Brandon Dean told the Los Angeles Times that the deputies tried to stop the man for riding a bike in violation of vehicle codes. The man dropped his bike and ran, and the deputies chased him.Dean said the man punched a deputy in the face and dropped a bundle of clothes he was carrying. A gun fell out of the bundle, and the deputies fatally shot him.The Los Angeles chapter of Black Lives Matter later called for protesters to take to the streets in South Los Angeles. LOS ANGELES (AP) — California environmental officials say a popular agricultural pesticide they say has been linked to brain damage in children will be banned after next year under an agreement reached with its manufacturer.Under the deal announced Wednesday, all California sales of chlorpyrifos will end on Feb. 6, 2020.Farmers will have until the end of 2020 to exhaust their supplies.The pesticide is used on numerous crops in the nation's largest agriculture-producing state, including alfalfa, almonds, citrus, cotton, grapes and walnuts.State regulators say the pesticide has been linked to health defects in children, including brain impairment.Officials say they are budgeting million to help manufacturers develop a safer alternative.The pesticide's manufacturer, Corteva Agriscience, says it reached the agreement "in the best interests of the affected growers." 884
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Court documents show that a Los Angeles police officer accused of fondling a dead woman has been sued by her family.The lawsuit was filed Tuesday by the family of 34-year-old Elizabeth Baggett. The lawsuit accuses Officer David Rojas of fondling Elizabeth Baggett's breasts and "feeling her nipples, without limitation," as well as showing the body camera video of it to others.The alleged incident happened in October 2019. Officers were called to a home in response to a report of a body discovery.Rojas, who has been on the force for four years, remains employed by the Los Angeles Police Department.Rojas has been suspended, and he has pleaded not guilty in a criminal case.Rojas' lawyer could not immediately be reached by The Associated Press for comment. 789
LOS ANGELES (AP) — California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom calls mail-in voting safe and secure, but it's not perfect. More than 100,000 mail-in ballots were rejected by election officials in the state's March presidential primary. The six-figure tally highlights the big gap in the state's effort to ensure every vote is counted, as Democrats and Republicans argue over the integrity of vote-by-mail elections. State data obtained by The Associated Press shows 102,428 mail-in ballots were disqualified in 58 counties, mostly because they arrived too late.
