Right now, nearly 2 million people are living with limb loss in the United States. But new technology is bringing hope, with a prosthetic that responds to what a person is thinking. Whether it's picking out socks or picking up LEGO blocks, Mario Gasbarro seems to be doing it all just fine, using what his kids affectionately call his “robot arm.” “They seem to enjoy it more than my old arm,” Gasbarro jokes. At just 34 years old, Gasbarro’s doctors told him the lump that had been growing on his elbow was a malignant tumor. As it grew, his doctors determined amputation was his best option. “I don't need my left arm to be able to love my kids and love my wife and to be there for them, so that was always a priority,” Gasbarro says. Now, he’s living with this prosthesis, which moves based on how he thinks and moves his muscles. “I want to open my hand. I think, ‘OK, open my hand and move the muscles to open my hand,’ and I just need to replicate that muscle movement each time I want to try to open my hand,” Gasbarro says.Dr. David Schnur with Presbyterian/ St. Luke’s Medical Center worked with Gasbarro through the process. “Instead of the patient learning the prosthesis, the prosthesis really learns the patient,” Dr. Schnur describes of the prosthetic arm. Through a process called targeted muscle reinnervation, Dr. Schnur attached the nerves from Gasbarro’s forearm that power the hand to muscles in his elbow. “And then what happens is when Mario thinks about closing his hand, instead of causing a muscle to fire down his forearm, it causes a muscle to fire up in his in his biceps,” Dr. Schnur describes. Those signals are then picked up by his prothesis through pattern recognition. “He contracts the muscles. That makes sense for him to close the hand and the computer on the prostheses picks that up and is then able to convert that specific signal into a hand closed,” Dr. Schnur says. Gasbarro says it's not second nature just yet, but he's getting there with practice.“I’ve never felt limited, or like, I’m not able to do anything,” Gasbarro says. 2084

Summer is in full swing, and with the warmer months comes the mosquitoes. Not only are the small insects pesky, they are considered the deadliest animal in the world, believe it or not. More than 700 million people around the globe get sick from mosquito bites, and more than 700,000 people die from those bites each year."We always see West Nile Virus peaks right after the Fourth of July weekend, because people have been outside and not protecting themselves," says Kylee Grenis, an expert on mosquitoes. Grenis helped us conduct an experiment to find out which bug repellent works the best.We purchased three mosquito traps. We sprayed one trap with DEET. The other with a top rated non-DEET spray called Skin So Soft by Avon. The third trap was a controlled trap with no spray. The traps were hung next to dry ice in a mosquito-infested park."We are going to hang some dry ice near those traps to simulate a human standing and breathing and hopefully that will help attract more mosquitoes to our traps," explains Grenis on the use of dry ice. After an hour, the trap sprayed with DEET had one mosquito. In the Avon-sprayed trap, there were no mosquitos. In the control trap, there were six mosquitos. The sprays kept the mosquitos away.As far as sprays go, Grenis says she still prefers DEET. "It is great at making you invisible to mosquitoes,” she says. “That blocks the receptors so that they can't detect your carbon dioxide signature." But, many consumers fear products with DEET are not safe. "I think a lot of the time people get it confused with DDT,” she explains of Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), a chemical compound banned in many countries due to the danger it poses to wildlife and the environment.DEET is safe to use and just like the Avon spray, and both sprays are effective in keeping mosquitos away during the summer time months. 1872

Space is an incredible subject to study, and it wouldn’t be possible without the collection of Moon rocks and dust, as well as information about the Universe scientists have gathered. In building 31 north at the Johnson Space Center, NASA’s Lunar Lab houses some of the most famous rocks from all the Apollo missions. They have over 100,000 rocks from space.Charis Krysher, a Lunar Curation Processor for NASA, says moon rocks and space dust are the most important thing brought back to Earth.“One of the first things that we learned from the Apollo collection was how old the moon the Earth was,” Krysher says.Rocks on Earth aren’t pristine like they are on the Moon. Moon rocks don’t age, because there is no atmosphere in space to break down the rocks. The rocks found on the moon can potentially be billions of years old. “More recently we've actually learned in the past, less than a decade, that the Moon's rocks actually contain way more water than was originally realized,” the processor explains. Just like famous diamonds and jewels, there are well known space rocks, too. Like the one found by Apollo 15. “They named it the Genesis Rock, because it’s a part of the primordial crust of the moon,” she says. When studying these samples, scientists take all the precautions, from wearing bunny suits, temperature-controlled rooms and even triple bagging each rock for storing."We try really hard to preserve the rocks so that the science that we learn from the rocks can be trusted," Krysher says. It’s not every day we go to the Moon, so these scientists take time to study the rocks and do it sparingly. They are still breaking rocks over 40 years old. However, come five years from now, they’ll get another chance for more rocks when U.S. astronauts head to the moon in 2024. 1796
