(CNS) - Authorities Thursday announced a ,000 reward for information in connection with the January stabbing death of a teenage boy during a fight in Chula Vista.Devin Griffiths, 15, was at a birthday party in the 900 block of Maria Way when a fight between two other teens broke out around 10:30 p.m. on Jan. 31, according to Chula Vista police.At one point during the fight, Griffiths -- who was not initially involved in the argument -- jumped in to help a friend who was being attacked by several young men, police said. They were all described as white or Hispanic and believed to be between 17 and 20 years old.The victim's family has pledged a ,000 reward, in addition to a ,000 reward from Crime Stoppers, for information that leads to an arrest in the case.Lee Griffiths said of his son's death, "My world was taken away. My heart is crushed."Griffiths added, "When I saw my son the hospital, both of his hands and knuckles were broken open, which tells me he fought these guys. And I'm very proud of him and angry with him at the same time."Police have been trying to interview witnesses and other attendees at the party. They hope the reward encourages more people to come forward, and they're also looking for cell phone or surveillance footage of the incident."I'm really hoping that somebody will come and do the right thing," said Griffiths. (KGTV) – The Chula Vista Elementary School District’s administration team held a virtual meeting Friday morning that provided families with details on the district’s potential reopening plan.District officials said their plan is to ease students back in and give families the option to continue to learn virtually, on campus, or through a hybrid program.The first four weeks of the 2020-21 school year, scheduled to begin Aug. 31, will be online. After that period of distance learning, the district will assess the situation; allowing for a possible return to in-class instruction will depend on the level of active coronavirus cases in San Diego County.Superintendent Dr. Francisco Escobedo said a lot of prep work and planning has gone into the district's plan to reopen.During Friday’s meeting, he said, “We want our children to come back because we want in-person instruction. We believe it’s the best type of instruction there is, but we need to come back in a safe manner.”When students do make their return to school, campuses will look very different. The district spent millions of dollars on safety measures, including large sensors that take temperature and dispense sanitizer, large signs, personal protective equipment, and plexiglass dividers."We’ll have signage throughout the school depicting the type of behaviors we expect,” Escobedo added.According to Escobedo, the district has partnered with local company Kahala Bioscience to help conduct routine COVID-19 testing and identify ways to mitigate the spread of the virus.Escobedo said students will return when the county is at a low to medium risk for COVID-19, and when they do, only half of the students will be allowed back on campus with priority for those in K-3 grades.While digital learning is in place for the first few weeks of the school year, campuses will be used for child care through the YMCA, so teachers can utilize that service while in class.In preparation for digital learning, the district is still offering laptops to those who need them. (KGTV) - Southbound Interstate 5 shut down during rush hour Wednesday evening to search a car possibly linked to a robbery for explosives, California Highway Patrol officers said.The car was pulled over about 5:10 p.m. at Main Street in Chula Vista, CHP officials said.San Diego Police said the stop was related to the robbery of the US Bank at 3201 University Ave. in North Park at 4:48 p.m. during which a man referred to explosives.All southbound lanes of traffic stopped at 5:20 p.m. as officers searched the car for explosives. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- Talk about setting the academics bar high.An unexpected message sent to families of Rancho del Rey Middle School in Otay Ranch Wednesday night left about 2000 students trying to explain why they were required to attend Saturday School.("Could you describe the ruckus, sir," was probably said.)The school blitzed automated phone messages, texts, and emails alerting parents or guardians to have their child at school 8 a.m. Saturday morning for a half day of study."A teacher will come out to greet your student and escort them to a classroom, they are released at 12pm. Students should bring school work or reading materials for a 4 hour period of study," the message said.The school, which broadcast the messages to every registered family at around 5 p.m., confirmed about five hours later that the barrage of alerts was an error. "Earlier today a message about Saturday School was sent to all students. Please disregard the message, it was meant for a select group of students that needed to attend," said Rancho del Rey Middle School Assistant Principal Michael Govea.Since the school offices were closed when the messages were sent, nobody was around to answer calls from anxious families. In the span of that radio silence, trepidation across the student body prompted people to search for answers on Facebook."A few of my son friends received a notice for Saturday school from rancho del Rey middle. These kids are good student with no absences. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police in Chula Vista have identified the man suspected of killing a relative Saturday afternoon. According to police, Norberto Sanchez, 55, is suspected of shooting and killing 65-year-old Maria Esther Gonzales on the 1100 block of Oasis Avenue. Police received a call around 12:30 p.m. from Sanchez’s niece. The woman told police that Sanchez called her to tell her he killed his father’s wife and was on his way to her home on the 500 block of Arizona Street. Police responded to the area and arrested Sanchez for murder. At this time, it’s unclear what the motive may have been for the crime.
