SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Class of 2019 is graduating to a significantly tougher rental market than graduates from ten years ago. Rent hikes and slow income growth are making it more difficult for new grads to afford rental homes, according to a HotPads report. A typical college graduate in the U.S. spends 45.3 percent of his or her income on the median rent of ,740, up from 40.5 percent for the Class of 2009. The rent burden has grown by 22 percent as early-career median incomes have dropped 14.5 percent, HotPads analysts say. In San Diego, the median rent is more than the entire income for new graduates with degrees including biology and business management, at ,000 per year, and nearly the entire income for those with degrees in psychology, at roughly ,000 per year, HotPads reports. The top-earning degrees nationwide were primarily in engineering fields, with mining and mineral engineers earning a median ,854 after college. “As rent prices and student debts rise, affordability concerns for recent college graduates have garnered attention on the national stage,” said Joshua Clark, economist at HotPads. “Graduating from college still typically pays off in the long run, but slower wage growth for college graduates and rising costs have dampened the immediate financial benefits associated with a four-year degree. As renters consider their career interests and their short-term costs of living, where and how they live post-graduation can have more of an impact on their finances now than ever before." Kaitlyn Birchman was supposed to have a preliminary hearing Thursday morning, but she’d already pleaded guilty to forgery of a financial institute. She is set for sentencing on April 3. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Medical Board of California (MBC) has filed an order to revoke the license of Dr. Jeffrey Lovin, a San Diego County radiologist who’s facing charges related to prowling and peeking.ABC 10News first reported on Dr. Lovin last year after his ex-girlfriend shared home security video of a man lurking in her North County backyard while she and her fiancé were inside. She said the man in the video is Dr. Lovin.He’s been charged with multiple counts related to prowling and peeking and violating a protective order. He’s pleaded not guilty and will stand trial next March.Dr. Lovin was already on probation with the MBC for other criminal activity.The Board has now issued an order to revoke his license on Dec. 18 for mental or physical impairment and unprofessional conduct by failing to comply with the terms of his probation.“We never know if we're safe,” his ex-girlfriend told ABC 10News on Tuesday. We’re not using her name or showing her face. She said that she and her fiancé Frank Zeigler still live in fear. “I hear any noise at night and I'm out front seeing what's going on at my home,” he said and added, “We lock all our doors and keep all our blinds closed around the clock.”“We want him to lose his license so he doesn’t do this to anybody else and we feel like this is the first step toward a little justice,” Zeigler later added.On Tuesday, ABC 10News spoke to someone at the law office that has represented Dr. Lovin. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The City of Poway Friday honored the memory of Lori Lynn Gilbert-Kaye, who was killed last April in a shooting at a local synagogue, by renaming a street after her.Many gathered Friday for the unveiling of Lori Lynn Lane (formerly Eva Drive). It's located in the Green Valley Neighborhood, off Stone Canyon Drive. Lori Kaye lived at that intersection. “To be able to dedicate this street to her memory means a lot to us in Poway,” says Poway Mayor Steve Vaus.RELATED: Family discovers synagogue shooting victim's random act of kindnessNeighbors and friends came together and petitioned for the change. Vaus says it's rare for the city to rename a street after someone. The last one dates back to the 1980s. But Vaus says the city had no hesitation with this renaming. The Poway City Council unanimously approved the honor in November. Gilbert-Kaye lost her life in that tragic synagogue shooting back in April. Many say she was a light in this community. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The leader of a maritime smuggling ring operating in San Diego and Baja California has been arrested, according to officials.Guillermo Barba, 29, was arraigned Thursday and charged with conspiracy to bring in illegal aliens for financial gain and conspiracy to transport illegal aliens for financial gain, according to the Office Of The United States Attorney Southern District Of California.Barba is accused of being the leader of a smuggling ring based out of San Diego and Baja California, in which panga boats, pleasure crafts, and multiple load vehicles were used in maritime smuggling. Officials say the ring is believed to be responsible for at least 25 smuggling events since November 2017."In addition to undermining this nation’s border security, smuggling on the ocean is extremely dangerous for the individuals being smuggled," said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. "Barba’s arrest and the dismantling of this alien smuggling group is the product of outstanding federal and international law enforcement cooperation."Barba is scheduled for a detention hearing on Aug. 4.If convicted, he could face a mandatory minimum of three years in custody and up to 10 years in prison. 1208
