In the wake of the death of an eight-year-old boy while in custody of Customs and Border Protection, the agency announced a series of policy changes on Tuesday night.First, Border Patrol is conducting secondary medical checks on all children in CBP care and custody with a particular focus on children under 10.Second, Border Patrol is working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement on available surge options for transportation to Family Residential Centers and supervised release, CBP said. The agency also is reviewing other custody options to relieve capacity issues in the El Paso sector, such as working with nongovernmental organizations or local partners for temporary housing.Third, CBP is considering options for medical assistance with other governmental partners, the agency said. That could include support from the Coast Guard, as well as possibly more aid from the Department of Defense, FEMA, Health and Human Services, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Finally, CBP is reviewing its policies with a particular focus on the care and custody of children under 10, both at intake and beyond 24 hours in custody, the agency said.On Tuesday, Rep. One Indianapolis mother had to endure not only everyday life with a newborn but controversy with pumping breast milk at her place of employment.Katrina Culhane returned from maternity leave in July of after having her son, Hunter. She worked for the Indiana BMV's central office in downtown Indianapolis. To continue breastfeeding, she needed to pump at work."I thought being the state they would have a plan for me," Culhane said.Culhane says her options on location to pump were extremely limited. One choice was to go up several floors to another department where another mother was often using a room. Her second choice was to reserve a conference room."They kept promising it to employee relations that they were going to have a room and they never had a room," Culhane said. "It wasn't OK that I had to constantly pump in the bathroom."Culhane says she felt frustration from her bosses when needing to adjust her scheduled breaks to make her reservation in the conference room."I worked hard for them. They treated me like dirt. They made me feel like crap. I just want to go pump," Culhane said. "It was stressful. Every single day...it was so stressful."State law requires the following from state and political agencies:Paid breaks to pump.Reasonable effort to provide a room or other location other than a toilet stall.Reasonable efforts to provide a refrigerator to keep breast milk cold."It is absolutely important for a workplace to support these moms, especially when you are first going back to work," Lauren Duncan, a certified lactation specialist, and Donor Mother Coordinator at The Milk Bank, said.RTV6 reached out to the BMV to get a response to this situation. This would be the first fruiting plant the United States has grown and harvested at the International Space Station.As NASA looks to send astronauts to Mars, it's crucial that the agency find plants and fruits that can travel with them.According to Jacob Torres, a NASA scientist, depending on the alignment of the planets, the shortest trip to Mars would still take two years. Traditional prepackaged meals will not provide enough vitamins and nutrients for astronauts on the journey."They would be able to fill their stomachs up, but they wouldn't have the nutrients to do their work," Torres said.Before NASA embarks toward the Red Planet, scientists must find ways to supplement the astronauts' diet with freshly grown fruits and vegetables, such as the Espa?ola pepper.Why chile peppers?There are many challenges to growing crops in space. A plant must be easily pollinated and able to survive in a high-carbon-dioxide environment.Scientists found that certain chile peppers can do both these things.When Torres arrived at NASA in 2018 for an internship, scientists were exploring the possibility of growing Hatch peppers, a New Mexico chile.Torres, a native of that state, suggested that the team look at the state's Espa?ola pepper instead.Hatch peppers grow in the deserts of New Mexico, but Espa?ola peppers grow at much higher altitudes and have a shorter growth period, making them better for harvesting in space.The Espa?ola peppers have exceeded expectations, he said.
