The maker of the video game Fortnite is being sued by two parents in Canada who claim the game is as addictive as cocaine. The parents are claiming software development company Epic Games used psychologists to design "the most addictive game possible."Fortnite is one of the most popular games among kids. Eight-year-old Rayline Brassert and her friends are hooked“People always brag about Fortnite,” said Rayline. “Like when they always come to school and brag about it.”Rayline’s mother says it can be a challenge to get her daughter to stop playing. “There’s like this switch that goes off and if she’s not allowed to do something and she’s a completely different person and you gotta pull her back to reality,” said Natalie Brassert.Fifteen-year-old Gavin Probst says he plays Fortnite nearly every day and admits he can spend a little too much time in front of the screen. “It’s real easy to lose time. I’ve personally gone overboard many times,” said Gavin. His mother, Christine, also notices a change in her son when he starts playing the game. “You can just sort of tell their attitudes get a little bit more short, they can be a little bit more cranky,” said Christine. Dr. Russell Schilling with the American Psychological Association has worked with game developers but wasn’t involved with Fortnite. “They’re creative people and whether psychologists are involved or not, what they’re trying to do is make the game as engaging as possible,” said Dr. Schilling. “They want you to play it, they wouldn’t make money if they weren’t.”Schilling feels there’s not enough research to show video games are addictive, even though the World Health Organization made video game addiction an official mental health disorder.“Many things can become addictive,” said Schilling. “There are many factors for why that may happen but there may not be anything specifically about video games that’s unique – we just don’t know at this point.”As for the lawsuit, Epic Games won’t comment on pending litigation but Fortnite has nearly 250 million users worldwide. 2067
The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino is removing liquor dispensers from guest room minibars at its resort in Punta Cana, the Dominican Republic, the general manager of the resort told CNN.Hard Rock Hotel and Casino decided last week to remove the liquor dispensers and hopes to "provide more tranquility for guests," GM Erica Lopez said. The decision to remove the dispensers was made independently and not as a result of the two deaths that happened at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino at Punta Cana, Lopez added. The decision follows a series of American tourist deaths in the Dominican Republic, some of which may have involved liquor. At least nine American citizens have died during or after stays at Dominican Republic resorts over the past year, according to information from the State Department, family members and the resorts involved. But officials in the Dominican Republic and the United States have not said the deaths are connected. A US State Department official said Friday there has not been a unusual spike in reported deaths from the Dominican Republic, and the State Department has not issued a travel warning about trips to the country specific to these deaths. The Dominican Republic's top tourism official also downplayed what he called "exaggerated" reports about the deaths."It's not true that there has been an avalanche of American tourists dying in our country, and it's not true that we have mysterious deaths," Tourism Minister Francisco Javier Garcia told reporters. Two deaths at Hard Rock HotelTwo of the deaths occurred at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Punta Cana.David Harrison, 45, of Brandywine, Maryland, died at the hotel in July 2018, according to his widow, Dawn McCoy. They were celebrating an anniversary, and she said her husband returned from a snorkeling excursion one day earlier and he said he wasn't feeling well.Early the next morning, she said, he was sweating and unable to get up before he died. Local authorities listed the cause of death as a heart attack and pulmonary edema.Robert Wallace, a 67-year-old resident of Turlock, California, died after becoming ill at the hotel April 12, relatives told 2160

The Gilroy Garlic Festival shooter, Santino William Legan, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee said Friday during a press conference.Legan's death was ruled a suicide, Smithee said, citing Nicole Lopez of the Santa Clara County Coroner's Office. When the shooting first began, Legan exchanged fire with three Gilroy police officers, Smithee said."I do know that the suspect was hit multiple times by the rounds the officers fired, which put him down," he said. "It appears now, with that ruling on the cause and manner of death, that once he was down, he was able to get a round off and he shot himself. It sounds like that round was to the head."The shooting Sunday left three dead and 16 injured. 760
