SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Faith and community leaders and former gang members from across San Diego are calling on gangs to agree to “A Season of Peace.”They're asking for no gunfire from Thanksgiving (Nov. 26) through January 1, 2021.With the coronavirus disrupting traditional violence intervention efforts, there has been a rise in gang and gun violence. According to SANDAG's 2019 report on homicides in the San Diego region, a firearm was used in 55% of homicides. Also, firearms were used 100% of the time in gang-involved homicides. Compared to mid-year 2019, there were a greater number of homicides -- 37% increase -- reported to law enforcement in the San Diego region from January to June of 2020. Since SANDAG reported on homicides for that time period, gun violence and homicides continue to rise.During the Season of Peace campaign, community leaders will lead community walks of peace, organize street-side memorial services, ceasefire agreements with gang leaders, and host a tree planting in honor of those who've died because of community violence.Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Community Assistant Support Team (CAST) will follow the advice of health officials, collaborate with law enforcement and politicians to ensure everyone's safety.For the past eight years, CAST has brought quality community service to families impacted by gun violence with de-escalation support, conflict resolution, retaliation prevention, and in hospital spiritual care. CAST refers victims to social services to limit barriers that increase distress and unhealthy choices. 1575
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Governor Gavin Newsom’s vaccine safety task force will have to work quickly once the FDA announces a decision on Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine candidate.The 11-member panel, officially called the Scientific Safety Review Workgroup, has been tasked with reviewing the safety and efficacy of vaccine trials and rendering a recommendation on their use in California.The workgroup has a difficult mission: review the data thoroughly enough to offer a recommendation independent from the FDA, but do it fast enough to avoid delaying distribution of the vaccine.Pfizer’s emergency use authorization application spans thousands of pages.The workgroup has already reviewed Pfizer’s early-stage clinical trial data from phases 1 and 2 and found no cause for concern, Governor Gavin Newsom said. They’re still waiting to get their hands on the all-important Phase 3 data, which included thousands of participants.Panel member Dr. Rodney Hood, the president of the Multicultural Health Foundation, acknowledged the task force will have to complete its review of the Phase 3 data “very, very quickly.” Dr. Hood is one of two members from the San Diego region, along with Dr. Mark Sawyer of Rady Children’s Hospital.“We certainly don't want to introduce any unnecessary delay in the vaccine being available to Californians,” Dr. Sawyer said.The FDA has scheduled a meeting of its vaccine advisory committee, known by its acronym VRBPAC (pronounced verb-pack), on Dec. 10. The agency said it will make Pfizer’s Phase 3 data available at least two days before that meeting.At the end of that meeting, a group of about 20 experts on the advisory committee will vote on whether to recommend emergency authorization of the vaccine. The FDA is expected to issue a decision shortly after, although the agency does not have to abide by the advisory committee’s recommendation.“The California committee is on notice to be ready for a meeting either later in the day on the 10th or on December 11,” said Dr. Sawyer.Dr. Sawyer was recently added to VRBPAC, so he will cast a vote on whether to recommend approval of the vaccine at the national level before participating in California’s process.“It is going to take a few days for the vaccine to really start flowing,” he said. “I don't think the [California] committee is going to introduce extra delay.”The California committee has promised to issue its decision within 24 hours of the FDA’s to avoid slowing down distribution, but that means the members may have as few as three days to review the safety and efficacy data.Federal regulators will spend about three weeks reviewing the thousands of pages of data submitted as part of Pfizer’s application. VRBPAC and the California Scientific Safety Review Workgroup will render decisions based on summaries prepared by the FDA, Dr. Sawyer said.Both doctors say they have confidence in the FDA’s process and acknowledge it would be very unlikely for the California workgroup to break with the agency’s recommendation. They said the mission of their review is to add an extra layer of verification after complaints the Trump administration was exercising political pressure on the FDA.“I think the governor foresaw that it was going to be very important that the general community accept these vaccines, assuming they're approved and are safe and effective, because otherwise we're not going to get out of this pandemic,” Dr. Sawyer said.The doctors say they want to make sure that community acceptance extends across all demographics, so they’ll be looking closely at the numbers to see if various ethnic or racial groups had different responses to the vaccine.Based on research on past vaccines, a differential response is not expected, Dr. Hood said. However, COVID-19 does strike Latinos and African-Americans more severely, making vaccine acceptance among minority communities all the more critical.“I want to look at the data, get an assessment of risk-benefit and the question I ask is, would I take it? Number one. Number two, if I would take it, would I recommend it to my family?” he said.The doctors said they will also closely examine reports of side effects.Early data suggests both Pfizer and Moderna’s candidates have somewhat harder-hitting side effects than the typical flu vaccine. Dr. Sawyer compared the side effects to the recent shingles vaccine.“Your arm hurts for a day or two. You may not feel well. You may feel a little bit under the weather for the first 24 hours. You could even have a mild fever or headache,” he said, noting those symptoms typically resolve within 24 to 48 hours based on the data available so far.“That's actually a good sign. You want that to happen,” he added.Those sorts of short-term side effects are signs the body is building a strong immune response. They’re evidence the vaccines work as well as advertised, but the doctors say they won’t know for certain until they review the final numbers. 4949

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Extended construction work next to Friars Road has drivers wondering when the Mission Valley street will be back to normal.What is normally a four-lane road is now two, as SANDAG completes an million project. Crews are taking out a bridge with one track on it and replacing it with three bridges and four tracks. Two tracks will serve the Coaster and heavy freight trains. The other tracks are for the blue line trolley to La Jolla. “Every day that I have to pass this, it's just an eyesore,” said Katherine Whitley, who has spent two years driving through construction. “It clogs traffic. Everybody knows Friars Road has grown and grown and this isn't the right place for this to be.”RELATED: Gas main break prompts SR-163 closure in Mission ValleyBicyclists are also concerned about construction danger.“The cars going that way are passing me going 55 miles an hour about three feet away from me. So it feels pretty sketchy,” said Greg Zackowski.SANDAG said it is doing everything it can to minimize the impact of construction. The equipment can’t be put in the San Diego River because of the environmental impact. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Family, friends and fellow Airmen gathered to pay a final salute to a San Diego Air Force pilot killed in a training accident last month. Second Lieutenant Travis Wilkie was buried with full military honors today at Miramar National Cemetery. It was a somber scene as a horse-drawn carriage arrived with the casket carrying the 23-year-old graduate of the Air Force Academy in Colorado. Wilkie's parents, sister, and new wife, Peyton looked on as members of the Base Honor Guard escorted the flag-draped coffin. Two T-38 Talon jets were landing in formation when something went wrong. Wilkie excelled in everything he did. He was a standout baseball player and honors student at La Jolla Country Day School. He continued playing ball and setting records at the Air Force Academy. He graduated from the academy in 2018 and was just weeks away from getting his wings, according to a statement by the family. Wilkie and his girlfriend had just married in October. Peyton is also in the Air Force. Military officials say it could be a couple of months before they know what caused the crash. 1308
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Empty school busses belonging to the San Diego Unified School District are being driven around even though most students continue virtual learning.While this happens, San Diego Unified sits in Phase One of its reopening plan — meaning many students are still at home. Erin Coller's 5-year-old is in the school district. Right now he's learning from home but Coller says she seen busses in the neighborhood."Every time I see one of those busses I just think who is riding them - where could they possibly be going," says Coller. "It stopped at our house around the time that it used to come to our house and I was loading the kids in the car and I was like are you and angel can you just take them and drive them around please, what are you doing and he was just driving the route."At the end of October, Team 10 followed school busses on several days to see where they're going and what they're doing. After leaving the bus yard in Kearny Mesa, one bus headed north to the Scripps Ranch area. The bus made several stops like it was following a planned route, but no students ever got on or off. About 90 minutes and 31 miles later, the bus was back at the yard.Another bus left the yard later that same afternoon and headed to a school in the Poway area. It picked up one student and then headed south to drop them off.The next week, another bus bus went from the yard to Interstate 805 south. It continued on to State Route 54 east to then over to SR-125 north. The bus then completed the circle on SR-52 west. About 40 miles and 53 minutes later, the bus was back in the yard. It never stopped.Standing outside the school lot, bus movement is constant. SDUSD says for good reason."Just starting them up and running them in the parking lot for 10 minutes is not sufficient. They need to put on several miles to make sure that that transmission is maintained that fluids are at the right levels that seals and gaskets are all working also to make sure that our batteries are all charged," says Marceline Marques, SDUSD's operations support officer.Marques oversees the district's transportation."During a regular school year, you would see busses operating empty. I think it just stands out right now because most of our students are participating in online learning," Marques said.Part of that time on the road is driver proficiency. Right now, along with honing their skills, drivers are doing everything from delivering textbooks, to educational supplies, and computers to students' homes.They are evaluating stops for safety and space with social distancing requirements and evaluating school drop-off areas for physical distancing needs and adjustments among other things. The list of driver responsibilities goes on."If it's diesel it needs to be run or it can have problems but as far as delivering supplies I'm shocked to hear that they are doing that because we have multiple students at our school who can not come pick up supplies," one parent told Team 10.The district says it pays .83 per gallon for renewable diesel. Busses average about seven miles per gallon. So that first 30-mile trip we watched cost a little less than in gas. The bus that didn't stop, about .50 for that trip."I think that the practice of running our buses far outweighs the cost of the fuel or the concern that folks have when they see it running without a passenger," Marques said.Right now, about 150 busses are transporting students. Others are being used to help in other ways and some like we saw are rotating through that maintenance schedule. The district says overall, it needs to be ready for the next phases in reopening. 3654
