NEW YORK (AP) — Getting an Amazon package delivered from the sky is closer to becoming a reality. The Federal Aviation Administration said Monday it has granted Amazon approval to deliver packages by drones. Amazon says the approval is an important step, but added that it is still testing and flying the drones. It did not say when it expected drones to make deliveries to shoppers. Last year, Amazon unveiled self-piloting drones that are fully electric, can carry 5 pounds of goods and are designed to deliver items in 30 minutes by dropping them in a backyard. The FAA said Amazon is the third drone delivery service to win flight approval. Delivery company UPS and a company owned by search giant Google won approval last year. 739

New coronavirus cases in the U.S. have surged to their highest level in two months and are now back to where they were at the peak of the outbreak. The U.S. on Tuesday reported 34,700 new cases of the virus, according to a tally compiled by Johns Hopkins University that was published Wednesday. There have been only two previous days that the U.S. has reported more cases: April 9 and April 24, when a record 36,400 cases were logged.New cases in the U.S. have been surging for more than a week after trending down for more than six weeks. While early hot spots like New York and New Jersey have seen cases steadily decrease, the virus has been hitting the south and west. Several states on Tuesday set single-day records, including Arizona, California, Mississippi, Nevada and Texas.Cases were also surging in other parts of the world. India reported a record daily increase of nearly 16,000 new cases. Mexico, where testing rates have been low, also set a record with more than 6,200 new cases. But China appears to have tamed a new outbreak of the virus in Beijing, once again demonstrating its ability to quickly mobilize vast resources by testing nearly 2.5 million people in 11 days.In the U.S. state of Arizona, which on Tuesday reported a record 3,600 new infections, hundreds of young conservatives packed a megachurch to hear President Donald Trump’s call for them to back his reelection bid.As he did at a rally in Oklahoma over the weekend, Trump referred to the virus with a pejorative term directed at its emergence in China.Ahead of the event, the Democratic mayor of Phoenix, Kate Gallego, made clear that she did not believe the speech could be safely held in her city — and urged the president to wear a face mask. He did not. Trump has refused to wear a mask in public, instead turning it into a red-vs.-blue cultural issue.Earlier Tuesday, Dr. Anthony Fauci told Congress that the next few weeks are critical to tamping down the surge.“Plan A, don’t go in a crowd. Plan B, if you do, make sure you wear a mask,” said Fauci, the infectious disease chief at the National Institutes of Health. In China, an outbreak that has infected more than 200 people in the capital this month appeared to be firmly waning. China on Wednesday reported 12 cases, down from 22 the day before. Beijing reported seven new cases, down from 13.Officials in Beijing said they tested more than 2.4 million people between June 12 and June 22. That’s more than 10% of the capital’s population of about 20 million.Authorities began testing people at food markets and in the areas around them. They expanded that to include restaurant staff and the city’s 100,000 delivery workers. China also said it used big data to find people who had been near markets for testing, without specifying how.The vast majority have tested negative, though one courier delivering groceries from supermarkets tested positive.A single inflatable mobile lab in one district was capable of conducting 30,000 tests a day, the official Xinhua News Agency said.South Korea, which successfully tamed its first wave of infections, is seeing another rise. While the first outbreak was centered in its fourth-largest city, the current outbreak is in the Seoul region, where most South Koreans live. Authorities reported 51 cases Wednesday. Its increase of 40 to 50 cases every day over the past two weeks comes amid increased public activity and eased attitudes on social distancing. In India, with a population of more than 1.3 billion, the densely populated cities of Mumbai and New Delhi have been hardest hit. The country has reported more than 450,000 cases of the virus, including more than 14,000 deaths. The situation in New Delhi is a rising concern, with the federal government criticizing its poor contact tracing and a lack of hospital beds.Mexico reported nearly 800 new deaths on Wednesday. The country has recorded more than 190,000 cases and more than 23,000 deaths, although officials acknowledge both are undercounts due to extremely low testing rates. Mexico has performed only about half a million tests, or about one for every 250 inhabitants.Worldwide, more than 9.2 million people have contracted the virus, including more than 477,000 who have died, according to figures compiled by Johns Hopkins University.___Perry reported from Wellington, New Zealand. NOGALES, Mexico — Eighteen-year-old Joshua escaped violence in Guatemala with his father two months ago and has ended up just steps away from the U.S.-Mexico border.Saying that gangs control almost all of Guatemala, he says they will likely request asylum in the United States. The Kino Border Initiative, headquartered in Nogales, Arizona, helps provide for those fleeing danger who end up like Joshua: far from home and uncertain about the future."A lot of people are fleeing violence in the northern part of Central America and parts of southern Mexico," said Fr. Sean Carroll. "That reality is not changing."Immigration figures show that before 2013, only one in 100 asylum seekers was able to convince authorities they faced a credible fear of violence in their home country, a crucial step toward qualifying for asylum. Now, one out of every ten applicants is able to meet that standard. The asylum process has been under intense political scrutiny as thousands of people have organized into large groups and moved to seek a better life in the United States. The caravans have drawn increasing criticism from President Trump and others in the White House, who have looked for ways to thwart the migrants' ability to enter the U.S. or request asylum. For Joshua, he says he has one request for immigration officials: do him the favor of saving his life. 1386

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Rush Limbaugh provided an update on his "roller coaster" battle with lung cancer Monday, saying a recent scan showed “some progression” and that it’s “in the wrong direction.”The conservative talk radio host has been seeking treatment since he announced in February that he was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer. In a statement posted on his website, Limbaugh said his scans had previously shown that his treatments had “rendered the cancer dormant,” meaning they had stopped the growth of the cancer.“It had been reduced, and it had become manageable,” he said.Limbaugh said he has stage 4 lung cancer and that his team has adjusted his chemotherapy drugs with hopes of keeping additional progression at bay as long as possible.“The idea now is to keep it where it is or maybe have it reduce again. We’ve shown that that is possible. If it happened once, it can happen again,” he said. “So that’s the objective of the current treatment plan.”Limbaugh did address that his cancer is likely terminal.“It’s tough to realize that the days where I do not think I’m under a death sentence are over. Now, we all are, is the point,” he said. “We all know that we’re going to die at some point, but when you have a terminal disease diagnosis that has a time frame to it, then that puts a different psychological and even physical awareness to it.”The host has not mentioned his cancer battle that much since his diagnosis, saying that he doesn’t want to treat it as “an opportunity to bleed on the audience, to either complain or constantly update.” He says that’s because he’s not the only one going through hardships. 1637

New gun legislation proposes that anyone who wants to buy a firearm would need to submit their social media profiles and search history for review before buying a gun in New York.Officials would be able to review up to three years worth of search history. The bill was drafted by state Senator Kevin Parker and Brooklyn borough President Eric Adams."There should be more restrictions on how guns are purchased. We should have more background checks," Paul McQuillen, director of the Buffalo chapter of  New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, said.He said that the NYAGC isn't ready to back the bill yet, but he does think it could be beneficial."We’ve obviously seen some of the mass shooters have a social media history that should have sent red flags," he said. It's not going to be easy to pass this kind of bill. James Tresmond, a gun rights lawyer, said it violates multiple constitutional rights."The first, the second amendment, the fifth amendment, the fourth amendment, and the 14th amendment," Tresmond said. The bill still has a way to go before it is passed or denied. Currently, it is in committee and there's no vote scheduled.  1157
