Bird populations in the United States and Canada have dropped by 29% since 1970, signifying 2.9 billion birds lost in almost 50 years, according to a new study.The scientists involved in the study warn that like a canary in a coalmine, birds reveal environmental health. This steep loss of bird populations, including some of the most common birds like sparrows and finches, shows that human impacts on the continent's environment mean it can no longer support the wildlife systems it once did.Normally, it's hard to track animal populations this way. But birds are much easier to monitor. The study combines almost 50 years of data, including information collected by citizen scientists and weather radar data of migratory birds from 143 stations across North America. Observations by people were shared with the North American Breeding Bird Survey at the US Geological Survey, the Canadian Wildlife Service, the Audubon Christmas Bird Count and Manomet's International Shorebird Survey."Citizen-science participants contributed critical scientific data to show the international scale of losses of birds," said John Sauer, study co-author at the US Geological Survey. Atlanta’s mayor says two police officers have been fired and three placed on desk duty pending review over excessive use of force during a protest incident Saturday night.Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said at a news conference Sunday that she and police Chief Erika Shields made the decision after reviewing body-camera footage. Shields called it “really shocking to watch.”Officials say the incident came to light via video that circulated online.It shows a group of police officers in riot gear and gas masks surround a car being driven by a man with a woman in the passenger seat. The officers pull the woman out and appear to use a stun gun on the man. They use zip-tie handcuffs on the woman on the ground. The couple did not appear to be fighting police on the video.Bottoms said charges have been dropped against the woman, and the man has been released.Local reporters, who captured footage of the incident, said the police had earlier broken the glass on the car. Becky Ianni is still haunted by years of sexual abuse that happened at the hands of her priest when she was a young child."I had buried my head, because he told me I'd go to Hell if I told on him," Ianni said about the priest. "This was my darkest secret."After coming forward, it took a year-and-a-half for church leaders to agree to a settlement, she said.Last week, Pope Francis issued a new church law that requires all Catholic priests and nuns to report clergy sexual abuse and cover-ups to church authorities. Churches have until mid-2020 to comply with setting up a reporting system. The new law does not require them to report to police, as victims such as Becky have demanded. Previously, such reporting was left up to the conscience of individual priests and nuns. "Nuns and priests are now mandatory reporters? Well, reporters to who? Religious authorities, not to police, " Ianni said. Every suspected child abuse case should be turned directly to police. They're the ones who can independently investigate it."The Vatican has argued legal systems in different countries make a universal reporting law impossible, and that imposing one could endanger the church in places where Catholics are a persecuted minority.After decades of sexual abuse scandals, critics point out there is no punishment for priensts and none who choose not to report cases of abuse.Jeff Anderson, an attorney for other victims of church sex abuse cases, calls the new law ineffective."They have demonstrated for over three decades they are incapable of handling this issue themselves and they do not want outsiders in the closed clerical culture," Anderson said. The rules also says victims can't be forced to keep quiet and must be welcomed and listened to by church leaders ... and offered medical and psychological assistance.The new law starts in June and can be changed after a three-year trial run. 1904

Another strong storm system has caused possible tornadoes to form from Oklahoma all the way to the East Coast on Tuesday, one day after parts of Indiana and Ohio were devastated by a tornado outbreak. Near Lawrence, Kansas, damaging winds from a possible tornado caused damage to a number of structures. Lawrence police tweeted that officers did not see "major structural damage" within city limits but that large trees, power lines and debris were strewn along roads on the southeastern edge of the city.
