PYONGYANG, May 9 (Xinhua) -- The Rodong Sinmun, a leading newspaper of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), hailed the recent successful visit to China by top leader Kim Jong Il in an editorial published Sunday.The editorial said that the people of the DPRK are "very glad and excited" about the visit. It is a "meaningful opportunity" to strengthen the friendship between the two parties and the leaders of the two countries.The article also indicated that the DPRK will make efforts to further strengthen the traditional DPRK-China friendship.Both countries shared the view that peace, stability and prosperity of the Korean Peninsula are in the common interests of the two countries and other Northeastern Asian nations, the editorial said.The two sides will make joint efforts to achieve the objective of denuclearizing the Peninsula on the basis of the Sept. 19 Joint Statement, it added.The editorial also said that the people of the DPRK sincerely wish the Chinese people still greater achievements in their socialist construction and the cause for national reunification.Kim Jong Il made an unofficial visit to China from May 3 to 7. URUMQI, May 29 (Xinhua) -- China would spend 120 to 150 billion yuan (17.6 to 22 billion U.S. dollars) on transport infrastructure in its far-western Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region over the next five years, the regional government said Saturday.The money will be used to build new roads and renovate old ones to support Xinjiang's "leapfrog development" promised by the central government earlier this month, according to a statement issued after a conference of the Ministry of Transport and Xinjiang's regional government.The paved roads to be built or renovated will reach 75,000 to 80,000 kilometers in the region where there were just 15,000 kilometers of paved roads in place by the end of last year, said Song Airong, a regional Party official.Xinjiang's current 838 kilometers of highways will also be extended to 4,000 kilometers over the next five years, he said.The central government unveiled a policy package last Thursday to support the development of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, setting a goal that the region should undergo a spurt in development so that by 2015 its per capita gross domestic product could reach the national average.Under the package, fixed asset investment in Xinjiang in the next five years will be more than double the amount in the current five-year plan that ends this year.

BEIJING, May 10 (Xinhua) -- China's Health Ministry on Monday vowed to ban smoking in all its offices in four months, part of an arduous campaign to curb public smoking around the country.Yang Qing, director with the ministry's community health department, told reporters that hospitals, clinics and other medical institutes nationwide should follow suit to impose strict smoking ban by 2011."No Smoking" signs will be placed in the ministry's conference rooms, lavatories, car parks and stairways while a designated smoking area will be set up outside the office building, the official said.He said the ministry also bans its employees from giving tobacco as gifts -- a rooted tradition in China's office culture. Employees who break the ban will be punished, while those who quit smoking in a year can expect cash rewards.Though Yang did not elaborate how hospitals and clinics under the ministry's supervision should go tobacco-free, it is widely believed that similar policies will be imposed soon among the country's medical institutes.Data from the ministry show China has more than 350 million smokers, mostly men influenced by a macho culture. Doctors with smoking habit have become a prime target of China's tobacco control campaign.Yang said smoking should be banned in all public venues, workplaces and public transport vehicles by 2011, according to the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, which took effect in 2005.It was signed by the Chinese government in 2003 and ratified by the country's top legislature in 2005. National and local governments ramped up anti-smoking campaigns in recent years, but these were not effective as expected because no strict laws are in place, observers said.Yang said the ministry is now coordinating with the country's lawmakers to push for such legislation.
