SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department has a new million tool to fight wildfires.The department unveiled its S-70i Firehawk helicopter Thursday, a modified version of the military’s Black Hawk helicopter.The aircraft is bigger, faster and capable of dropping more water than the city’s other two helicopters combined. The Firehawk has a 1,000-gallon tank compared to the 375-gallon tanks in Copters 1 and 2.San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Chief Colin Stowell said the Firehawk, dubbed Copter 3, represents the “latest and greatest in fire suppression and rescue capabilities.”RELATED: Chula Vista brush fire highlights rare night water drop technique“San Diego has over 45,000 properties adjacent to canyon rims and open spaces, posing a significant fire risk in our city. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Though some of Balboa Park and its museums have partially reopened, the San Diego Natural History Museum will remain closed until 2021."The Nat" is keeping its doors closed for the rest of the year, despite whether public health orders allow the museum to reopen with coronavirus-related restrictions. Officials said the decision to keep the museum closed "was not an easy or obvious decision."During the five-month closure, museum staff said they will focus on exhibition space projects and programs, including:A new "California Blooming" exhibit upon reopeningConstructing an ADA-compliant ramp on the museum's east entranceDeveloping a new museum cafe and retail storeConverting a row of staff offices on the fourth floor into a gallery for future exhibitsCompleting a master plan for gardens outside the buildingThe museum is also reimagining its Canyoneers program to virtual hikes and recommendations and developing more digital options for the community, and students and teachers."The museum we closed in March will not be the same museum we reopen," said Judy Gradwohl, president and CEO of The Nat."Our future will combine the best of our work before and during the pandemic in a hybrid model that connects people with the wonder of nature on-site, online, and out in nature."In the meantime, staff say they plan to stay engaged with the community.“I look forward to seeing how our creative and energetic staff will make the most of the next five months,” said Gradwohl. “To borrow an analogy from the monarch butterflies I’ve been rearing this summer, I look at this extended closure and our eventual reopening as emerging from a chrysalis, not a hibernation.”The museum has been able to keep about 100 of its full-time and part-time staff and doesn't expect any changes to those positions. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The tight race between two democrats to become San Diego's next mayor is seeing an increase in attacks, less than four weeks before the election.Democrats Todd Gloria and Barbara Bry have both said they were not involved with messages that have gone out over the last few days. On Wednesday, Barbara Bry called a news conference Wednesday in response to two mailers she said were deceptive — one sent to Democrats made her out to be the Republican choice for mayor, while the other, sent to Republicans, made her out to be very liberal. "I think these mailers are very deceptive, they do not explain who I am as a person, they were done in a deceitful way to purposely deceive voters about who I am," she said. Both mailers appeared to be in support of Bry, with quotes or images from well-known public local officials. But a closer look shows that a committee that supports Todd Gloria paid for the ads. Attorney Gil Cabrera, the principal for Neighbors for Housing Solutions Supporting Todd Gloria, which sent the mailers, says their purpose is to show that Bry is trying to be different things to different voters."The one thing she hasn't said is that any of the quotes are inaccurate or any of the policy positions are inaccurate, which is, I think, interesting," he said. A spokesman for Gloria says the candidate is not legally allowed to coordinate with those mailers and has not done so. Meanwhile, Gloria is taking attacks from conservative radio host Carl DeMaio over his recent support of a bill that doesn't automatically force someone to register a sex offender in certain circumstances after sex with a minor - meant to end discrimination against LGBTQ individuals.Demaio said he did it on his own and said he has not endorsed Bry. Bry said her campaign had nothing to do with the texts and disagreed with Gloria's vote on the bill, Senate Bill 145.Political Analyst John Dadian said denouncing an ad would be a victory for an opponent. "You're never going to agree with your opponent, so that's why she's saying I'm not going to denounce it, you go talk to Carl DeMaio," he said. "And then on the other side of the coin, Todd Gloria is doing the exact same thing."The race is in a dead heat, according to the ABC 10News/Union-Tribune scientific poll released this week.
