Starbucks opened the first of its fancy new Reserve stores Tuesday, as it continues battle competition from upscale coffee brands like Blue Bottle and Intelligentsia. The company said the store, which debuted inside its Seattle headquarters, is the first of 1,000 planned Reserve stores.Starbucks described the store concept as "an open, marketplace style" with a Princi bakery counter, a full liquor bar and a Reserve coffee bar, with tables, lounge areas and two fireplaces."Our Reserve store takes the best of coffee craft as well as artisan baking and layers in a marketplace-style customer experience creating a space that has both energy and moments of intimacy," said Liz Muller, senior vice president of Creative, Global Design & Innovation at Starbucks, in a statement. The company said the new products at the Seattle Reserve store include the Nitro Draft Latte, Spiced Ginger Cold Brew and an espresso drink called Bianco Mocha.Starbucks said that its Reserve rollout, which has been in the works since 2016, will also include 20 to 30 new Roasteries, with locations planned for Milan and New York this year, and in Tokyo and Chicago next year. The company said that some of the new Reserve stores will be converted from existing Starbucks stores. The company said it already has dozens of Reserve bars open in existing Starbucks locations. The Reserve bars are different from the Reserve stores. The company said it also plans to open stand-alone Princi stores in Seattle, Chicago and New York.Starbucks has more than 28,000 stores worldwide, according to its latest earnings report in January. But the company's growth of new stores fell below analysts' expectations.Howard Schultz stepped down as Chief Executive Officer last year but stayed with the company to focus on the Reserve brand. Kevin Johnson is the current CEO. 1846

STUART, Fla. - A Martin County woman is turning 90 years old this week and got a huge surprise to help her celebrate the milestone. She has some of the best stories you'll hear, and her impact on the community makes her a treasured part of Martin County's history.Evelyn Deggeller thought she was going to a formal event at a SkyBlue Jet Aviation hangar at Witham Field Thursday, but her friend, Suzanne Deuser, had a big surprise planned.Deggeller, who once owned a plane and has a pilot's license, was treated to an hour-long flight from SkyBlue Jet Aviation to Jupiter and back. When she landed, a brass band was waiting for her, along with friends, family and city and county leaders."This is all for you," Deuser told Deggeller. "I sure did not expect this," Deggeller said.Deggeller has lived a story-book worthy life that has been centered around bringing other people joy.She and her father performed magic as a traveling duo across the country. WPTV Evelyn Deggeller of Stuart used to travel across the U.S. performing magic with her father and owned exotic animals. "I did what they call stage magic. No cards, nothing up close. It was all big pieces that were on stage," Deggeller said. She recalled pulling live rabbits out of hats."The best thing I do now is making money disappear," she laughed. She owned a chimpanzee and an elephant named Dixie, who gave her a lot of laughs. One time, she said Dixie was caught eating the neighbor's flowers. She could grab Dixie by the ear and walk her home. But her local claim to fame came in 1959 when she helped re-start the Martin County fair."The fair had been on before, but the war came, and everything was changed. After the war, they wanted to start up again," Deggeller said. She was just the woman to do it.Deggeller built a career supplying county and state fairs with rides and attractions and food stands. She has also been a part of charitable service organizations in Stuart, including Soroptimist International of Stuart. She holds keys to numerous cities, and Stuart Vice Mayor Eula Clarke presented her Thursday with Stuart's key to the city."I've enjoyed everything that I've been fortunate enough to do," Deggeller said. The celebration was just one more memory to take with her into her next decade."I'm shooting for 100. I don't know if I'll make it anyway, but I'm shooting for 100," Deggeller said. She says she has lived her life by "going with the flow."Of all of her experiences, she said her best years were the ones spent with her husband of more than 50 years. This story was first reported by Meghan McRoberts at WPTV in West Palm Beach, Florida. 2668

The Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center have seen a spike in alcohol poisonings and hospitalizations across much of Arizona. The center services all counties except Maricopa, stating it has never seen so many in one month.“We see dozens of these per year, but never 22 in a month with hand sanitizers being the source of these hospitalizations," said Dr. Steve Dudley, director of the Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center.Since June 1, it has received 22 cases related to people drinking hand sanitizer. The center said many don't know the poisonous chemical methanol is inside.Dudley explained if hand sanitizer isn't mixed just right, it can create the toxic compound.“With COVID-19 and everyone is rushing to be prepared and stay stocked on hand sanitizer that's a left shortage. So, that's opened the door for either whole making of hand sanitizer or other companies or manufacturers being able to step in and fill that need,” explained Dr. Dudley.Dudley explained the effects of methanol might not be apparent right away, but could be deadly over time.“Methanol itself is not very toxic, it's what the body breaks methanol down into that causes all the toxicity,” he said.Signs and symptoms of methanol poisoning include:NauseaVomitingBlurry or hazy vision that could lead to permanent blindnessSeizuresDudley explained the reason some drink hand sanitizer.“Unfortunately, you know, it's an alcohol substitute, just like we see people who drink rubbing alcohol and attempts to get drunk. And so again, the problem is you know people who are used to drinking this product. Not that we would ever recommend it but they're used to drinking a certain product and they know what to expect in terms of what it does for them and what side effects that would have, but now you throw in as extremely toxic methanol in there,” said Dr. Dudley.Dudley added it could be hard to know if methanol is in hand sanitizer by reading the label, but if you think someone has ingested methanol you call the poison center immediately at 1-800-222-1222.KGUN's Ciara Encinas originally reported this story. 2107
