One of the former Minneapolis police officers charged in the death of George Floyd is requesting charges against him to be dismissed. The lawyers for Derek Chauvin reportedly filed a motion to dismiss the second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter charges against their client.Meanwhile, prosecutors are seeking stiffer sentences for all four men charged in Floyd’s murder. In documents filed Friday, prosecutors noted that Floyd was vulnerable and treated with particular cruelty. Two of the officers--J. Kueng, Thomas Lane and Tou Thao-- are charged with aiding and abetting both second-degree murder and manslaughter.A judge has the discretion to order up to 15 years on the murder counts under the state’s sentencing guidelines. The maximum sentence for second-degree murder is 40 years. The death of George Floyd sparked protests across the nation and around the world against police brutality and systemic racism. 954

October's market turmoil took an off-day Tuesday. The Dow soared 300 points, the Nasdaq was up 1% and the broader S&P 500 rose 1.1%. Investors were relieved to hear President Donald Trump comment Tuesday that he is willing to negotiate with China on a trade pact.Markets tumbled Monday on fears that the Trump administration could impose a new round of Tariffs on China. Some experts warn that the bull market is peaking. Big tech stocks are plunging as earnings growth has slowed, interest rates have risen and the threat of a longer China trade war has intensified. The S&P 500 fell 8% lower this month. But Brian Belski, chief investment strategist for BMO Capital Markets, thinks there are many years left before things turn around. 749

O'FALLON, Mo. — Teachers in at least three states have died after bouts with the coronavirus since the dawn of the new school year.A teachers’ union leader worries that the return to in-person classes will have a deadly impact across the U.S. if proper precautions aren’t taken.AshLee DeMarinis was just 34 when she died Sunday. She taught social skills and special education in in eastern Missouri's Potosi School District.DeMarinis battled COVID-19 in the hospital for three weeks before her death. She became ill last month before kids returned to class, but had been to her classroom preparing for the school year, he sister said.A third- grade teacher named Demetria Bannister also died from the virus in South Carolina on Monday, after being diagnosed on Friday. She was just 28 years old.Bannister had taught at Windsor Elementary School in Columbia for five years, CNN reports. The school district says she was last seen at her school on August 28. She began the school year three days later, teaching her students virtually from home. And two other educators died recently in Mississippi. Tom Slade was one of the teachers who passed away. He died Sunday, according to Vancleave High School, where he taught.“He was a true representation of a Vancleave Bulldog and we will forever miss his wisdom, wittiness, love for all students, and love for his school family,” the school wrote in a Facebook post. “We love you, Mr. Slade, and are so thankful for your impact on our school and community.”It’s unclear how many teachers in the U.S. have become ill with the coronavirus since the new school year began. As for the children these educators are teaching, around 500,000 kids have contracted the coronavirus since the start of the pandemic, according to a recent report from the American Academy of Pediatrics. 1824

One of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School's most visible student activists will postpone his first year of college to devote time to political causes.David Hogg has been accepted at the University of California, Irvine, "But he will not be going to college this year because he's decided to take a year off and work on the midterm elections," his mother, Rebecca Boldrick, told CNN Monday. She said her son hopes to register and educate new voters and to "get people to vote."Hogg, 17, is a senior at the Parkland, Florida, school where 17 people were fatally shot in February. Since then, he has emerged as a high-profile advocate for gun control measures, speaking at the March for Our Lives rally in Washington, being interviewed on TV and appearing on the cover of Time magazine.Hogg's college aspirations made national headlines last month when Fox News host Laura Ingraham mocked him on Twitter over a report that he had been rejected by at least three universities to which he had applied. (He was accepted by several others.)She later apologized after Hogg urged his 700,000-plus Twitter followers to pressure companies to stop advertising on Ingraham's show.Hogg has told CNN and other media outlets that he is interested in pursuing a career in journalism or filmmaking. 1329
