SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Southwest announced Tuesday that the company is offering Californians a special deal on travel throughout the state. Southwest says travelers can buy one-way tickets as low as , but you better be on your toes. The sale only lasts until August 22. According to Southwest: "Purchase from August 21 through August 22, 2018, 11:59 p.m. in the respective time zone of the originating city."The tickets are for travel from September 11, 2018 through February 13, 2019. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Unified is fast-tracking several security-related upgrades on several schools.The first upgrade started this week at Miramar Ranch Elementary school, where a new, taller perimeter fence was installed.The district made the decision last week to prioritize roughly -million worth of projects.  They will be paid for by a voter-approved bond measure. The plans were already on the district's to-do list, but they now moved up the schedule.A district spokeswoman says it is in response to the climate plaguing classrooms across America, where school safety and security are front and center.  Campus security has been under heavy scrutiny following the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.“Of course we are worried about school security in the wake of all the shootings,” Diane Hunter, a Miramar Ranch Elementary parent said,  “It’s a naughty problem because we want to balance logistics and ease of access for parents and volunteers, but we also want our kids to be safe.  So I’m glad that the school is taking a look at it and making improvements."The list of projects includes adding and upgrading things like fences, door locks and gate, visitor access control, site radios and security cameras.A timeline for the projects in the individual schools was not readily available.  1380

Across San Diego County, small business owners hoped customers would make an effort to shop local during a time when they’re hurting.“A day like this could potentially be one of the most important days for a small business,” said Joey Flores, saying Chimera, an outdoor market for clothing, records and cacti in North Park, was taking extra precautions for small business Saturday to protect people from coronavirus.In Barrio Logan, sisters Marla and Abigail Mercado went to Casa Xovi, a local gift shop filled with items celebrating the Latino community.“Supporting our local business because we want, especially in Barrio Logan, we really want the history and the culture to stay here. So even if you’re only spending ten bucks here and there, that’s money that adds up,” they said.Casa Xavi owner Xochitl Villarreal said she’s seen more customers the weekend following Thanksgiving and hopes this continues. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego’s unemployment rate fell to 2.9 percent in April, the lowest rate yet in this century.1,577,000 people were part of the San Diego labor force last month, according to the California Employment Development Department.Only 46,200 people did not have jobs.California’s unemployment rate was at 4.2 percent in April, the lowest level since 1976.San Francisco and Marin Counties had the lowest unemployment rate of 2.1 percent.The highest unemployment rates were in Colusa County, at 15 percent, and Imperial County, at 14.4 percent. 565
