego's mayor to take down a confederate monument from inside Mount Hope Cemetery."It's a symbol of hate and disrespect for those who fought with their lives to end slavery," said Bergara.RELATED: Online petition seeks removal of Confederate memorial in San Diego cemeteryBuried in the cemetery are both Union and Confederate soldiers, who later lived in San Diego. The memorial, erected in 1948, names General Stonewall Jackson. In June, ABC 10News discovered the stone on the monument heavily damaged, with vandalism an ongoing issue. Unlike other Confederate markers removed in San Diego, the plot on which the monument sits is privately owned, and the city has maintained its hands are tied. The owner, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and supporters have said such markers are monuments to history.In the end, a city spokesperson says it was removed weeks ago at the request of the Confederate group, presumably to protect it from vandals. The monument is being stored by the city."Hopefully ending the hurt and pain for those who would have seen it and felt that hurt and pain. I hope it never sees the light of day," said Bergara.Not all the hurt is gone. A flagpole remains, along with a marker that includes the name, Stonewall Jackson.
