FORT WORTH, Texas — A Texas grand jury decided Monday to take no action against a man who fatally shot an armed man who killed two people in late December at a Fort Worth-area church.Jack Wilson is a firearms instructor who trained the volunteer security team at the West Freeway Church of Christ in White Settlement, Texas.He fatally shot Keith Thomas Kinnunen during a Dec. 29 service after he shot another security volunteer and a communion server.The gunman was heading to the front of the sanctuary when Wilson fired a single fatal shot. KXAS-TV in Dallas reports that there were about 250 people in the church at the time of the shooting.“Texas law allows an individual, when they witness somebody placing others at risk of serious bodily injury or death, to act with deadly force to protect the other individuals,” said Tim Rodgers, chief prosecutor for the Law Enforcement Incident team in the Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney’s Office. “Mr. Wilson did just that. He did it responsibly and, as a result, he was justified under the law in his actions.”According to NPR, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott awarded Wilson the Governor's Medal of Courtage in January following the shooting.The Forth Worth Star-Telegram reports that it is common for a grand jury to review a homicide to determine if criminal charges are warranted. 1340

Former Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, who was previously fired by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, announced on Wednesday that he intends to run against Emanuel to be the city's mayor.The election will be held in February 2019. McCarthy was fired in December 2015 after it took the department 14 months to release video of the death of Laquan McDonald, who was an unarmed black 17-year-old shot and killed by Chicago Officer Jason Van Dyke. It was determined that Van Dyke had shot McDonald 16 times, leading to protests in Chicago. The case led the City of Chicago to offer a million settlement to the McDonald family, the Chicago Tribune reported. Van Dyke, who has since been charged with homicide, is still awaiting trial. McCarthy told the Tribune that he is running as a "conservative Democrat." “Between the taxes, our economy, the schools and the crime rate here, we’re a laughingstock in America,” McCarthy told the Tribune. “The prevailing thought about Chicago is we’re on our way down in all those areas, and they all infect each other, and nobody seems to get that. It’s almost like a ‘Wake up, Chicago’ moment.”McCarthy is going up against a relatively popular mayor. According to a poll by Anzalone Liszt Grove Research, Emanuel's approval rating as of January was 51 percent, compared to 40 percent who disapproved. Emanuel is seeking his third term after being President Barack Obama's first Chief of Staff in the White House. While McCarthy has made it clear that he is not running as revenge against Emanuel, he contends his firing was unjust."While I am very emotional, that’s not my motivation here,” he told the Tribune. “Why would I possibly take on turning around one of the largest American cities in the right direction? Because I’m annoyed? No. I’m doing it out of a sense of obligation as a public servant and that’s what motivates me.”He added that homicide levels dropped to their lowest levels since the 1960s while he was superintendent, but Emanuel's treatment toward police has played a factor in the city's rising homicide count.  2151

For the third time in a week, a suspicious package has been addressed to CNN. This time, on Monday morning, the package was intercepted in Atlanta, the home to CNN's worldwide headquarters.The package "was intercepted at an Atlanta post office," CNN President Jeff Zucker said in a memo to staffers. "There is no imminent danger to the CNN Center."The Atlanta Police Department said Monday morning that they responded to a call at 9:38 AM about a suspicious package at a post office near the CNN Center. The package appears identical to the other packages authorities say were sent by pipe bomb suspect Cesar Sayoc, who was arrested on Friday.The other two packages addressed to CNN were apparent mail bombs. The first package arrived Wednesday morning in the mailroom at Time Warner Center, home to CNN's New York offices. It spurred a five and a half hour long evacuation of the building.That package was addressed to former CIA director John Brennan, who actually works for NBC.The second package was addressed to both CNN contributor James Clapper, the former director of National Intelligence, and CNN. It was found Friday morning at a post office six blocks away. It wasaddressed to Time Warner Center.There was no immediate word from authorities on Monday about whether the suspicious package in Atlanta is linked to last week's wave of mail bombs.Among the other recipients were former President Barack Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former US Attorney General Eric Holder, California Senator Kamala Harris, New Jersey Senator Cory Booker and California Rep. Four people were killed and several others were wounded when a gunman opened fire in a Waffle House in Antioch, Tennessee.The mass shooting happened around 3:25 a.m. Sunday at 3571 Murfreesboro Pike near Hobson Pike.Metro Nashville Police Department officials named 29-year-old Travis Reinking, from Illinois, as a person of interest in the shooting, saying the vehicle the gunman used was registered to him.He has since been added to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation's Top 10 Most Wanted list. Reports from the TBI described him as standing around 6'4'' tall and weighing approximately 180 pounds. He should be considered armed and dangerous.A ,500 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest. Police said Reinking drove his pickup truck into the Waffle House parking lot around 3:18 a.m.. He sat in the truck for a few minutes before getting out and immediately shooting and killing two people outside of the restaurant with an AR-15 rifle.Officers said he then went inside and shot and killed another victim.Those three victims have been identified. Taurean C. Sanderlin, age 29 of Goodlettsville. He was an employee of the restaurant who was killed as he stood outside. Also killed outside was 20-year-old Joe R. Perez, of Nashville, who was a patron of the restaurant.The third death at the scene was 21-year-old Deebony Groves, of Gallatin. She was killed inside the restaurant.Police confirmed 23-year-old Akilah Dasilva, of Antioch, passed away at Vanderbilt University Medical Center after being injured inside the restaurant. A friend confirmed to NewsChannel 5 that Dasilva was a local musician who went by the nickname "Natrix."Two other victims were wounded by gunfire. They have been identified as 21-year-old Shanita Waggoner, of Nashville, and 24-year-old Sharita Hnderson, of Antioch.When the gunshots rang out, a patron ran to the restrooms. He was watching the gunman and rushed at him when he saw the gunman look down and fidget with the gun.The 29-year-old male patron wrestled the AR-15 away from the gunman. The patron suffered an elbow injury and other abrasions. He was taken to TriStar Southern Hills Medical Center and has since been released.Police said six of the eight people injured were shot.Witnesses said he was nude wearing only a green jacket and got away on foot after the patron took him down.  2424
