Whether planning necessary travel in the near term or fantasizing about vacationing in the ever-longer term, you might be curious how the coronavirus pandemic has affected airfare prices.We compared data from our points and miles valuations analysis to determine where and how airfare has changed since this time last year. We looked at the same routes, airlines and booking time frames for both 2019 and 2020, ensuring an apples-to-apples comparison.Although air travel has picked up significantly since the lows in April, the Transportation Security Administration is still reporting about 63% fewer daily screenings than this time last year. Has this drop in air travel demand led to a significant price drop?The short answer is: Yes, prices have fallen.Prices have dropped, but mostly in the short termThe average cost of a domestic round-trip ticket fell 23% in 2020, from 7 in 2019 to 4.This price drop is striking but not surprising given continued low demand. But the trend becomes stronger when breaking out the booking date data, with those made within 15 days dropping much further than bookings made six months in advance.The plot thickens.Airfare for long-term bookings has remained flat year over year. If you book a flight for six months from now, you’re likely to pay roughly the same price as you would have last year. But closer-in bookings, within 15 days, are not only far cheaper than they were in 2019 but also cheaper than long-term bookings.This turns conventional airfare-booking wisdom on its head. Usually, we would recommend booking flights as far ahead as possible to secure low fares. But booking too far in advance is now a recipe for getting fleeced.? This usually means ramping up prices for nearly full flights at the last minute, when competition becomes stiffer.However, now that demand has dropped and airlines are actually falling over themselves to reduce flight capacity, the game has changed. Airlines are now competing with each other for last-minute bookings, which drives down prices. And they seem to be making up revenue by raising prices on longer-term bookings made by those few brave souls willing to plan in advance. In other words, it’s a buyer’s market for close-in bookings.Of course, these pricing dynamics, like everything this year, are liable to change by the week. If you’re thinking about booking a particular route, set up a price alert on Google Flights or another travel search tool and keep an eye on how the airfare winds are blowing.What do these unusual airfare trends mean for you? While President Donald Trump has pushed hardline immigration policies and vilified undocumented immigrants, his private club in New Jersey has employed people who managers allegedly knew were in the country illegally, The New York Times reported Thursday.The Times found two women who say they entered the United States unlawfully but were employed at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey.Victorina Morales, a native of Guatemala, told the newspaper she had crossed into the US illegally in 1999 and was hired at the club in 2013 as a housekeeper using phony documentation.Another woman, Sandra Diaz, who's from Costa Rica and is now a legal resident of the US, said she was also undocumented when she worked at Bedminster between 2010 and 2013, the Times reported."We have tens of thousands of employees across our properties and have very strict hiring practices," Amanda Miller, a spokeswoman for the Trump Organization, said in a statement provided to CNN. "If any employee submitted false documentation in an attempt to circumvent the law, they will be terminated immediately."The Times noted there is no evidence that Trump or Trump Organization executives knew of the two women's immigration status.However, the women told the newspaper that at least two supervisors at the club were aware and took steps to help them avoid detection and hold on to their jobs.Diaz claimed to The Times that "there are many people without papers" and said she had witnessed several others hired though they were also undocumented.The attorney for the two women accused their supervisor at Bedminster of not only knowing about their undocumented status but also abusing them and threatening to have them deported."While working at Donald Trump's estate in Bedminster and interacting with the President and his immediate family, my clients and others were repeatedly subjected to abuse, called racial epithets and threatened with deportation," said Anibal Romero in a statement Thursday."Ironically, the threats often came from the same supervisor who had employed them despite knowing their undocumented status and even provided them with forged documents," she added. "This toxic environment was designed to intimidate these women, leaving them fearful for their safety and the safety of their families."Morales told The Times that she understood she could be fired or deported by going public with her story. According to the Times, Morales has applied for protection under asylum laws and is exploring a lawsuit claiming workplace abuse and discrimination. She also claimed to the newspaper that a housekeeping supervisor at Bedminster made insulting comments about her intelligence and undocumented status.The Trump Organization "did not comment specifically" on Morales or Diaz when asked by the Times.Trump's campaign was buoyed by his harsh stance on illegal immigration and promises of a border wall paid for by Mexico. (AP) — More than 70 West Point cadets have been accused of cheating on a math exam taken online when they were studying remotely because of the coronavirus pandemic.A spokesman at the U.S. Military Academy says 55 cadets admitted cheating on the calculus exam in May. Most of them have been enrolled in a rehabilitation program and will be on probation for the rest of their time at West Point.The cheating came to light when instructors saw irregularities while grading the exam. One of the students was a sophomore, and the 72 others were freshmen in a class of 1,200 West Point cadets.According to the Associated Press, once an honors committee completed their investigation into the matter, two cases were dropped due to lack of evidence, four cases were dropped after cadets resigned, and three cadets admitted to cheating but aren't eligible for the rehab program.Several over cadets will face hearings with the administration to see if they will be penalized or expelled, the AP reported.According to the AP, the only other cheating scandal to occur at West Point happened in 1976 when 153 cadets were expelled or resigned for cheating on an electrical engineering exam.More than 90 of those caught cheating in 1976 were reinstated and allowed to graduate, the AP reported. 1305
With many teachers opting out of returning to the classroom because of the coronavirus, schools around the U.S. are scrambling to find replacements and in some places lowering certification requirements to help get substitutes in the door.Several states have seen surges in educators filing for retirement or taking leaves of absence. The departures are straining staff in places that were dealing with shortages of teachers and substitutes even before the pandemic created an education crisis.Among those leaving is Kay Orzechowicz, an English teacher at northwest Indiana’s Griffith High School, who at 57 had hoped to teach for a few more years. But she felt her school’s leadership was not fully committed to ensuring proper social distancing and worried that not enough safety equipment would be provided for students and teachers.Add the technology requirements and the pressure to record classes on video, and Orzechowicz said it “just wasn’t what I signed up for when I became a teacher.”“Overall, there was just this utter disrespect for teachers and their lives,” she said. “We’re expected to be going back with so little.” When school leaders said teachers would be “going back in-person, full throttle, that’s when I said, ‘I’m not doing it. No.’”Teachers in at least three states have died after bouts with the coronavirus since the start of the new school year. It’s unclear how many teachers in the U.S. have become ill with COVID-19, but Mississippi alone reported 604 cases among teachers and staff.In cases where teachers are exposed to the virus, they could face pressure to return to the classroom. They looked at their grandkids and the life they have, and I think they’re saying, ‘I’m just not going to do it.’”In Salt Lake County, Utah, the state’s most populated metropolitan area, more than 80 teachers have either resigned or retired early because of concerns about COVID-19 in schools. More than half of those happened in one of the county’s five school districts, Granite School District. Heavy class loads and internship responsibilities, though, limit their availability to one day a week.Many who work as substitutes are retired teachers such as 67-year-old Margaret Henderson, of Phoenix, who said she will not return as she had planned.“I don’t want to get called into a classroom where a teacher has called out because of the virus or to quarantine. ... And we know that’s going to happen more and more,” Henderson said. “There are still uncertainties about the safety of reopening the school buildings. Can you blame (substitutes) for not wanting to go in?”In rural Iowa’s Hinton Community Schools, Hinton High School Principal Phil Goetstouwers said the school is already down to a third of the substitute teachers it had last year. WHEATON, Ill. -- As the death toll from the coronavirus nears 200,000, recovery can be difficult for those who have survived the illness. But the first ever double-lung transplants for COVID-19 survivors is providing new hope for medical centers around the country and world.Brian Kuhns is at the beginning of a long and grueling road to recovery.Each day, he endures several difficult physical therapy sessions to rebuild his weakened body.“This is real tough,” said Kuhns. “All this stuff runs through my mind that I have to do and now I can't be like this.”Kuhns, who initially didn’t take the coronavirus seriously, contracted the deadly virus in early March. The illness was like nothing he’d ever felt before.“It was just like, I'm kind of walking dead. Fever, shaking so hard I can't believe it.”The virus that has now taken the lives of more than 190,000 Americans was destroying his lungs.About 100 days on life-support and isolated from his family for more than three months, the 62-year-old grandfather was near death more than once.“Yeah, I thought I was going to die for sure. I thought it was over,” said Kuhns.After 39 years at his side, Kuhns' wife Nancy couldn’t be in the hospital with him. On the phone, she pushed him to keep fighting.“I keep give him a lot of confidence even when they told me he wasn't gonna make it. I kept telling them that he was,” she said.His doctors at Northwestern Memorial Hospital determined his only chance for survival was a double-lung transplant.After 10 hours in surgery, Kuhns became only the second known coronavirus patient ever to have both lungs replaced.“I fought back, gasping for air, 24 hours a day. As hard as you could breathe,” said Kuhns.Dr. Mahesh Ramachandran, the chief medical officer at Northwestern Medicine’s Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital, says they’ve already discharged 125 COVID-19 patients since the pandemic began. Rehab, says Dr. Ramachandran, is essential to recovery.“They get quite deconditioned. They get quite weak. They have neurologic problems, cardiac problems that need to be managed before they can safely go home,” said Dr. Ramachandran.Two months after the revolutionary transplant, Kuhns is still getting used to his new lungs.“I could feel it all the way down,” he said with a deep breath.But he continues to fight and implores others to wear a mask and avoid others or face the consequences.“This is a crazy disease. Some people get away with it and other people it nails,” said Kuhns. “I was one of the ones it nailed. So, you want to make a choice. You know which one you want to be.”After nearly six months in the hospital, if all goes well, he could go home by the end of the month. 2692
