DENVER — Being a school nurse is a lot more than bumps, bruises, bloody noses and band-aids. And now, with a shortage of nurses, school nurses are getting even more added to their workload.“I travel around from school to school,” said Brooke Goudy, a school nurse at Bromwell Elementary School in Denver. “I work one school, two days out of the week; another one, one day out of the week; and two days a week, I’m going around and evaluating school nurses. So I’m visiting maybe up to 10 schools a month.”For most of Goudy’s career, this has been her schedule. She’s not an outlier. A lot of school nurses have a hectic schedule. It’s a growing problem for them and the schools they serve.In 2018, more than 60 percent of schools across the country didn’t have a nurse on campus full time, according to the National Association of School Nurses.“Every day is extremely busy,” Goudy said.School nursing shortages have been a key point at teacher strikes in Chicago and Los Angeles this year. The Chicago walkout was settled when the district agreed to put a nurse on campus at all of the city’s schools, five days a week. That’s become rare in most states.“In the past I’ve been traveling to a different school nearly every day of the week,” Goudy said.The lack of nurses puts a strain on the students who need them.“There was times when my seizures were out of hand,” said Delvechio Jones, a recent high school graduate. “I had Nurse Lucy and the rest of the faculty and staff here to help me with them.”Jones said having a nurse helped him be in class, even when he didn’t want to be.“She was there for me when I needed her the most, and she helped me get through a lot of tough things,” he said.Lucy Roberts is a school nurse at the high school Jones graduated from. However, she’s not a full-time staff member there. “I work in this school three days a week,” she said. The rest of the time she’s at other schools in the district. The other two days, Manual High School goes without a nurse.When a nurse isn’t around, schools have turned to other solutions.Kelly Grenham has been with Children’s Hospital Colorado for decades. For almost two decades, she has been a school nurse consultant.While she trains school nurses, she also trains everyone else. “They’re the secretaries, the office clerks, the people that are in the office, the bus drivers,” Grenham said. “I’m training the people there to make sure every other day of the week that they are safe.”Full-time employees at schools have taken on some nurse responsibilities. Goudy has monthly meetings with full-time school staff members to go over plans to keep kids healthy.“Schools as a whole are trying to figure out how to get more school nurses,” Grenham said.“They need the money to be able to do that, and sometimes with their budget, they can’t,” Goudy said.About 76.7% of school nurses are funded by local education dollars, according to the National Association of School Nurses.“Community members understand the kind of impact that can be had with a school nurse in the building,” Roberts said. “Parents and community members can take action by telling principals, ‘Why don’t you have a nurse here?’ ”“The research does show if you have management of chronic health conditions, the visits to the emergency room go way down,” Grenham said.“Health comes first. CHICAGO – According to the USDA, the average head of lettuce travels 1,500 miles from harvest to plate. That transport leaves a heavy carbon footprint as flavors in the produce also begin to degrade. While many have looked to vertical farming as an Eco-friendly alternative, high costs have been a challenge.But inside a warehouse on Chicago’s south side, one entrepreneur hopes to unlock the secret to the future of farming.For the last three years Jake Counne, the founder and CEO of Backyard Fresh Farms, has been pilot testing vertical farming using the principles of manufacturing.“Being able to have the crop come to the farmer instead of the farmer going to the crop,” said Counne. “That translated into huge efficiencies because we can start treating this like a manufacturing process instead of a farming process.”It’s a high-tech approach – implementing artificial intelligence, cameras and robotics that help to yield leafy, organic greens of high quality, while reducing waste and the time it takes to harvest. Some have called it Old McDonald meets Henry Ford. Large pallets of vegetables are run down conveyor belts under LED lights.“The system will be cuing up trays to the harvester based on where the plants are in their life-cycle,” explains Counne.It’s the automation and assembly line he says that makes this vertical farming model unique. Artificial intelligence algorithms and cameras monitor the growth of the crops. Lead research and development scientist Jonathan Weekley explains how the cameras work. “They’re capturing live images, they’re doing live image analysis,” he said. “They’re also collecting energy use data so we can monitor how much energy our lights are using.”“So, what essentially happens is the plant itself is becoming the sensor that controls its own environment,” Counne added. Another factor that makes the process different is scaleability. Right now, Backyard Fresh Farms can grow 100 different varieties of vegetables with an eye on expansion.“There’s really no end to type of varieties we can grow and specifically in the leafy greens,” said Counne. “I mean flavors that explode in your mouth.”And it’s becoming big business. The global vertical farming market valued at .2 billion last year is projected to grow to nearly billion by 2026.Daniel Huebschmann, Corporate Executive Chef at Gibson’s Restaurant Group, says the quality of Backyard’s produce is of an extremely high quality. “We’ve talked about freshness, but the flavors are intense,” he says. “It’s just delivering an unbelievably sweet, tender product.”Counne says he has nine patents pending for the hardware and software system he and his team have developed in the 2,000 square foot space. But, he says the ultimate goal is to have the product make its way to grocery shelves nationwide. “The vision is really to build 100 square foot facilities near the major population centers to be able to provide amazing, delicious greens that were grown sustainably,” he said. If he succeeds where others have failed, his high-tech plan could get him a slice of the billion U.S. produce market. Avery Becker loves getting ready for his job, because it’s given him a new lease on life.“A lot of people just judge you and your outside appearance,” Becker said. “They don't really get to you or the person behind it."Becker has a severe auto immune disorder, which gets in the way of landing or even holding a job."I have lots of medical things,” he explained. “I have a disease called Churg Strauss. That is an auto immune disease that basically attacks all my major organs.”"If he has a fever, he has to go straight to the hospital,” explained Becker’s mom, Pam.While his mom worried companies won’t hire her son, one company, Brewability, welcomed him."We have people with autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, blind and deaf,” said Brewability owner Tiffany Fixter.Besides being able to serve up a cold one, inclusion is most important, Fixter says.Last year, only 19.3 percent of people with a disability were employed, according to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics.“A lot of places that I have applied for said I can't work for them because I’d end up in the hospital or end up sick,” Becker said.Fixter takes on that responsibility to allow her staff to shine."We are all a part of the community--not one group should be put away and hidden," Fixter said.Despite her employee’s health being a determining factor on their ability to work certain days, Fixter has learned to make it all work."I try to pair someone who might have more medical needs with someone with less medical needs that way we can make sure we have someone here," she explained.Brewability offers their employees the chance to be a part of society in a way they never thought possible."It gives me a sense of purpose, and the fact that I get to work with disabled people like me, has made me feel less ashamed of it," Becker said.You can check out the Brewability Lab in Englewood, Colorado. 2017
Creating vape juice, the liquid inside e-cigarettes, is a complicated process, that someone like George Cassels-Smith can talk for hours about. Cassels-Smith’s knowledge of e-juice and the electronic tobacco business stems from his family’s long history in traditional tobacco. In the early 1900s, his great grandfather ran a company around flavoring cigarettes. His father took the business over and eventually, it fell into his hands after his father passed. “I lost my father due to cigarettes,” said Cassels-Smith. “He was a lifetime smoker. He had three heart attacks and two strokes and cancer twice, and that’s why I entered into manufacturing e-juice.”The family business is now eLiquidTech, located outside Maryland. “I’d like to try and help people with their nicotine dependence with a safer alternative,” he said.When it comes to the safety of vaping, the Centers for Disease Control says almost 1,500 people around the country with a reported a history of vaping have been hospitalized with acute lung illnesses. More than two dozen people have died from it. “For the last 10 years, there have been relatively no health risk associated with it or very low,” said Cassels-Smith. “Now, all of a sudden, people are dropping like flies. What has been new that’s been introduced?”The CDC is still trying to figure that out. However, that question bothered George Cassels-Smith so much, he decided to test every product eLiquidTech makes. The test revealed, “that we were not introducing a biological problem to the agents that we compound.”Weeks of talking with other vaping manufacturers and industry insiders has left Cassels-Smith believing the cause of the outbreak may stem from black-market products or people introducing additional substances to legally manufactured vaping products. His strongest suggested culprit is THC. “I have a hypothesis that it is cannabis related,” Cassels-Smith said. “Those are oil-based products for delivering big aerosol, as opposed to PG glycerin-based, which is for making nicotine products.”Around 78 percent of the people who have come down with vaping related illness, or who have died, have reported using THC liquids in their e-cigarettes. However, the CDC has not definitively pointed to that being the cause of this outbreak. The CDC’s current statement on the cause of the rash of recent lung illnesses and deaths is, “At this time, FDA and CDC have not identified the cause or causes of the lung injuries in these cases, and the only commonality among all cases is that patients report the use of e-cigarette, or vaping, products.”“I would ask the CDC and the FDA to carefully look at the delineation into scrutinize what these elements are associated with,” said Cassels-Smith. “We need to do more effort to find out what is exactly doing this.” Answers would help eLiquidTech’s business, which typically it produces 80,000 to 100,000 kilos of vape juice. But this month, it is only projected to produce 10,000. Answers would also help George-Cassel Smith’s conscience. “With people dying, I need answers. I need to sleep well at night,” he said. “I am doing everything I can to make sure I am not part of the problem.”But most importantly, answer would help families, losing love ones around the country from vaping related illnesses. 3305
