BEIJING, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States Monday underscored their close economic relationship and called for its healthy growth."China and the United States share very close economic ties," Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan told a U.S. delegation led by two Missouri senators - Christopher Bond and Claire McCaskill.Wang said bilateral cooperation in trade, economy, investment and finance generate substantial benefits for both peoples."Both sides should work together to create a sound environment for a positive, cooperative and comprehensive China-U.S. relationship in the 21st century," Wang said.Bond and McCaskill echoed Wang's comments, calling on the two countries to oppose trade protectionism.On global economy, Wang said the recovery of the global economy would be bumpy."All countries are confronted with the common challenge of seeking robust, sustainable and balanced economic growth."Wang also said the Chinese government would "make efforts to strike a balance between maintaining steady and fast economic growth with the restructuring of the economy and the curbing of inflation."The two senators are leading a delegation of nearly 20 leaders from a variety of Missouri businesses, trade unions and universities.During their stay in Beijing, the delegation will meet with officials from the commerce, foreign affairs, civil aviation and agriculture departments.They will also travel to Shanghai on east China's seaboard, where they will call on local officials and tour the ongoing World Expo.

BEIJING, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Xie Yun, a 24-year-old new graduate, felt excited when he opened the door of the 50-square-meter apartment he rented in Changzhou city of east China's Jiangsu Province.Starting work in a computer company in July, Xie is one of the lucky few who enjoyed lower rents offered as part of the local government's affordable housing program. He pays 4.5 yuan per square meter for one month, around 10 percent of his monthly income.Also, the apartment is equipped with an air conditioner, a TV set and automatic drying racks."I'm quite satisfied, and I prefer to rent such an apartment rather than buy one," said Xie.Xie's home is one of 133 small-sized public-rent apartments purchased by the Changzhou government and rented to low-income families and the newly employed. BEIJING, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's meteorological authority raised the level of alert for Typhoon Fanapi to the second highest on Sunday as it nears the country's south coast.Fanapi, the 11th typhoon to hit China this year, will move westward at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour, and make landfall between Monday morning and noon at the coast between Guangdong and Fujian provinces, the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) said.The shipping route linking Xiamen in Fujian Province, and Jinmen, in Taiwan, was closed Sunday with Fanapi approaching, said local authorities.CMA urged local authorities to make full preparations to guard against the strongest typhoon this year.Zhu Xiaoxiang, an expert with CMA, expected Fanapi to subside somewhat shortly after making landfall, and heavy rains were unlikely during the upcoming Chinese traditional mid-autumn festival, which will fall on September 22 this year.

XIAMEN, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- China will continue to attract large influxes of foreign investment in the next few years despite uncertainties in the global economic recovery, Commerce Minister Chen Deming said Tuesday.Although uncertainties lie in the process of the global economic recovery and the development trend of the world economy would, to some extent, affect foreign investment in China, the next few years will still be a high-tide period for foreign investment inflow into the country, Chen said Tuesday at a ministerial conference at the 2nd World Investment Forum (WIF) in Xiamen City in southeast China's Fujian Province."Currently, many countries and organizations have rated China as the most appealing destination for investment, which probably would not be changed for a few years," said the minister.Foreign direct investment (FDI) this year is set to "surpass 100 billion U.S. dollars," compared to 90 billion dollars last year, an official with the ministry predicted on Sunday.During the first seven months of this year, China's FDI increased 20.65 percent year on year to 58.35 billion dollars, according to the ministry' s latest statistics.Meanwhile, some 14,459 foreign-invested companies were established in China in the first seven months, up 17.9 percent year on year.
