SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Fourth of July is traditionally a fun-filled weekend for locals to enjoy delicious food and take in a fireworks show. And while the pandemic has put some limits on that, there are still ways to have fun safely.El Cajon and Poway are hosting fireworks displays and encouraging residents to practice social distancing by staying in their car or watching the show from a distance.The Del Mar Fairgrounds also continues to host delicious fair food weekends with Chicken Charlies, Roxy's, and many more delectable treats — all from the comfort of your car drive-thru style.Balboa Park is also reopening several museums with guidelines in place to keep visitors safe.(As a reminder, residents are encouraged to stay home if they feel ill and avoid large gatherings with people not from the same household. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The escalation in Iran is stirring up terrifying memories for the family of a San Diego man, held there for more than a year during one of the most intense hostage standoffs in history."I was trying to get information. All I had heard from the State Department was that the embassy had been overrun," said Dotty Morefield, whose husband, Richard, was one of 52 people taken hostage in Iran in November 1979. "I picked up the phone and thought if anyone was going to know it would be the news agency, and Brad picked up."It's been more than 40 years since Morefield picked up the phone and called 10News for the first time. 10News assignment editor Brad McLellan picked up the phone."Mrs. Morefield told me her husband had just been taken hostage in Iran and I was shocked. I didn't know what to say," McLellan recalls. For more than 400 days after that, it became her mission to keep her husband's name relevant."It's a kind of fear where you can't function, you're just sitting by the phone waiting," Morefield said. "I have to face the fears. The uncertainties and the worries. It kept me very busy and it kept me informed."Day in and day out, Morefield made sure the hostages were kept in the spotlight. Finally after 444 days, the hostages were released."I was just I was beyond excited," Morefield said. And here, Morefield and her kids — and a sea of supporters — celebrated her husband's return."He was stunned," Morefield said. "There were people from Lindbergh Field to the townhouse I was renting in Tierrasanta. Never," Morefield said. "He would wake up afraid, startled. He hated to have a door shut."Morefield now lives in North Carolina. Her lawyer says each hostage was promised .4 million, or 0,000 for a spouse or child, but to this day they're still waiting. He said so far the hostages have only been awarded about 16 percent of the amount they were promised."I don't understand the hold up," Morefield says. 2577

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The countdown has begun for St. Patrick's Day in San Diego. The Gaslamp District is heavily bedazzled with sparkly green decorations. Many people said they are ready to party.Niamh Thornton is a 24 year old Irish student, now living in San Diego. “Niamh is pronounced like “Christmas Eve,” but with an “N” like “Neev”… It’s Irish,” Thornton said.She has been working at the Field Irish Pub in the Gaslamp District since last June."It's called an Irish Mule… It's lovely,” she said, pointing at a popular drink at the pub.The Irish native was getting ready for a 10-hour shift at the Field Saturday. "It's going to be crazy, I'd say,” Thornton said. Crazy may be an understatement.Saturday, many blocks downtown will be closed from sunrise to sunset-- for the morning Shamrock Run, the daytime parade, and shamROCK, the evening concert. Plus, many will be staring at the television screens, screaming for their favorite Irish teams. “England vs. Ireland in the rugby,” she said. ”And six nations. That’s insane. So this place is going to be packed.”But some people just could not wait to pre-party. Many people we saw in Downtown were showcasing their green accessories and outfits. Some were fully dressed up as lucky leprechauns. Kristin Ventura was showing off her Irish American pride with her co-workers at the Field Irish Pub. She said it is the one day of the year that anyone can be an honorary Irishman."Everyone is a little bit Irish,” Ventura said. “Deep down inside, there is that little spunk in you."Thornton said that spunk comes from St. Patrick himself, who legend said, saved the island from a slithery invasion."He got rid of snakes in Ireland,” Thornton said. “So that's why there are no snakes in Ireland."That was the start of the St. Patrick’s Day celebration for everyone — even for those on the other side of the planet. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The Coast Guard Tuesday rescued a 62-year-old man from a fishing boat 72 miles off the coast of San Diego.The crew of the 95-foot boat, called the ‘Oceanside 95,” called the Coast Guard around 11:30 a.m. requesting assistance for a passenger experiencing symptoms of a stroke.Crews arrived on scene around 2:45 p.m. and were able to hoist the man into the Jayhawk helicopter when he was taken to the hospital.The man is said to be in stable condition. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Coronado Police Department released an image Monday of a vehicle that may be related to BB gun incidents in Coronado Sunday. 10news has learned five people were struck in the downtown area. Police spent the morning scouring the ground near State Street and West Broadway. An officer told 10news four people were crossing State Street late Saturday night or early Sunday evening when three of them were hit. The extent of their injuries are unknown. At the corner of L Street and Sixth Avenue in the East Village, a woman was shot in the arm early Sunday morning, according to San Diego Police. She was walking in a small group and one of the men was an exhibitor at Comic Con, staying at the Omni Hotel, where they were headed before the shooting. The early morning shooting was not the only one that occurred overnight. In National City and Paradise Hills, at least a dozen cars were hit, and in Coronado, police said at least 23 businesses, homes an cars were struck by BBs.10news brought the image of a white sedan released by Coronado Police to Roman Beck, who has worked as an accident reconstruction expert for two decades."I believe it's a 2005 to 2010 Chrysler 300 sedan.
