Two businesses decided to close their doors for a day in reaction to white supremacist Richard Spencer’s speech at Michigan State University. The Carpathia Club in Sterling Heights, Michigan said it got a call from Attorney Kyle Bristow. He wanted to book a meeting on Sunday at the club for about 100 people.  “It was a law firm having a meet and greet. I didn’t think anything negative about it,” said Carsten Grotioh of the Carpathian Club.  “Then Sterling Heights Police came in and asked to speak to management.  They told me they heard there was going to be a Neo-Nazi gathering here on Sunday.”Grotioh learned that Bristow had represented Spencer as a lawyer, and the meeting was supposed to include Spencer’s supporters. He didn’t just cancel the reservation. He closed his business for the day. The owner of the Tipsy McStagger Pub in Warren said he had a similar experience. He got a call from Bristow’s Foundation for the Market Place of Ideas. He was told the organization wanted to host a networking meeting on Monday. When someone came into his business and informed him the networking involved people who supported a white nationalist, he says he was disgusted. “I said absolutely not are they coming to our bar. I mean, we are a neighborhood bar. I have been in this community 50 years. I retired from the Warren Police Department. I have seen enough hate. Our bar is what it is. It is a neighborhood bar. Everyone is welcome,” said John Vostoris, the owner of Tipsy McStagger Pub. Vostoris also decided to close his business to avoid any gathering there by people who planned to attend the event. The Anti Defamation League says standing up to hate, while not infringing on free speech is exactly what everyone needs to do.“It is not something we want to see in our state,” said Heidi Budaj, the ADL’s Michigan Regional Director. She says the fear is hate speech leads to action.  Nationwide there was a 57% increase in anti-Semitic incidents from 2016 to 2017. In Michigan, there was a 13% increase overall. “We want our state to be known as a welcoming place that embraces diversity. A place where we stand up against hate,” said Budaj. Scripps station WXYZ in Detroit reached out to the leader of the Foundation for the Market Place and asked if they rescheduled their meeting. Bristow said he suddenly resigned from the group because of the media’s vilification of him and his message.  2520

Two SWAT team members in Florida have reportedly been suspended for choosing to respond, without permission, to a shooting at a high school in Florida where 17 people tragically lost their lives.According to the Florida Sun-Sentinel, two Miramar, Florida, SWAT team members were on duty, in the area at the time of the shooting. The SWAT officers chose to respond to the school, despite not having been told to. According to the Miramar Police Department, their decision, "created an officer safety issue and left them unaccountable for their actions," the Sun-Sentinel reports. Detective Jeffrey Gilbert and Detective Carl Schlosser were notified of their suspension on February 22, the newspaper reports. They were instructed to turn in their SWAT-issued rifles immediately. The two reportedly remain on active duty for their other assignments.Union officials are defending the actions of the SWAT officers, saying that they were following their natural instincts to help those in need when they responded to the school. “While it may have been a violation of policy to not notify their supervisors that they were going there, their intentions were brave and heroic, I think,” Police Benevolent Association President Jeff Marano told the Sun-Sentinel.On Wednesday, a Florida grand jury has formally indicted Nikolas Cruz in the Parkland school shooting. UPDATE (July 27, 1 p.m.): The owner of missing 40-year-old tortoise Lou said her beloved pet was found safe and is back home.Jessica Comfort told ABC 10News that someone brought Lou to her front yard on Monday, but that person left before she could talk to them.Comfort said her tortoise did not have any visible injuries and is doing well.Comfort is working to schedule Lou a visit to the vet as soon as possible. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A woman in Santee desperately looking for her nearly 40-year-old tortoise says she's been able to rescue other reptiles during the search.The Texas and California tortoise mix, named Lou, weighs about 20 pounds and is slightly bigger than the size of a dinner plate. Jessica Comfort says he's been missing for two weeks."The night before he went missing, we had a water main break," says Comfort. "With the water shooting up over the roof, we had to get an emergency plumber and back some foliage, and we left the gate open, unfortunately."Comfort says she's been searching for the animal ever since. Signs have been posted around her Santee neighborhood and surrounding areas."The search has been wild and crazy," Comfort said.Lou hasn't shown up yet, but Comfort says she was able to rescue three other animals during her search. The animals included a small turtle, a Reed Foot tortoise that needed medical attention, and a Sulcata Tortoise named Rocky. Rocky will be reunited with his family very soon.Comfort has been working with the San Diego Turtle and Tortoise Society to ensure all of the found animals are safe. VICTORVILLE, Calif. - A 14-year-old boy conducted an false investigation in Victorville, California in an SUV with emergency lights and a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department uniform, investigators said.Deputies said the boy pulled the Ford Explorer with red and blue lights into the driveway of a home Monday about 6 p.m.The boy, who was wearing a uniform with a firearm in the belt holster, went to the front door and said he was there to investigate a domestic disturbance.The homeowner said there was no problem and no one at the home had called for help. According to deputies, the boy tried to open the door but the homeowner had locked it.
