SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego is one step closer to approving the 6.5M purchase of two hotels to permanently house homeless people living in the convention center.When the pandemic hit in March, the Bridge Shelters and Golden Hall were cleared out and about a thousand people were brought into the convention center, according to the mayor's office.The emergency setup allowed for proper social distancing, and resources to request PPE and other supplies.The convention center will be emptied in December to prepare to open for events when it is safe.Since the pandemic, downtown has looked different according to Marshall Anderson, Vice President of Government Affairs with the Downtown San Diego Partnership."I would encourage all of you to walk around downtown so you can see just about how safe and livable it is at the moment ... For too long has downtown acted as the region's homeless shelter. It's nice to see another neighborhood bearing some of the responsibility for sheltering some of our most vulnerable," he said.The city plans to buy two Residence Inn hotels, one in Kearney Mesa, the other in Mission Valley. Together the hotels could house about 400 people and support tenants who are accessing services for mental health and substance abuse issues.During the city's Public Safety and Livable Communities Committee Meeting Wednesday, Mission Valley neighbors voiced their complaints."It's a bad idea, I am absolutely opposed to this project," a man who has lived in Mission Valley for 30 years said."My real concern is obviously the safety of my community but also the safety of the potential residents ... I am just opposed to this idea because it doesn't seem practical for the city and I feel like it opens the city up to a lot of liability in terms of motorist versus pedestrian accidents," a woman living in the same neighborhood added. She is concerned there is not enough transit or pedestrian infrastructure in the area.The people who would move into the hotels, according to the mayor's office, are stable and already accessing services for mental health and substance abuse. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of a man who died after sky-diving in Otay Ranch created a Gofundme page for his two sons left behind.Jonas Wingen said his brother, Joe, died Sunday after suffering a medical emergency while sky diving."Deployed his chute, everything was fine... While he was descending something happened, he had a heart attack I'm not sure," said Wingen.Joe's two sons, Jo Jo and Riley, now moving to Lake Elsinore to live with their mom, while grieving the loss of their father."Jo Jo, it's hitting him hard, he's 14... Riley's handling it well," Wingen said. He said the family created a Gofundme to help ease some of the hardship and support the boys' future."Jo Jo is going to get braces... We're going to put some of it in a college fund for when they hit 18," he said.Riley created a memorial video showing how much they idolized their dad, remembering jam sessions and adventures. Wingen said Joe liked to ride dirtbikes, go surfing and play instruments."You know he worked hard and he played hard. That was Joe, and he loved his two boys," he said. "The last thing he said to me was, 'I'm going sky diving tomorrow wish me luck, woo!'"Wingen said Joe's last text he sent captured his essence: "fears lead to an average life."Wingen said their family is planning a celebration of life for August 5, which would have been Joe's birthday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The doctor responsible for one third of vaccine exemptions in the San Diego Unified School District fired back Thursday at critics who say her science isn’t sound. Dr. Tara Zandvliet has a refrigerator full of vaccines at her office in South Park. She administers them to her young patients, but she also writes medical exemptions for some children. “It’s the kids that are sensitive that you need to just take a little bit different tack with,” said Zandvliet. Zandvliet wrote exemptions for 162 of the 487 children who provided SDUSD with a medical reason to avoid the vaccines required for entry. Despite the number, Zandvliet says she does not consider herself anti-vaccine. “I’m not gonna write a medical exemption just cause someone wants it. I’m not gonna write it or not write it just because the school says ‘hey we have too many of them’,” she said. Since California became one of three states to ban personal belief exemptions for vaccines, the number of medical exemptions has risen. So has the number of children being vaccinated. San Diego Unified officials issued a statement about the situation, saying in part the district "has noticed some physicians issuing exemptions that appear to be excessively frequent and based on criteria that are not aligned with guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.” Zandvliet’s website says she will grant an exemption based on factors like family history of allergies or autoimmune disease, neither of which are recognized by the Centers for Disease Control as valid reasons for exemption. “I refuse 7 out of ten; the three that come in they've convinced me they have proof they've given me medical records from family members and it’s there,” Zandvliet said. Other doctors disagree with Zandvliet’s reasoning, including State Senator Richard Pan, who is also a physician. He was behind the law to get rid of the personal belief exemption and is now trying to make it harder for parents to get a medical exemption. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The government is sweetening the deal for investors who put their money into San Diego's most under-served neighborhoods, but the offer could be having a negative effect on the people who live in them.A new study from Zillow says prices in so-called opportunity zones grew 20 percent in a year after they received the government designation. That designation, part of 2017 tax reform, offered investors capital gains tax breaks for investing in the areas, which the IRS deems "economically distressed."San Diego County has about 30 of these zones, most of them concentrated in the city of San Diego's inner core. Zillow says the Colina del Sol neighborhood near City Heights, parts of Golden Hill and University Heights are the areas that could see the most investment.
