A federal judge has sentenced a Louisiana man to 25 years in prison for setting fires at three churches in the state in 2019.Earlier this year, Holden Matthews admitted that, between March 26 and April 4, 2019, he intentionally set fire to three churches in with predominantly Black congregations near Opelousas, Louisiana — Greater Union, Mt. Pleasant and St. Mary Baptist Churches — in an effort to raise his profile as a "Black Metal" musician by copying similar crimes committed in Norway in the 1990s.On Tuesday, Matthews was sentenced to 15 years in prison for intentional damage to religious property. He was then sentenced to 10 years in prison for a charge of using fire to commit a felony. Matthews did get 18 months credit for time already has served.The judge also asked the Bureau of Prisons to ensure he is placed in a facility near his family and that he receives substance abuse counseling and mental health treatment.Matthews was also ordered to pay restitution of 0,246 to St. Mary, 0,213.30 to Greater Union, and .1 million to Mt. Pleasant."These churches trace their origins to the post-Civil War Reconstruction period and, for generations, were a place for predominantly African American Christians to gather, pray, worship, and celebrate their faith," Assistant Attorney General Eric Dreiband said in a statement. "The churches survived for nearly 150 years but did not survive this defendant's warped act of hatred. I extend my sympathy to the victims of this defendant's arson spree, the congregants of St. Mary Baptist Church, Greater Union Baptist Church, and Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. The Justice Department will continue vigorously to protect their right to worship and live in peace. The Justice Department stands against these acts of hate and the sentence handed down today reflects that. A Lake Geneva, Wisconsin family is trying to raise money to bring their teenager home from a trip overseas where he became ill.Nathan Dyer traveled to Morocco with his cousin Ashley Benyamina and her husband Mohammed who is from the North African country. He fell ill on April 15 and is now in a coma receiving care in Paris. The beginning of the trip was great, Ashley and Mohammed said, and Nathan was enjoying everything the country had to offer.“He was in the desert running in the dunes, he was climbing mountains we were playing soccer in the streets,” Mohammed said.Then when the three returned to Marrakesh, Nathan started exhibiting symptoms of what they thought was travelers sickness. Doctors gave him antibiotics and told him he’d be better in three or four days. That didn’t happen, so they made another doctor’s appointment.“The appointment was like at 3 p.m. and at 2 p.m. He said, 'I’m really not feeling well, I think I have to go' and then he collapsed on the floor," Ashley said. Nathan has been in a coma ever since. Nathan had traveler’s insurance which got him transported by air ambulance to Paris for better care. That’s where he remains now.His mother has flown there to be with him. His insurance maxed out at ,000 for the trip from Morocco to Paris. A hippopotamus attacked and killed a tourist in Kenya over the weekend, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) said in a tweet Sunday.The attack took place Saturday evening at Lake Naivasha, about 58 miles from the Kenyan capital of Nairobi. Chang Ming Chuang, 65, was with a colleague taking pictures of the hippo on the shores of the lake when the animal attacked.Chuang was taken to the Naivasha District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Chuang's colleague, Wu Peng Te, 62, survived the attack with minor bruises and is recovering at the Naivasha Sopa Resort, the wildlife service said. KWS is tracking the hippo.The KWS identified the victim as a Chinese tourist. Taiwan's foreign ministry has since confirmed that the two tourists involved in the attack were from the self-governed island. 803
