SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An ex-con dubbed the "Bad Grandpa" bandit because of the disguise he wore while robbing four banks in San Diego is scheduled to be sentenced today at the downtown courthouse.James Saputo, 51, pleaded guilty in June to robbery, attempted robbery and other charges. He faces more than 130 years to life in prison.Saputo was arrested twice in 2016 on drug charges and was out of custody on bail when he committed the bank robberies in San Diego between Feb. 12 and March 30 last year, said Deputy District Attorney Lucy Yturralde. The defendant is also accused of robbing seven banks in Riverside and Orange counties, the prosecutor said.Authorities nicknamed Saputo the "Bad Grandpa" bandit because of the elderly disguise he wore, which included a wig, glasses and a cane.Saputo's criminal record dates back to 1986. He has 14 prior convictions, including bank robberies in Del Mar and San Marcos. 921

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman died Monday after being injured Sunday when she was hit by a car in Rancho Penasquitos, police said. The San Diego County Medical Examiner says Nang Arm, 37, died after she was taken off life support Monday. Medics responded to a call at 7:07 a.m. Sunday on Black Mountain Road and Carmel Mountain Road, where they found an unconscious woman with face injuries, San Diego police Sgt. Robert Hawkins said.A gold-colored 2006 Nissan Sentra driven by 20-year-old Uvelyn Nunez- Jaramillo and carrying two passengers, was heading south on the 13700 block of Black Mountain Road when the car veered to the right, SDPD Sgt. Tim Underwood said. The car went onto a sidewalk, damaged a fence, then struck the Nang. She was taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital, Hawlins said. The car continued a short distance down the street, where it also hit a water line before it came to a stop. Nunez-Jaramillo exited the Nissan and walked away.Several passersby stopped at the scene to render aid to the woman and emergency personnel, Underwood said.Detectives determined that Nunez-Jaramillo caused the crash. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who wounded an off-duty sheriff's deputy and a bystander by opening fire in the Gaslamp District two years ago was convicted of assault with a firearm Thursday in his third trial in the case. Ray Pitoau, 39, was convicted of two counts of assault with a firearm for the Aug. 7, 2017 shooting that injured Deputy Jason Philpot, who was walking through downtown with his two brothers following a Metallica concert at Petco Park. Also injured was bystander Vladimir Shvets, a passerby in San Diego for a convention. Pitoau was also convicted of a lesser charge of assault on Philpot's younger sibling, Joshua, who Pitoau initially got into an argument with on Island Avenue near Sixth Avenue just after 1 a.m. RELATED: Gaslamp deputy shooting suspect escapes Spring Valley SWAT standoffSentencing is scheduled for Dec. 11. Pitoau was convicted in a prior trial of three felony firearm possession counts and was sentenced to 27-years-to-life for those convictions. However, both of his previous trials in the case resulted in hung juries regarding the assault charges. Jason Philpot testified that he tried to wrap his arms around Pitoau and get the gun away, but the defendant was able to pull the trigger, wounding the deputy in the chest and right arm. A second round also passed through his right arm. One of the rounds ricocheted off the sidewalk and struck Shvets. RELATED: Man convicted in Gaslamp shooting involving off-duty deputy sentencedProsecutors said Philpot and his group walked past Pitoau when the defendant and Joshua Philpot traded insults. Pitoau testified that he grabbed a gun in self-defense because a group of men, including Philpot, were advancing on him. He testified that he and Jason Philpot both grabbed onto the gun, leading it to fire as they grappled over the weapon. Pitoau was arrested about a month later in Mexico.RELATED: San Diego deputy testifies against man charged with shooting him in Gaslamp District 1972

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - California Attorney General Xavier Becerra filed a lawsuit today against the Trump administration over its plan to begin construction on a border wall in San Diego and Imperial counties.Speaking to reporters at Border Field State Park, Becerra said he filed a complaint in federal court in San Diego that alleges legal and constitutional violations. He said the lawsuit was filed on behalf of the state and California Coastal Commission."The border between the U.S. and Mexico spans some 2,000 miles -- the list of laws violated by the president's administration in order to build this campaign wall is almost as long," Becerra said. "The Department of Homeland Security would waive 37 federal statutes, as well as regulations that 757

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A young man who fatally stabbed an Ocean Beach transient was convicted Friday of second-degree murder.Noah Mitchell Jackson, 21, was found guilty in the June 22, 2017, killing of 65-year-old Walter "Ras" Riley. Jackson is slated to be sentenced on Aug. 23.The victim -- an Ohio native nicknamed "the Incense Man" due to his practice of selling aromatic burning sticks at local farmers' markets -- was stabbed just before 12:30 a.m. that day. Witnesses called 911 reporting that a man was attacking another man in the 1900 block of Bacon Street.RELATED: Man dies after attack on busy Ocean Beach streetResponding officers found Riley lying on the sidewalk with stab wounds to his upper body. He was pronounced dead at UCSD Medical Center.Deputy District Attorney Michael Reilly said the victim was stabbed five times, with the killing blow entering his back, breaking several ribs and puncturing his heart.Jackson confessed to a friend that he stabbed Riley, according to the prosecutor, who alleged Jackson told the friend, "I got that guy. I stabbed that (expletive).""Those are the words of a murderer," Reilly told the jury.Reilly said that some time after the killing, Jackson had a friend drive him to Kellogg's Beach, where Jackson threw the murder weapon and his cellphone into the water. Police divers were not able to recover the knife or the phone.RELATED: Suspect in fatal Ocean Beach stabbing arrestedJackson's attorney, Eugene Iredale, alleged the friend was pressured by police to incriminate Jackson and was being offered immunity for his testimony in the trial.According to Reilly, Jackson told police that he was home and asleep by 9:30 p.m. the night of the stabbing, but later confessed to another friend that he lied to police and went back out to confront the victim, though he denied fighting or stabbing him.Reilly alleged that Jackson also told the friend that he "handled" the victim because Riley had previously spat on Jackson's sister and insulted her. However, Iredale denied this alleged motive, as he said his client had substance abuse problems that led him to make several "completely random statements" to friends following the date of the killing. The attorney said the spitting incident involving Jackson's sister never occurred and "God only knows" why he said it.Iredale alleged that police originally had 20 to 30 suspects, but centered on Jackson due to a 911 call made about 90 minutes prior to Riley's stabbing. In that call, a recording of which was played for the jury, the mother of one of Jackson's friends said Jackson was at her home displaying erratic behavior and was saying he wanted to commit suicide. He'd just gotten into an argument with his girlfriend, then left the house, she told a dispatcher.Iredale alleged the clothing description she provided police -- a white sweatshirt and jeans -- vaguely resembled the attire of a suspect captured on surveillance footage running through Ocean Beach following the killing. That footage was publicly released shortly after Riley's death.Iredale said the man in the footage was Riley's killer, but looked nothing like his client.Jackson was arrested in Huntington Beach in February 2018 by SDPD detectives with the help of local police and the U.S. Marshals Service. 3290
