For graduate student Daria Porter, sleep is often in short supply.“To function, I drink coffee and then during the day, I'll drink tea,” said Porter. The research indicated that when tired, the brain goes into hyperdrive – causing an enhanced response to high fat, calorie dense foods.“So, they ate food like donuts or chocolate chips that are richer in calories,” said Kahnt. In addition, scientists scanned people’s neurological responses to food and non-food odors when they were sleep deprived versus being well-rested.“The part of the brain that responds or processes food or odors in general,” said Kahnt. “That has a stronger response to food and non-food odors when you're sleep deprived.”The research provides new insights into the biological connection between sleep habits and weight gain. And how understanding that connection can help thwart making bad choices.Researchers say the best bet is to put that snack down and instead hit the sack. CHICAGO — An infant cut from his mother's womb in a gruesome crime opened his eyes briefly on Sunday for his father. Marlen Ochoa-Lopez, 19, was nine months pregnant when she was killed and her unborn baby — a little boy — was cut from her womb. The infant is reportedly in grave condition and on life support in the neo-natal intensive care unit, according to CNN. Friends and family of the baby's mother released an image of the baby and his father together in a hospital room this week.There will be three days of visitation for Ochoa-Lopez on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. DETROIT — A Detroit Police Department officer is at the center of an internal investigation after he showed up under the influence of alcohol to training in Lansing, Michigan, Detroit Police Chief James Craig told reporters Friday. Michigan State Police say it was discovered after the officer volunteered to be part of a demonstration on breathalyzer training.The incident comes a week after another officer, who was still in her probationary period, was arrested for allegedly selling drugs. The officer at the training facility in Lansing blew a .08, said Craig. The officer was not arrested because he was not armed at the time and did not drive to the training session, according to Michigan State Police. The matter was turned over to Detroit police.
