SAN FRANCISCO, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Facebook and Time Warner announced on Tuesday that they are teaming up to launch a wide- ranging, major cross-platform partnership initiative to fight bullying. The multi-media campaign, named "Stop Bullying: Speak Up" after the original anti-bullying initiative by Time Warner's Cartoon Network, will integrate broadcast, print, online and social media to educate parents, teachers and youth about the actions that will help protect young people from the impact of bullying, the two said in a joint statement. As part of the initiative, Facebook is scheduled to launch an interactive application in the back-to-school season this fall, which will enable educators, parents, and kids to make a personal commitment to help stop bullying."We care deeply about the safety of our nation's children and are proud to be partnering with Time Warner to raise awareness of bullying," Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook's chief operating officer, said in the statement."We believe that by working together with parents and teachers, we can teach young people to speak up and stop bullying," she added.Time Warner is also planning to expand its multiplatform efforts to communicate the anti-bullying message to an broader audience. It said in October, three of its magazines -- People, Sports Illustrated and Time -- and their affiliated websites will feature editorial content that highlights the problem of bullying and innovative programs and measures being taken to combat it.In partnership with Facebook, CNN's Anderson Cooper will also host a new town hall, which is scheduled to air in October and will be dedicated to discussing bullying issues confronting kids today as well as discussions with experts to teach adults on coping with the bullying epidemic."I'm confident that through our multiplatform approach and combined resources we can inspire even more people to take action against bullying," said Jeff Bewkes, Time Warner's chairman and chief executive officer.

WASHINGTON, July 5 (Xinhua) -- The countdown for the final space shuttle launch began Tuesday afternoon, but unfavorable weather may delay shuttle Atlantis' launch attempt on Friday, NASA announced."We are going with a 60 percent chance of KSC (Kennedy Space Center) weather prohibiting launch due to the potential for showers and isolated thunderstorms in the area," shuttle weather officer Kathy Winters told reporters Tuesday at a precountdown status briefing. "I wish I had a better weather briefing for you."Atlantis is scheduled to lift off at 11:26 am (1526 GMT) on Friday from Kennedy Space Center with four U.S. astronauts on board for a 12-day mission to the International Space Station. Overall, the chance of an on-time liftoff is 40 percent, Winters said."We will do everything we can to launch on Friday but if things don't work out so that we can do that we have plenty of options... Saturday and Sunday," said NASA Test Director Jeremy Graeber. Conditions improve for Atlantis launch opportunities on Saturday and Sunday.NASA said it must launch Atlantis by Sunday, otherwise it will have to wait until at least July 16. That's because of an unmanned rocket due to lift off next week, using the same launch support personnel and equipment.NASA's 30-year-old shuttle program is ending due to high operating costs. The Obama administration wants to spur private companies to get into the space taxi business, freeing NASA to focus on deep space exploration and new technology development. When the U.S. space shuttle program officially ends later this year, the Russian space program's Soyuz capsule will be the only method for transporting astronauts to and from the station.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- The unique fossils of an adult plesiosaur and its unborn baby may provide the first evidence that these ancient animals gave live birth like mammals, according to a new study to be published Friday in the journal Science. The 78-million-year-old, 15.4-foot-long (4.7-meter-long) adult specimen is a Polycotylus latippinus, one of the giant, carnivorous, four-flippered reptiles that lived during the Mesozoic Era.Dr. Robin O'Keefe of Marshall University in West Virginia and Dr. Luis Chiappe, Dinosaur Institute director of the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles County, have determined that it is the fossil of an embryonic marine reptile contained within the fossil of its mother. The embryonic skeleton contained within shows much of the developing body, including ribs, 20 vertebrae, shoulders, hips, and paddle bones.O'Keefe and Chiappe have also determined that plesiosaurs were unique among aquatic reptiles in giving birth to a single, large offspring, and that they may have lived in social groups and engaged in parental care.Although live birth has been documented in several other groups of Mesozoic aquatic reptiles, no previous evidence of it has been found in the important order of plesiosaurs."Scientists have long known that the bodies of plesiosaurs were not well suited to climbing onto land and laying eggs in a nest," O'Keefe said."So the lack of evidence of live birth in plesiosaurs has been puzzling. This fossil documents live birth in plesiosaurs for the first time, and so finally resolves this mystery."

SAN FRANCISCO, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Apple updated its online store on Tuesday to begin offering unlocked models of iPhone 4 in the United States for the first time."The unlocked iPhone 4 requires an active micro-SIM card that you obtain from a supported GSM wireless carrier," said Apple in the product description. The iPhone requires a smaller version of the standard SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card.Started at 649 U.S. dollars for the 16 GB version, the unlocked model is a GSM phone, which means, in the United States, the phone runs on networks of T-Mobile or AT&T, although it can only send data over T-Mobile's old EDGE network, not its 3G network and the faster HSPA+ network.Verizon and Sprint, the other two major U.S. wireless carriers, both use CDMA networks that do not use SIM cards. The iPhone 4 has been sold unlocked in other countries. For frequent international travelers, an unlocked iPhone means they just need to pop in a micro-SIM card for whichever country they are going, avoiding provider's high international fees.According to Apple, iPhone sales grew 113 percent year over year in the second quarter of its fiscal 2011, reaching a record high of 18.65 million units.

SAN FRANCISCO, June 8 (Xinhua) -- Facebook Inc. will be probed by European Union (EU) regulators over its latest facial recognition feature rolling out worldwide, U.S. media reported on Wednesday. The feature, called Tag Suggestions, uses face recognition software to match users' new photos to other photos they are tagged in. It groups similar photos together and suggests the name of the friend in the photos.Facebook rolled out the feature in the United States late last year, where users can opt out of the feature by going to their private settings. But Facebook switched it on by default without telling users first when it became available on Tuesday in countries outside of the United States.A group of privacy watchdogs from 27 EU nations will study the measure for possible rule violations, a Luxembourg official of Article 29 Data Protection Working Party told Bloomberg. The Working Party, an independent EU advisory body on data protection and privacy, comprises the data protection regulators of all the 27 EU member states."Tags of people on pictures should only happen based on people' s prior consent and it can't be activated by default," said the Luxembourg official, Gerald Lommel. He noted that such automatic features "can bear a lot of risks for users" and the European data- protection regulators will "clarify to Facebook that this can't happen like this."Authorities in Britain and Ireland said they are also looking into the new function on Facebook. The British Information Commissioner's Office told Bloomberg that "the privacy issues that this new software might raise are obvious," saying it is "speaking to Facebook" about the issue.Facebook has been under scrutiny by EU regulators for several privacy concerns, such as users' default settings and how the company uses the information collected from its social network website.
