Donations made at the event will benefit the San Diego Blood Bank, the Alpha Project and the San Diego Food Bank. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Elected officials, including Escondido Mayor Sam Abed and San Marcos Mayor Jim Desmond, and a group of residents will urge the San Diego County Board of Supervisors Monday to join the federal government's lawsuit challenging California's sanctuary state law.The bill, signed by Gov. Jerry Brown in October, limits cooperation between California law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. It prohibits local agencies from holding some immigrants on the basis of federal detainers, asking about immigration status or sharing information with federal authorities not available to the public, among other provisions.Opponents believe the law obstructs the deportation of criminals by federal authorities."The sanctuary state law is not only unconstitutional, but it is a real threat to public safety because it forces local government to harbor and shield violent criminals," former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio said. "It is imperative that San Diego voters contact the five members of the Board of Supervisors before the vote tomorrow (Tuesday) to urge them to sign on to the lawsuit against the sanctuary city law."The news conference will be held 11 a.m. at the park behind iHeartMedia, 9660 Granite Ridge Drive.Proponents of the bill, including the ACLU of San Diego and Imperial Counties, believe it makes communities safer and allows local enforcement to focus on their jobs. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspect was arrested Monday morning after climbing onto the roof of a La Jolla home, where he remained for just over an hour before surrendering to SDPD officers.Dispatchers received a call around 4:45 a.m. from a woman who reported hearing a person on the roof of her home in the 1500 block of Coast Walk, off Torrey Pines Road just east of Prospect Place, San Diego police Officer Tony Martinez said.Officers responded to the home and the woman pointed them to where she had seen the suspect, Martinez said.Police entered the home to make sure the suspect hadn't made it inside, then they spotted him on the roof and ordered him to surrender, the officer said.The suspect surrendered and was taken into custody around 6:10 a.m., Martinez said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who was previously acquitted of a 12-year-old Escondido girl's murder was released from county jail this week, months after he was charged with being a felon at a county jail.Richard Raymond Tuite, 51, was released Thursday after a judge set his bail at SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man accused of ambushing a janitorial worker at a Little Italy coffee shop and trying to sexually assault her pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a half-dozen felony charges, including kidnapping with the intent to commit a sex offense.Christopher Merron, 28, was ordered held on million bail. He faces life in prison if convicted, said Deputy District Attorney Nicole Roth.Merron allegedly attacked the woman as she was cleaning the coffee shop in the 1700 block of India Street about 4:30 a.m. last Sunday, pushing her into a back room, taking her car keys and threatening her with a knife.Following a struggle, the victim, whose name was withheld, was able to break free and run out of the building, said San Diego police Lt. During Tuite's retrial, the now-adult former suspects testified that they had no involvement in Stephanie's death.Tuite had been in the area of the Crowe residence the night the girl was killed. He was agitated and looking for a woman named Tracy, according to prosecutors, who contended that the disheveled and seemingly confused transient wandered into the Crowe home and attacked the girl.Investigators, however, found no physical evidence directly linking him to the crime scene.Analysts later found the victim's blood on two shirts that Tuite had been wearing on the day of the murder. Jurors who voted to acquit Tuite said they believed a defense theory of "contamination," in which blood from the crime scene somehow wound up transferred onto Tuite's clothing.More than two decades after the murder, two families reacted Friday after Tuite was released in the current case."I'm absolutely pleased.
